2019-2020 Columbia VP&S

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I really hope columbia comes out this week otherwise next week will be a terrible week with Harvard and penn also coming out 🙁

Btw would you consider Columbia over NYU?
My two cents: If they have a low EFC, Columbia is probably a better choice cuz of the need based scholarship. If they have a high EFC, it’s probably smarter to stick with the free tuition. Unless money is not a concern at all: Putting money aside completely, Columbia is a more attractive school than NYU imho.

I thought NYU is now considered a top 5 after giving full tuition scholarships?

NYU figured out how to game the US news ranking system, but in terms of reputation and prestige they are not t5. On the residency director ranking (the ranking that actually matters for matching) nyu is around 20.

I think “game the system” is a bit harsh. A less malicious and more accurate take would be that they’ve recently taken huge steps to improve their medical school, but reputation is something that’s built over decades.

Anyone know if there’s a time that calls usually go out around
just based on the threads from the last 2 years, people first reported getting calls between 9:30-10:30 AM (EST I think?). And I'm guessing they went on throughout the late morning/afternoon. I hate that I even looked this up 😳

NYU is probably the hardest school to get into in the country right now. From my PI, the chiefs/residency/program directors at my hospital (big academic center in the northeast) all know this. Apparently they are weighting NYU applicants quite heavily because of this.

No idea if this is true everywhere, but my PI has been making the argument that the reputation of NYU will only increase as years pass and more people apply. I don't know when the residency director ranking list that people refer to was made, but my guess would be that residency directors are very aware of how qualified you have to be to get into NYU.

FWIW, I am in at NYU and my columbia interviewers gave a very strong impression that I'd get in a Columbia (but who ****ing knows its so random), so I've been thinking about this a lot over the last months.

If it was coming out this week, is it more likely its today or tomorrow based on patterns?

Honestly I think any school in the top 10-15 is going to put you on a basically even playing field with other top15 students and the exact school you come from matters less than your LOR and what you do with your time in med school and that’s really going to be what makes you competitive or not. Really digging into whether the prestige of NYU vs Columbia vs Harvard Is going to affect your ability to match to a competitive residency is just conjecture and probably not super meaningful. The good news is you have at least one amazing option and it seems like you will probably be able to choose based on fit and campus culture. Congrats!!

Yeah....I wouldn’t say that in a forum full of anxious people who probably (definitely) got the R from NYU. deep down (real fluffing deep) we’re happy for you, but that statement is 25 steps beyond a humble brag to just bragging. We get it, you have a great future and I’m sure you’ll be happy at NYU or Columbia and residency directors will love you. Now let the rest of us worry in peace.

Haha sure @spontaneous23, if this week "was" the week, it could be today or tomorrow based on patterns. but it's prob just gonna be next week (*tries to protect the little sanity I have left*)...
