Does anyone know how many Canadian/International applicants usually get invited to interview?

Sorry I'm late to the game y'all, but I'm an M2 here and am available to answer questions about UVA, cville and the interview!

From MSAR, it looks like a fairly low percentage of OOS applicants are accepted after interviewing, is that accurate? Does the interview focus much on why UVA in particular, or are they just selective in the usual ways?

OOS here. Done with most of my secondaries but never got around to this one because of the mcat numbers. I’ll just send it in anyway, but I got it July 8. Has it been too long?

edit: looking at this thread, it's actually kind of obvious that OOS high mcats get interviewed first. Not sure if sending this early would've helped at all. If anything, I'd get an interview after October or November. Nbd, I'll just put my name in the hat anyhow.

I think they're just selective in the usual ways. UVA fills half its class with Virginia residents, which is less than average for a state school. However, that does lead to a disproportionate amount of OOS vs IS applicants applying for the same number of spots, so selection does apply. It's more likely a function of the greater number of applicants per OOS slot. I was OOS and I think the most my interviewer asked was how have you been liking it so far, have you enjoyed your day here, etc. That being said, different interviewers might hit that question more, but mine didn't. They do ask about "why UVA" more specifically on the secondary so I wonder if it's less emphasized in the interview for everyone.

Any tips for the interview? What kinds of questions do they usually ask?

Their questions are pretty normal - definitely didn't stand out to me as throwing any curve balls. Basic things about your background, what led you into medicine, what your family is like, what hobbies you have outside medicine, how you got into some of the ECs you listed on your app and expanded stories about those, etc. The interviewers I got were very conversational. Obviously do review what you wrote in your application, because that makes the different topics a little fresher in your mind leading to a more natural conversation, but thankfully they don't try to trip you up.

One thing I loved about UVA's interview was that the faculty asked me "do you have any questions for me" at the end like any other interview, but with the qualifier "and it can be about anything, including my career and research, student life, Charlottesville etc." Half the time at interviews most of the basic medical student questions you could ask at that part are already available on the website, but with this one I felt more open to actually ask what I was curious about (in my case, I wanted to know about the interviewer's career and why she went into academic medicine).

So I guess long story short, try to get comfortable and ask the questions you're really curious about an answer to, not necessarily what you think they want you to ask (as is sometimes coached).

Ask some things you're curious about to the students who take you on the tour as well - their perspective is often more applicable to you as a prospective med student, and they're usually M3s/M4s who know more about the clinical rotations too.

Also, come hungry because UVA easily had the best lunch of ANY interview I went on. It's a high class buffet on grounds near the lawn.

All the application categories on my secondary status says complete but it still states that my application is missing one or more of the required items. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

This happened to me too, I called the admissions office and they fixed it. Not sure why it happened though

Added UVA a bit late but just submitted the secondary today!

Do people think a big round of interviews here will be coming out soon? Feel like I haven't seen much action from UVA

Does UVA screen before sending out secondaries? Still thinking about whether I should give it a shot or not

Anyone know if the admissions office has space to store a suitcase during the interview day? I emailed to ask but haven’t heard back yet.
