2019-2020 Kansas

Interviewed October 3, got my decision email today, and I'm in the majority of "waitlisted" applicants until March as the previous years. Looks like the top people and the bottom people also got their decisions.

Good luck to everyone out there!

If you all have any questions regarding the interview process, let me know! I'm a 2nd cycle reapplicant, I kind of "know" my way through this system XD

I am OOS and received an II today. I am surprised because they definitely indicate that nonresidents will not be invited until January! Relatively strong Kansas ties.

II just now! OOS with strong state ties.

I have a couple of questions regarding the interview - if anyone could offer their insights, I would greatly appreciate it!

1. How was the interview experience overall? Is there something you wish you had better prepared for?
2. What is the post-II acceptance rate for OOS applicants?

Thank you in advance!

I interviewed in Wichita and it was super chill. Some questions I had never heard or thought about but they weren't bad. Just be ready for the basics--why medicine, why not another health profession, why kansas (especially for OOS).

Do you mind me asking your stats and ties to kansas? If you prefer PM, I can PM you!

I interviewed at the KC campus and it was pretty enjoyable. They asked me a lot of interesting ethical/dilemma questions (though I didn't get any hot topic ones). The one thing I wish I had done was wear comfier shoes, my feet were dying by the end. Overall a pretty easy day and mostly laid back process.

What does that mean you might get an interview in January due to your MCAT? I thought January dates were for OOS primarily

You should apply DO also. That MCAT could honestly break your chances.

I submitted II as an in-state even before getting my score. So I called admission office after getting my score and asked them if I can retract my application. But they said, apart from my MCAT, every thing looks pretty good so if adcom considers me as a potent applicant, KUSM can call me with OOS candidates.

That's great news! But I'm just curious why they would call you with OOS student if you're IS.

What were the questions about your clinical experiences like? Were they grilling you or just asking you to describe or explain them?

Also they ask "why KU?" if you're instate?
If you do not mind, can you share your stat? you can PM me too if you consider to share

Current KU students--how are your schedules? Do you have a lot of mandatory class, or is a lot of it recorded?

Current KU students--how are your schedules? Do you have a lot of mandatory class, or is a lot of it recorded?

A typical "A" week consists of:
Mon 9-12 lectures not mandatory, all recorded (1 hr delay, they are not live-streamed)
Tues 9-12 same deal
Weds 1-3; mandatory small group case based collaborative learning session typically based on a clinical scenario, lots of things to work through as a group/points to hit, a facilitator (science faculty or clinician) present to make sure you cover everything/help out; 3-4 large group follow up (not mandatory)
Thurs 1-3 problem based learning session with small group, these are essentially very clinical and have no prework to them, and the session is facilitated by a clinician; the scenario takes place over 2 weeks and you have mini research to do in between, you get practice presenting patients.
Fri 9-11 CBCL (like weds); 11-12 followup (not mandatory).

"B" week what's different (usually) is that Friday has nothing on it except our test. PBL sessions (thursdays) are never on the test either so material for B week is done by wednesday (usually).

Coaching is somewhere in there, determined between you and your coach (mine is always on A weeks, he doesn't like to "bug us" on test weeks - lol). Meeting with coach is mandatory a certain number of times per block.

Occasionally you will also have sprinkled through a clinical skills lab activity or a standardized patient encounter, the scheduling on those really depends on what your small group number is and the coordinators for those areas. They flip us around so the last numbered group isnt always the last to go etc. We have a clinical skills test of some kind once a block that we are scored on by a clinician after we've done it in said "lab" situation. Once a block or so we have mandatory "professional development" type sessions, and occasionally we have patient panels - those are always mandatory too. Oh, and dissections - those are sprinkled throughout as well and also mandatory.

As we approach thanksgiving, stuff is a bit wonky (example: this week we have straight lectures M-F 9-12, none are required, last week before CBCL I had a clinical skills lab when usually I have nothing til 1pm, etc.)

I usually podcast most lectures and flips. Sometimes I go to class depending on the topic ("flips" which are interactive are sometimes worth going to especially if classmates will go with you and work through it together) or if I dont want to take the time to watch later (i.e. wednesday follow up to CBCLs on B weeks). You just gotta find what works for you but there's a lot of flexibility and support to do it however you want. Some of us go to campus and podcast, others do it from home.

Lemme know if you have other questions about how it works!

This was so helpful, thank you! I'm just trying to see how friendly KU's schedule is to people with families and how I could balance that. So if I'm understanding correctly, exams are typically every other week?

Yes, typically you have a test every other week. We refer to them as A week (non test week) and B week (test week). It averages out to ~4 tests per block. (not including skills tests - thats about once per block)

I'd say anecdotally it is pretty family friendly; I am married and I have several classmates who are married / a few who have children too.

Thank you so much! Hoping to get some love from KU soon 🙂

I was complete in early September.

what is the concensus in terms of tech device. I am looking to purchase an ipad pro 12inch vs surface pro. Current students please comment on that.

Plenty of us use either honestly; I have an ipad pro from before I started and have been using that. I also have a laptop and essentially use onenote between the two for most things. However, we do have tech requirements computer-wise so if you are planning to use it as your sole computing device, the surface is the way to go as it probably meets the specs. Notably, you can't take your exams on an ipad but a surface would be able to since its a full windows system.

Tech requirements are here - Minimum Technology Recommendations for School of Medicine Students

Is this super common? What exactly does it mean?
KU is annoying and doesn’t do rolling admissions, so there is no advantage to applying early. Basically they just review everyone and tell them in March if accepted. I think around 70% of the class doesn’t find out until March.

When I interviewed, they specifically said they do not accept updates at any point during the cycle.

Wait what. When I emailed the admissions office, they said they do accept updates...

Weird. I remember them saying that once they scored our application, we couldn’t do anything to change it.

I remember this, as well. They said you could only update them within 1 week after your interview. Then it’s cutoff.

Anybody got interview invitation for January 6-10, 2020 and January 13-17, 2020 yet ?

Haven't seen anyone post about it yet, hope not though because I am really hoping for an OOS II 🙂 . Based on previous invites I would expect IIs to go out for the former this Friday or next Monday, and for the latter right before Christmas.
