2019-2020 Columbia VP&S

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I get p=0.02 for this year's data, but I found data last updated August 2018 that had IS% at 29 and OOS% at 27 so who knows

edit: the website I used originally did Chi-squared over Z-test so I edited the p value (0.0001->0.002)
Year to year variability could also explain the discrepancy between IS and OOS acceptance rates.

Yeah, we would definitely need a lot more data to draw a reliable conclusion. Last year was also the first year with the new traffic rules which generated a lot of uncertainty as far as admissions decisions go.

Either way, it's clearly competitive post-interview whether you're IS or OOS!

38% so a pretty decent difference. I’d imagine IS people probably have an easier time expressing why Columbia especially considering that they had a pretty big emphasis on serving the communities directly around campus. They also interview waaaaay fewer IS than OOS so it could be just be due to randomness and not some quality that IS interviewees possess

do you think it would make a difference if we go to school in nyc but not a ny resident.

Maybe, but in a more convoluted way if at all. Columbia doesn't ask the "why us" question, IIRC. I think it's probably mostly the interviewing less IS people -> more competitive IS people but I could be wrong

I'd say it's likely that IS applicants are more likely to attend if accepted, and this explains the bias

But where weren’t asked why columbia 😕

Yeah it’s interesting tho Bc I called like two weeks ago asking if I sent in an update now if it made a difference and they said yeah absolutely to send it in but I interviewed in September so either they just say yes to avoid getting into long discussions without neurotic applicants and they never read it or they do see it and re evaluate apps?? Idk
But also if two applicants submit their secondaries at the same Time and one hears back interviews in September and the other Hears back and interviews in February I wonder if it means that the first Applicant was rated more highly and that if most of the As have been decided, interviewing later means you’re competing for less spots??
Idk i got too much time y’all none of this matters at this stage
We’re definitely competing for lesser spots if we interviewed late imo. But then again, my opinion means nothing

MSTP website says mid-Feb and I think MD-only is late Feb. So MSTP will probably be before.

JA team where ya at

Late to this, but I also got a random post-interview email from JA (separate from a response to the thank-you note on my portal). In addition to mentioning how he enjoyed the interview, he wrote that "you are a stellar candidate and I let the Admissions Committee know that you are a perfect fit."

Idk if I should be overexcited about this??? Does this bode well or is he just ridiculously nice...

Also got veeeerrrry positive emails from JA. I think they are an exceptionally nice person who advocates for us but I wouldn't let that downplay your excitement!

For those that are still in the dark since submitting your secondary, I was told by the admissions office that applications are "still under review". I'm not sure when the last interview date is, though, so take that as you will.

Didn’t get that so you got a leg up on me!

JA squad checkin in, +3 on that positive email 😉

he must’ve taken a lot of time to write these bc I’m assuming your emails were also personal to you and your apps.

Honestly hats off for JA. Even if I don't get in they were the most positive and transparent interviewing reaction that I've had all cycle. Super refreshing.

Their interviewers really are all super nice from what I’ve seen. DQ was really nice too both directly after my interview and in his response to my thank you note.

Dam I also had JA (late in the cycle) but didn't get a response to my thank you ... 🙁 feels bad

In general though, he's seems like a super cool guy. I heard he stays connected with anyone who interviews w him and eventually gets in.

Is it even worth it to send fall semester grades as an update at this point? I put it off (and would still like to) and now that decisions are almost here, it feels like it won't make a difference.

I'd hold off.

If anything, send it it with a LOI after initial decisions if they don't go your way.

is there really any harm in submitting the grades as an update now, and doing an LOI later? I don't see why everything has to go into one upload. It all just goes into your file. I say do what you want, just don't expect the grades to affect the late Feb decision. But I wouldn't try to overthink the timing of when to upload what.

Most schools won’t bat an eye at updates (grades or otherwise) at this time in the cycle. That said, it would make most sense to wait till you have a decision before sending them anything, where updates have the most impact.

You can theoretically send anything through at any time. But if you can wait and lower the risk of slipping through the cracks, why not?
