I agree that you’re over analyzing.

One thing that came to mind about the interrupting is that can be regional. Where I grew up, interrupting was a normal part of conversation. We all interrupt each other constantly when talking and no one thinks twice of it, it's just how we communicate.

Moving to a different part of the country where that was considered rude was an adjustment. Something that was never a second thought before was suddenly something I had to be more aware of so as not to offend people. It’s possible your interviewer just came from a place where it’s totally accepted and part of how people talk. Or as the other poster suggested, was just trying to get to the best juice of the interview. The Mayo interviews are pretty short compared to others so probably trying to squeeze as much out of the time as possible.

As for #1 - I think that’s extremely common. They ask us to project into the future but things change. People get new jobs and have to discontinue other things and that’s just life. I wouldn’t worry.

Hi guys,

I will be sending Mayo an update letter regarding my work experiences. I want to include a specific patient encounter but not sure if it violates HIPAA privacy laws. Here is my description:

"A man came from the inner city via public transportation and presented with 5 chief complaints ranging from toe fungus and head lice to flu-like symptoms and chest pain. He did not have a primary care provider and mentioned that all doctor’s offices were closed for the day and no other health clinics nearby were taking more patients. Although we were well past our closing time, we decided to help him out. A routine physical exam revealed an undiagnosed heart murmur and the HPI showed symptoms of non-reproducible chest pain and SOB. Patient health information further indicated a history of chronic hypertension, tobacco smoking, and cardiac issues in his family. We recommended him a cardiologist and immediately referred him to the ED."

Please let me know if this is an appropriate description. Thanks!

I may be missing something, but this doesnt seems appropriate for an update letter.

Here's the full update letter. Please let me know what you think.

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing to share an inspirational patient encounter I had a few weeks ago working as a Patient Care Technician for The Little Clinic. A man came from the inner city via public transportation and presented with 5 chief complaints ranging from toe fungus and head lice to flu-like symptoms and chest pain. We recommended him a cardiologist and immediately referred him to the ED.

A few days ago, he came to inform us that the ED found a massive heart attack! It was the 1st one of his life and he thanked us for potentially saving his life! Working as a PCT, I’ve accumulated a large collection of inspirational patient stories like these that reaffirmed my belief in patient-centered care and shaped my vision into the physician I want to be in the future. There is a sense of personal satisfaction in going out of my way to help others but more important is enabling them to take advantage of opportunities they would otherwise be unable to. With this in mind, I seek to obtain my medical education from an institution that places the highest value on patient-centered care. I sincerely hope the admissions committee values my life experiences and takes them into account when evaluating my application. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This is my opinion and I am not an adcom, but I don't this single experience is update worthy, particularly because this update doesnt show what you did for the patient, like was it mostly the physican/nurse you were working with who decided how to handle the patient's care? As it is worded right now, I can't figure out your role and what actions you took.

Second of all, you say your work as a PCT has many inspirational experiences like this. Why did you choose this story to send as an update.

Also, just say happy holidays, don't assume everyone celebrates Christmas.

Uhhh posting this online is probably more of a HIPAA violation than if you were to email it privately. But your call.

I received a likely letter by email this morning from one of my interviewers... It said I was highly ranked
giphy.gif

Ok, that's the terminology that my interviewer used as well. So maybe that was my likely letter. It didn't say anything about the official decision just that the committee was highly impressed and I was ranked very highly and that this is no guarantee since the operations and executive committees make the final decision. I took it as my interviewer being kind. So if that is the Likely email then I got one too.

Did you guys send Letter of Intent?

Does anyone know when the decisions will be coming out? I seem to remember January, but I also feel like I've heard February... Thanks.

They didn't give us a definitive date on interview day, but last year decisions came out early February. This cycle it'll likely be at around the same time.

At my interview, we were told decisions would come out mid- to late-January. February was on the table if they decided to extend interviews, which IIRC the MN campus did not. So hopefully they'll be on track for sometime in January!
Ok, that's what I remembered from interview day as well! So let's hope for mid-January then 😉

Does anyone know if anyone last year who received a "you have been highly ranked" email was NOT accepted? I got one last week, and am seriously considering sending a letter of intent, but am not sure if I'm ready to commit yet. As I understand, it is important to get them in before the end of the year since it sounds like they have started putting together the class?

Idk how your interviewer worded your email, it mine said that even though I was very highly ranked it isn' guaranteed because the executive committee decides the acceptances based on other factors as well.

Yeah, mine was similar. I wish I knew what this meant. I really hope they're telling the truth about accepting people who don't send a LOI...

They're serious, I know a few people who were accepted in past years without sending a LOI.

If you don't mind me asking, when was your interview and who did the likely letter come from? Was the likely email sent separately from the ranking email, or were they two in one?

I just think if you aren' serious to send a Letter of Intent I'd say send a Letter of Interest.

The likely letter was from one of my interviewers, I'd rather not say the day because the groups are so small. It was separate from the ranked email (and received on a different day), and mentioned specific things about me and my interview.
My "highly ranked" email from AZ was more generic and not from anyone I recognized. I'm curious to see how things turn out.

Yeah, the fact that they are so specific and personalized is VERY professional to me.

Just got a lovely "highly ranked" email from one of my interviewers. 🙂
Nice! I'm curious, when did u interview? i wonder if they have a certain minimum time interval between the generic ranked email and the highly ranked email

I was sent my highly ranked email 1 week after I interviewed. It was the day after I got the ranking email....I kind of think it's just up to your interviewer and when they find it appropriate to let you know.

I interviewed back at the beginning of October. It seems this is generally when highly ranked emails have started going out in previous years, though.

I didn't think it was possible to check my email even more angstily, but this "likely letter" stuff has proven me wrong!!!

*refreshrefreshrefreshrefreshrefresh*

Did you email the letter to wendy or did you upload it to the portal?
I did it by email, and they emailed back to confirm it was added to my file- I liked the reassurance that it actually went through

Received the highly ranked email, and I sent in a LoI around a month after my interview in October.
Just in case anybody was keeping count lol

I'm curious why it's called the "likely" letter? I know the highly ranked letter uses the words "highly ranked" and also says that it doesn't mean you will be accepted but it's a good sign. Does the likely letter use the word "likely" in it? Is it similar to a likely letter in undergrad college admissions which pretty much outright says you will hear favorable news?

Also received "highly ranked" email from my interviewer today.
I interviewed late September and haven't sent a letter of interest yet.

Anyone get the likely email that interviewed for 2+2?

Hey guys, visitor from the AZ thread here.

I got the “highly ranked” email and sent my letter of intent a day later. For those of you who also got the email AND are sending LOIs, are you planning on sending them anything else prior to the decision release day? They mentioned they like updates, but I don’t want to be annoying, especially considering that I already sent an LOI and that’s really the strongest thing i have to offer...

I won't be sending them any updates. I've already graduated so not much to update. So hopefully they accept me just staying in touch with my interviewers enough communication.

Ah great okay! I basically did the same thing. Sent a thank you letter, got ranked, received the highly ranked email a month later, and submitted my letter of intent. Gonna just call it a day. Thank you!

Lol you should be fine. I think (a TOTAL guess on my part) that if they send you a highly ranked email that you probably got ranked a 5. I feel like there is no way that out of 300 people more than 46 got highly ranked. So your LOI should be enough....of course I'm just another hopeful who doesn't know anything for sure. Lol

I went through last years thread for both MN and AZ because I’m a crazy person. There were a few people who got a similar email and were waitlisted. Just wanted to throw that out there so we can do the best we can to maximize our chances!

Haha well, cue my anxiety after I had fooled myself thinking that it was probable that I would get in. Now here comes the wait.

Btw, my interviewer mentioned that February is a more likely timeframe vs January. And other who got a likely email confirm their interviewer said round a bout same thing.

Btw, I am not as illiterate as my posts seem. I have a new phone and the autocorrect makes some odd decisions. Lol
