2017-2018 Wayne State University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
WSU still has not updated my status yet (pre-II) as I'm still in the Applicant in Review Pool. I updated my Fall transcript under the additional doc dropbox on 1/10. Would it be wise to also attach a letter of interest and an updated CV? Thank you!
Someone said they send II through mid-February. They don’t send out rejections until the end. Maybe if your status hasn’t updated by the end of February, assume it is a silent R? I’m on the waitlist and i sent a combo of an update and letter of interest, but nothing has changed, so I’m not sure if it helped. It doesn’t hurt to try though!

not a thing. Not even a rejection. They've received everything from me back in October.
For those still in silence, I would remain hopeful based on the fact that there's been a massive increase in applications this year and the admissions committee is probably pretty far behind in terms of reviewing the applications. At this point last year they had offered ~950 interviews compared to this year's ~700.

Anyone know why the Michigan state schools have gotten so many more applications this year than usual (like thousands more)? Or is this a nationwide occurrence?

I want to say this is happening everywhere. It seems like most, if not all, of the schools I was rejected from said "we have received a record number of applications this year" or " we have had a large increase in the number of applications" or something of the sort.

I think its because they did more advertising than usual. For example, we all know this school almost lost it's accreditation a few years ago, due to some issues with diversity with their classes *cough*. So they probably went out of their way to send invites to more students suggesting they apply to Michigan to help fix that issue.

But that is just my thoughts on it.

Also, I'm pretty sure they reduced their out of state tuition by a great deal, so that's obviously a huge incentive to apply.

Where are you guys getting info on tuition?

Tuition for OOS was lowered by 13.3%.

The school was given a two year period to fix diversity issues and a need for more independent/self learning in the curriculum; both of which were fixed pretty handily IMO. The past fall's accreditation visit was stellar by all accounts. Michigan as a whole is seeing an increase in application numbers, especially OOS.

I'd be wary of the admission tracker, its almost always outdated. To my knowledge they also aren't backlogged on reviews; they've been meeting quite regularly and consistently. What could be happening is that your interviewer presenting your application hasn't been at the meetings themselves.

Best of luck to everyone!

According to that article " The recommendation is aimed at increasing the number and quality of applicants, and students of color at the university that has been working to create a more diverse medical school student body, officials said ".

Something is seriously wrong if you're class size is close to 300 students, yet you only have 5 black students and 2 Hispanics.

From what I read it was 1 black student and 2 Hispanics out of a class of like 276, but yeah something went on there. Especially considering that nearly 80% of Detroit is African American.

Does anyone know if there is anything admitted students need to be doing? I got my acceptance back in October and all I know is I have to send in the background check and transcripts. When do I send a deposit or commit to attending this fall?

Added question: when can we expect to hear back about scholarships/financial aid?

status hasnt changed since supplemental application in September... Should I be discouraged?

Those that interviewed in the AM session: Do you end at 12pm on the dot, or earlier? Would there be enough time to schedule a 2pm flight out of Detroit? How long is the TSA wait at Detroit's airport?

I haven’t interviewed but I live in the area and I will say even if you are getting off at 12 you’re cutting it close because the airport is about 20-30 mins from Wayne state. TSA usually isn’t terrible but it depends on the day

Apparently, based on past threads, all February interviewees get waitlisted...

Plenty of people both my year and the year following got in directly in January, February, etc. Anecdotal obviously...

I think a major problem with SDN is that people too often take what is or isn't posted as a representation of the entire applicant pool. Many of my closest friends have never even heard of SDN. In that light, it'd be pretty hard to imagine those types of people posting about their acceptances or lack there of.

If you get an interview you have a good shot!

I am a current applicant (already interviewed), just wondering about the post acceptance process. Do you have to submit specific info for the background check, or is this automatic through AMCAS? I also know a lot of schools require drug screens (even hair tests), but I have not seen anything mentioning it on their website. And how long do they give for you to accept an offer of admission? Sorry for all the questions; I am just confused what exactly I need to do if I am accepted. I tend to think ahead so just wanted to get a good idea in case I get in!

All I've gotten from Wayne is utter silence since July :/

You may have done this and if you have, I apologize. Have you been checking your portal and Wayne email? When I got an II, my portal was updated and they sent an email to my Wayne email. I never got anything in my regular email. Again. if you have done these things and still nothing, just ignore me.

Same! Getting bored of waiting over here! Anybody (maybe recent interviewees?) hear anything about the next expected decision release? :beat:

I am getting anxious. I just want a decision before freaking July! When I called like in mid January, Dawn said they are not meeting until mid Feb, but someone said they got off the waitlist recently... I honestly have no idea what Wayne is doing.

Would be nice if they at least updated their admissions tracker once in a while lol
