What is an in-the-area email? Asking for a friend but also for myself.

I think it is an email notifying the adcoms that you have an interview scheduled at a nearby school in hopes they would be able to accommodate an interview the same time (if they are planning on sending you an II).
Eg. California resident has interview scheduled at Oakland for Last week in September. Would send an in-the-area email to Wayne asking if they could interview the same week since they will be in the area
