2018-2019 Yale University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Saw the new admissions director leave the building yesterday at around 8:30 pm as I was going to the basement gym (admissions is in the same building as the dorm/gym). Just a quick reminder for those who might have impatient thoughts (omg I've been complete for a week, did I get reviewed yet???????) how incredibly hard people in the office work during this especially busy time of the application season.

Talk of "silent rejection" already? C'mon people. Takes a looooooooooooooooong time to read all that **** you and everyone else wrote in your application. It's hard to do given the pressure, but let's just try to be a little more understanding!

I just got an email from Yale:

"Dear ----,

Congratulations on your hard work and success on the MCAT. We know that you have many choices to consider when it comes to medical school—and we want Yale School of Medicine (YSM) to be a part of that consideration.

Since 1810, YSM has been educating future physicians and is the sixth oldest medical school in the country. At the heart of our medical education is the Yale System, which emphasizes collaborative learning, provides curricular flexibility and allows students time to focus on their career interests as well as engage in independent research. In fact, writing a thesis based on original research is a cornerstone of the Yale System dating back to 1839. But we urge you to consider YSM for one other poignant reason: our financial aid.

YSM is committed to making medical school affordable by meeting 100% of every applicant’s demonstrated need. This means graduating with less debt than the average new physician. To illustrate: in 2017 YSM graduates had an average debt of $121k—36% less than the average U.S. medical school graduate who shoulders $192k in debt.

How does this translate? If your annual family income is <=$125,000, your parent contribution from income will be $0 (there may still be a contribution from assets); additional allowances will be made for families with incomes from $125,000—$165,000; the unit loan borrowing expectation has been lowered to $23,000. This means YSM is affordable for students with the greatest need.

Example: Family with full financial need

YSM Total Cost: $86,647 (includes tuition, room & board, healthcare, fees & expenses)
Family Income: $120,000
Family Contribution: $0
Unit Loan: $23,000 (required borrowing for students receiving financial aid)
YSM Scholarship: $63,647 (i.e. gift aid that you do not have to repay)

** In the above example, the student debt at graduation will be <$100k.

To help you get to know YSM better, please see our Facts and Figures brochure. We encourage you to learn more about our educational philosophy, patient care, and research, too. We hope you seriously consider pursuing your medical education with us and look forward to receiving your application.

AMCAS Application Deadline: October 15, 2018
Yale Secondary Application Deadline: November 15, 2018

We wish you all the best.

Yale School of Medicine—Office of Admissions""

I was not planning on applying here but do you think it is worth the shot since I got that email?

This is just PR. Dean Alpern sent a restatement of principles to all staff and students today as well that outlined the same exact policies. Don't read into it. That being said, the answer is always apply!!! Can't hurt. Fee waiver suggestion was a great one too

Good luck to everyone applying! MS4 here who's applying to residency at the moment, so I totally forgot to pop in earlier on in the season in between prepping my application and taking the USMLEs.

Congrats everyone! MS1 MD/PhD here, everyone's already setting up for hosting you guys!!! So crazy that the next wave is already coming in behind us. See you soon!

Anecdotally (from friends) and based on this thread, Yale seems quick to give out interview invites after you submit secondaries. Is it normal to receive one 1+ months after you're complete here?

Depends on the characteristics of the app probably, definitely doesn't seem like they're sending them chronologically

Looking back at my MDapps from all those years ago, I got mine over 2 months after I was complete... And I ended up being accepted.

I would keep in mind that there is a new Admissions Director this year, so things may be slightly different. I'm sure the process is similar, but I wouldn't expect it to be exactly the same.

I really wanna know how Yale filters applications. Like how can people get an answer within days of applying while some are still waiting for a response after months of being complete? (Nothing against those who hear back soon tho)

Is there a formal student hosting program for the night before the interview?

Hi All! I'm a first year with a newly minted white coat making myself available to answer any questions you may have regarding Yale, your future interview here, etc.! For now, my only advice is to stay positive through the next 6 months (avoid checking sdn all the time). Yale is truly non-rolling and sporadically sends IIs. There's no rhyme or reason to the process that will seem apparent to anyone outside of admissions. I wish you all the best and want you all to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel 🙂

Edit: if you have questions regarding your upcoming interview - getting here, finding a host, having your first interview, etc., feel free to PM me!

MSTP - rejected today and moved to the MD pool. Complete 08/16,, looks like another ~8 weeks of waiting to get my second R

non-Canadian International, non-traditional , that's all I want to share 🙂

Anyone know if there's preferred way for sending Thank You notes to Yale post-interview? Some schools want email, others prefer directly uploading it to the portal, it's a minor detail, but still would appreciate any insight?

I believe it's email. I sent mine via email (and got responses if that matters).

Wait bro you're not prewriting them and giving them to the interviewers three-quarters of the way through your interviews? What's this, rookie hour? Might as well wait for auto reject now man..

:naughty:

They are very international friendly, trust me I'm a fellow Non-Canadian Intl, keep the faith going!

Interviewed here yesterday.

Naturally, I can't talk about the content of my interviews. But, this is my home institution so PM me if you have questions!
