2019-2020 Columbia VP&S

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
NYU is probably the hardest school to get into in the country right now. From my PI, the chiefs/residency/program directors at my hospital (big academic center in the northeast) all know this. Apparently they are weighting NYU applicants quite heavily because of this.

No idea if this is true everywhere, but my PI has been making the argument that the reputation of NYU will only increase as years pass and more people apply. I don't know when the residency director ranking list that people refer to was made, but my guess would be that residency directors are very aware of how qualified you have to be to get into NYU.

FWIW, I am in at NYU and my columbia interviewers gave a very strong impression that I'd get in a Columbia (but who ****ing knows its so random), so I've been thinking about this a lot over the last months.
it’s updated every year. Here is the 2019 version.

Aren't residency directors weighing schools based on the clinical experience and training and opportunities students get, not how hard it was for them to get into that school? Is the rating is based on the school itself, and how prepared that student is for residency?
Think of the above Statement about Directors as a forward looking statement recognizing that NYU is matriculating the top of the top students with their free tuition and as such have some of the highest potential as residents.

Let’s face facts—just because you’re smart and get a 528 doesn’t make you a good doctor or a good resident. Nor does acing an MMI. Continuing to put in work, being considerate of others and aware of your impacts, as well as being intelligent and willing to learn does.
We will all one day be residents (hopefully)—no need to start touting your chances at top residencies, especially when we are all anxious about decisions coming out! There’s a better forum for that than a school specific one full of posts of people wondering about what day they’ll hear about their dream school.

remember, there are three things in life that are important: 1. Be kind (to yourself) 2. Be kind (to others) 3. Be kind (to the planet)

luv, mom

But isn’t the MMI suppose to test for these qualities?

Not holding an NYU A here.

My response was to above poster answering a question. It made no assumption nor definition of top student.

Dear Mum,
Remember, what happens when you ASSUME; and putting your nose in where it doesn’t belong could get it bitten off. Not holding an NYU A here.

My response was to above poster answering a question. It made no assumption nor definition of top student, and certainly not as narrowly implied as you have done.

Can we just cool it? You’re not holding any acceptances at all because you are not a person who is applying, you’re a person who is a parent of a person applying.

Maybe you should respect that it’s a lot easier to be anxious when you’re the one going through it.

I was being sarcastic re the last line of my note, sorry if that didn’t come through. Thought I was responding to the person who was super into NYU vs Columbia.... my bad y’all!

the MMI just tests who can successfully give an interviewer the cookie cutter answer that they want to hear and I will die on this ship. Anyone, from actual well adjusted future doctors, to some rando capable of burying their psychosis for 8 minutes can achieve this.

I'd be less anxious too if I wasn't the person actually going through the app process i mean....

I'm gonna sidestep this... interesting discussion to throw in my unaccepted-at-Columbia's (duh) 2 cents.

On NYU vs Columbia: Besides tuition (if you wouldn't meet Columbia's need-based criteria), I think that it depends on your personal bent. Columbia seems to be where you want to go if you really want to work with underserved communities. Both schools have really good research programs, but that's why Columbia is my clear top choice. If this isn't a factor for you, then perhaps NYU would be a better fit?

Me checking back in on this thread after being at work all day

Totally - the wildest thing was the nyu tour guide emphasizing that community-oriented health wasn't a big thing at the school. That was sad
Just lurking on this thread, but I'm very surprised to hear about NYU. One of its teaching hospitals is Bellevue, one of the oldest and largest public hospitals in the country. You'd think they'd emphasize community health more given the diversity of patients it serves...

I was surprised too. But I definitely got that feeling during the interview. Usually the student-run clinics, advocacy, and community initiatives are the thing that Adcoms love to tout during their presentation. But I didn’t hear a peep about it from them, nor the students.

N=1 experience here and I was still quite impressed by NYU, but this is why Columbia edged it out for me. The school just felt so well-ingrained within the neighborhood. Perhaps because I grew up in a city that was primarily rich in Hispanic, Latino, and Chicano culture, Columbia felt familiar in a way.

And disclaimer: I’m riding an NYU waitlist that will probably never move, so I don’t have a large enough horse in the game to look into their programs further - I might easily be wrong.

Guys go enjoy your weekend!! Heard from a reallly reliable source (someone in admissions) that it’s next week. No need to drive ourselves crazy (more than this process has already lol)
Sounds good! Did you graduate Columbia undergrad in 2018? So did I! lol
