2019-2020 Columbia VP&S

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
People are hoping to avoid negatively impacting their application, which should be understandable.

but how is that possible to negatively impact their application? Unless you are lying about being in the area to game the system, and unless you are caught doing that, isn't it very flattering to the school that you want them??

Some schools say explicitly not to send them. Not following instructions can negatively impact an app.

but they don't know who want more than others!
But literally anyone can send an ITA email. It doesn't prove anything.

They might believe you are trying to "game the system" and get an II over others. While yeah you are showing interest, you are possibly running the risk of coming off as pretentious to think you "deserve" the II.

If we paid money to apply, we want them. As a Californian, I'm just trying to strategically decide if I should email schools to try and save quite a bit of travel money.
umm.. I would! It makes absolutely no sense to fly coast to coast more than once if you can consolidate them into one!

Of course! That's why ITA emails exist (not to show interest). But the point is that some schools dgaf if you're in the area and may even expressly tell applicants not to send ITA emails, so people are just inquiring if this is one of those schools.

sorry, we paid 130 bucks...

If anyone who's interviewing here wants to be the real MVP and try to casually ask the admissions staff if they've started interviewing for Bassett yet I know @ris2014 and I would <3 you forever 😉
+1, Bassett program is my top choice and the wait is killer
It may help if you look at past years' threads and see if anyone indicated when IIs for Bassett typically go out. I did this for the program I applied to (special program at Columbia, but not Bassett) and discovered that IIs for my program historically don't go out until late November.

No doubt, good idea. kinda hard to tell based on the last 2 yrs from what I see

But the fact that all 3 of us are still waiting is prob a good sign!

Forgot to ask this above but what prog did you apply to?

Also which prog did you apply to?
FWIW, my friend interviewed at Bassett last year and she did not get an invite to interview at regular Columbia MD/Columbia-Bassett until the end of November (like the last week). Her interview for the program was in January, and I believe there are a few dates that they release acceptances for that program starting in mid-late January!

II this morning wtf, I sent an ITA like a week ago. I found out from an email from their diversity department, checked my spam and found the mail! I also saw another II that went to spam. CHECK YOUR SPAM

Complete 8/4

Edit: II was sent on the 25th!

congrats!!! 🙂 what interview dates were available?

what is an ITA email?
"In the Area." If you live far away from a school and you happen to be visiting the area around the school for another interview or just cuz you are visiting some schools are receptive of ITA emails so that if they plan on offering you an interview they might give it to you at the time you are around to save you travel costs.

thanks!

Does anyone know what we should do for thank you letters? Do we just send them to the admissions office email and ask them to forward to our interviewers?

If you have the interviewers' emails, send them the letters first and then upload them to the portal. If you don't have their emails, then just do the portal. That's what I was told.

Super Neurotic Warning: When we get emails such as from the Office of Diversity wishing us luck and encouraging to reach out should we be responding with a thank you or is that dumb? It seems dumb but med school apps is like a whole different culture.

I'm wondering about this too.. I'd think it would be a little extra to just send an email saying "thanks," especially since they probably get so many emails already

Most recent II recipients, can y’all comment on what dates were available?

Also, I believe Columbia isn’t rolling, so there’s no advantage between early or late interviewing, correct?

Columbia is not rolling. They said they will release all decisions late February or early March and select the class once all interviews have concluded. The jury still seems to be out on whether II or interview attendance dates make a difference at these non-rolling schools, as we don’t know if preliminary decisions are made behind the scenes. Some of the current students i met interviewed in February though, so it can definitely happen!

Columbia for whatever reason releases ahead of all Ivies, as early as early February. Try to finish your interviews before the last few dates available since they are already making decisions and it is impossible to rank everyone with one week to spare. They put most people on waitlist which is a different problem in itself since that list is not ranked.

What?!? So are people pulled off the waitlist by just dumb luck?

How would they know that?
If I am not mistaken, everyone joins facebook groups and other groups which are easy to snoop on but there is also a requirement to share as deadlines approach who is holding how many admissions. This is one reason people admit you but announce scholarships and financial packages much later after the admission.

That's correct. Also if anyone knows, does earlier interviews = more competitive applicants, or just that they got to your application by that time? Asking for neuroses
