Just got the email. First quartile but I had already received an email last week saying I was designated as a high priority. Did anyone else get that email?

I have not received one, I didn't know they gave out specific information on quartiles

I went through old SDN threads and found that it varies widely. 2015-2016 had very little movement overall and accepted people off the WL starting in late May. 2016-2017 was accepting people from Q2 by mid May and got down to the bottom of the WL by the end. 2017-2018 started moving in early May and got down to Q2 by the end. 2018-2019 had someone post that they got off the WL on April 30th and it appears they didn't get all the way through Q1 by the end. This is just based on prior posts so its possible there was more movement and people didn't post it or I could be missing information.

Also first quartile. Already committed somewhere else and gave up here but now I’m hopeful again lol

I got the same email last week, and now this email about being 1Q also.

I wonder how many ppl are in the first quartile y’all think you’re going to wait it out

AACOMAS just sent out an email today saying that schools will review applications that don't have an MCAT score for the 2020-2021 cycle, but they also said that many schools will wait for an MCAT score before extending admissions offers. Does anyone know how this would affect DMU?

AACOMAS honestly doesn't have much say in this, they can ask schools to review applications without MCAT but it is totally up to the schools. I highly doubt that schools will consider your applications seriously without MCAT scores (they might say they will to AACOMAS but in fact they won't).

I think it was a combination of the merger and just student preference. Mostly student preference because boards and such were just as good as previous
Yeah I gotcha! Sooooo many fam med. How much should I weigh in on this? Especially as someone w/ surgery dreams? Vs places like KCU or RVU w/ lots of surgery matches.

2/3 of the time its student preference. We have a lot of people in my class that HATE surgery, myself included haha You can't look too much into match lists at all regardless of how much you want to. For you, there are plenty of surgery opportunities here I wouldn't worry about it. The surgery club here does a lot and you can reach out to the big hospital centers (not during COVID obviously)

Match lists are way too individualized to be reliably judged in any way at all. People have much different preferences on specialty, location, academic vs community setting, program fit, etc. For me personally, I think the learning and interpersonal atmosphere in these 'top' residencies would make it much less enjoyable for me due to the rat race they put you in to publish, etc. Not to mention personality differences. Its all preference.

All you can do is bust your butt and make a good of an application as possible. There are a decent amount of "SDN-worthy" matches every year too

Hey. I’m trying to build my budget for MS1. The official DMU budget shows $3100 for books. Are all the books necessary or can we do well in class with lecture notes and occasional library rentals?

You don't need that much at all. Although I recommend taking out the full amount for at least first semester just so you can get a feel of what you'll need to live normally. You have like 60 days or something to give some back, and you can always just take out less later on. When you're out of money you're out of money so avoiding that is probably best haha

That makes sense. Thank you!

I just got in touch with the Imperial Apartments across the street from campus. They notified me that they will not let any DMU student sign a new lease. The reason is that DMU main campus will be moving away from the apartments, thus they are trying to let "normal" tenants in instead of a bunch of DMU students who they suppose will be "gone" along with the campus.

They can always fine new people once the actual campus moves in 2023/2024... that's pretty ****ty of them. Is DMU working with them to figure something out so students can secure housing there?

It's probably due to Des Moines being a smaller city so the pool of potential tenants isn't as robust as that of larger cities. I really hope that other nearby apartments do not possess the same train of thought. I do not think DMU communicates with private-owned apartments.

Isn’t that discrimination and illegal?

They really want to lose out on potentially 4 years of guaranteed rent for something that won’t happen for another 4 years?

Thanks for letting us know so we can cross that place off the list.

Look into Reilly Grand, 3000 Grand, and the rest of the ones on grand. They’re better anyway
Hard to score a studio there according to the person I talked to. None is up for vacancy in the next few months 🙁

Is it safe to say that there are no more IIs, since interview season is over a long time ago? Asking because I haven't received an official pre-II R letter yet.

I Believe the last interview session was at the end of March. They already began organizing the waitlist. Sorry, it doesn’t look so good

Add Grand Prix to the list of not renting to DMU students due to "the transition". Seems like they are managed by the same people.

Damn, they were my second choice.

Honestly, I might just go downtown if the other complexes are going to be like this. I’m going to contact my top choice today.
