2017-2018 University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I still have not heard anything! What does this mean? Every time my phone buzzes I have a heart attack 🙁

I think this means they are either sending out rejections/waitlists in batches, or they may potentially have some acceptances left. Hard to tell at this point, but you will likely hear this week I would think!

I have yet to hear anything still...(I interviewed all the way back in October🙁) A friend who currently attends UNCSOM did mention that the WL info was dispersed out in batches throughout this week, at least last year. Sorry if anybody has already addressed that, I am just now looking at this thread!

I also interviewed in October and am still waiting.... 6 months is a long time!

WOW. It seems that being interviewed in October is really bad luck. I wonder if we all interviewed by the same person.
It will be so aggravating if/when us October interviewees receive the rejected status update.....since they basically had six months where they could have rejected us but waited until now to do so😵

Sorry to hear that. Wish you good luck with other SOMs.
Is it by e-mail or portal?
Still nothing here. Wondering what is going on.
Anyone else has not heard anything since interview?
I got the email notifying me of a portal update.
I actually called Ms. Reid earlier today, who is recovering from bronchitis and was out for a few weeks 🙁 Today's just her third day back in the office (and still sounded pretty miserable), so just bear with her and the rest of the admissions office as they work through any other delays!

I am so sorry to hear this, you have been so helpful on this thread! I am really hoping you hear good news elsewhere. Good luck to everyone still waiting.
:') Thank you so much! The comradeship here is wonderful - I should've joined SDN earlier! 😛
I'll have to reapply, perhaps this coming cycle. Best of luck, everyone!!! Go listen to some LOTR music and remember that there's always hope even in the unlikeliest of dreams.

Rejected just now via portal update. Honestly, I am relieved to know 100% what school I'm going to be at next year. UNC was my number 1 choice but I feel relief knowing my path is set in stone now. Good luck to anyone still waiting, I know how painful the wait is.

I just received a call with the same wonderful news. No mention of the name of the scholarship. I'm also OOS.
Congrats!! I'm still undecided. Received an even better offer elsewhere so we shall see but good job!

Does anyone know if UNC is open to asking for more aid. I got into a school that is ranked higher than UNC that is offering me more financial aid, but UNC is still my #1 choice. Has anyone successfully gotten more aid from them before?

Rejected today, IS. I'm glad I finally know so I can officially commit to another school. Good luck to everyone else!

It wouldn't hurt to try. I am kind of in a similar situation as well.

Can't complain. My worst fear was being waitlisted the whole summer and feeling in limbo, not knowing when to commit to another school I've been accepted at.

Why don't you go to the other school, especially if it is ranked higher than UNC?

Should we be getting our Financial aid packages today? If so, where would we see them?

I got mine earlier this week, they emailed me saying it was available on ConnectCarolina!

mine still say "processing" with no active link. I wonder if I am missing something. What forms were we supposed to submit

They're probably still working on it then! I think the only thing we had to submit was FAFSA

Has anyone from the waitlist heard any news lately?

I received a called yesterday afternoon about a merit scholarship. She didn't mention the name of it but it was worth a lot of money.. so maybe its the Blanchard idk.
I know you already withdrew your acceptance, but can you give me a realistic idea of how much UNC gives in scholarship. I know it varies between different offers, but if you don't mind sharing, was yours 10K, 20K, 30K or more? Did it repeat annually? Thank you!

So my merit scholarship was renewable and it was worth 32K a year. Hope that helps..

Just got accepted off of the waitlist!! Wish the rest of you the best of luck, and thank you all for the support during this process!
That's awesome! I received an email about a Pre-oreintation checklist today around noon, but did not receive any other information or portal update. If you would not mind sharing, what did you receive?

I just got details on the white coat ceremony, orientation, and a reminder to send them all transcripts. They also sent a link to the incoming student website which had the pre-orientation checklist, orientation week details, and first-year resources.

Thanks for responding - seems we got the same email. I reached out to the admissions office who said we should receive an acceptance package by Friday. Congratulations again!!!

Thank you, you as well!

How did you hear this information?? I just received an email about pre-orientation information, but it didn't specifically say I was accepted.
I got the same email and called Ms. Reid. Feel free to do the same but otherwise you should receive more information on Friday. Apparently, they wanted to send out all the documents later this week but somehow the pre-orientation one got out first explaining the confusion - when I received mine I was like "Oh no if this is a mistake I am going to cry myself to sleep over a gallon of Rocky Road and some Oprah!" 🙂 Congratulations!

Congrats everyone! I am applying to UNC with a fairly strong application, but I realized today that I meet all but one of the course requirements: I didn't take Gen Chem II lab because I had AP credit (MSAR says UNC doesn't accept AP credit). I'm out of school now, but I'm wondering how to proceed... Worst case, I'll enroll in the lab during my gap year.

EDIT: I checked out UNC Med's page and it says they accept AP credit, so MSAR was wrong in this case.

"Advanced Placement (AP) courses are accepted as long as they appear on your official undergraduate transcript. If you have received AP credit for any of the required science, or Behavioral/Social Sciences courses, we do require that you to take advanced-level college courses to enhance your academic preparation for medical school. Your AP courses must meet the equivalent semester hours required, including any of the associating labs."

Does anyone know if UNC provides any step 1 study resources (Firecracker, pathoma, boards and beyond, etc.)?

Same, but the link to the portal has no option available for me to pay the deposit. *Reply's to email- NO TAKE BACKS!*

Same here. I called Ms. Reid and she said there isn’t anything we can really do until we get our electronic official offer sometime this coming week, other than respond to that email stating we’re accepting the offer.

Unrelated, but would any current UNC med students be open to a quick conversation by phone or email? I'm a visiting away student and would love some tips on best places to stay ect. Just shoot me a private message if you'd be willing to have a quick convo.

Thanks!
