Submitted on 7/16 and file was indicated complete on 7/23. Someone previously on this thread mentioned it took them nearly a month to get the complete notification. I also didn't get an email for it, portal just says it

Hi everyone. Is it worth applying here with a 3.9/523? ECs are okay, but cookie-cutter.
Only if you are in-state
Edit: They do consider high-stat applicants from out of state (like yourself) but I would imagine it's a bit harder to get into. Looked at your post history and I'm not sure. If you really love Oregon, then I guess it's worth a shot.

Is anyone else having an insane number of problems with the application portal? I'm was trying to fill out my activities but I get logged out every 5 minutes, stuff won't save, and now I can't even access the portal. On chrome I get a crazy string of numbers on a white blank page and on firefox I get the message "A task has run for longer than it should and has caused the server to terminate " with no other info

Yeah, it's happened to all of us. The best thing to do is to save your work frequently or use a word processor for the essays. I used google chrome for all my secondaries and avoided lots of lost work! 🙂

Oof, I imagine the collective frustration is high. I did all my essays in google docs but trying to fill out the 100 character activities section alone has been enough to give me a migraine. Now I can't access the portal at all, so I'll have to call and see what's up

You guys. This portal is so freaking frustrating! It logs me out every 30 seconds whenever I try to input my essays. UGH :bang:

I am going to go out on a limb here - we only have 3 MD schools here in the PNW and I am considering applying to OHSU as well.

Looking at their mission based groups, they have the ‘superior achievements’ group and I think that would be my only in.

I have a cGPA of 3.65 with 2 years of 3.98, sGPA of 3.97, MCAT 521, military experience (lots of leadership in there + 4 years as veteran mental health advocate), 5 years FTE as a medical laboratory technician and/or phlebotomist, like 700 hours of research with 3 posters (2 national conferences).

Do y’all think that meets their definitions for ‘superior’ or do you think it is not worthwhile?

If you would want to go to OHSU, id go for it! Probably worth the 140 dollars rather than wondering what if...especially if you wanna live in Oregon.

I loved living in Oregon previously, granted it was Wallowa county lol And after submitting 19 other secondaries...$140 is a lot for the potential of not even having a chance...anyone with insider info...?

No insider info here, but I say go for it. I thought I had no chance at Baylor based on their OOS acceptance rate and stats. I think being from a neighboring state will help you a lot and so will your military experience.

I think it would be worth it, honestly. They love non-trads.

I don't know if this is considered inside information, but here's my situation. I'm from Vancouver, so I've spent a lot of time in Portland growing up. In some ways, I feel more Oregonian than Washingtonian. My mom works at the VA hospital in Portland as an accountant. One of her co-workers is married to someone high up in OHSU's admissions department, and she offered to take any questions I had about the school. I told her my situation and she sincerely recommended that I apply. She said that OHSU is pretty strict on accepting only residents or those in mission-based groups, but she also said that they do read the secondaries thoroughly and will take extenuating circumstances into consideration. She made it seem like it was definitely worth my money to apply if you're a stones-throw away from being in a mission-based group.

That being said, without any significant connections, it takes a very competitive OOS applicant to get in, just based on what I've seen in past years here on sdn. But you are for sure a very competitive applicant, so I wouldn't put it past you. Hope that helps!

Is it worth to complete a secondary from here if I am from Cali? How friendly are they to OOS, especially Cali? 3.72/516 stats

From my understanding, they are not particularly receptive of OOS compared to some other schools, but if you've got a strong application (outside of just stats) and a good reason for applying you've got a shot. They are not nearly as strict on OOS applicants as schools like the University of Washington (in this case out-of-WWAMI).

Anyone know how exactly they treat this mission-based group for MD/MPH? Does applying it confer any advantages rather than applying just MD, considering some experience with public health?

EDIT: I got a reply from their admissions office—they only consider MPH applicants after admission to the MD program, the MPH side is handled thru PSU.

Does this mean MD/MPH applicants are also separately considered for MD admittance?

No, I think what they're saying is that all applicants are considered for MD admittance first, and only after that is their request for MPH/PhD is considered. OHSU likes to do things the slow way.

I see, so if I apply to MD/MPH there is a chance I could be accepted to regular MD but not MD/MPH?

I think so. If you really want to know, you should call them. I have called them with similar types of app questions and they're great.

Given OHSU's tendency to hold many of its spots open until the early spring, does OHSU look unfavorably on applicants who complete their primary late in the cycle? (Sorry if I've posted this question in the wrong spot!)

For example, let's say an Oregon resident were to submit their AMCAS in the next week (including letters, transcripts etc.) for verification and pre-write secondaries to ensure a quick turn around once secondaries are received (hopefully in September?)... all else being equal, would that particular Oregon resident just be better off just waiting for the next cycle?

And yes... I recognize that submitting this late in the cycle is generally cautioned against (because... red flags and rolling admissions) but I appreciate any insight folk might have as it relates to OHSU.

Good luck to everyone this cycle!

I can only speak to my own experience, but I submitted my AMCAS late July and my secondaries mid-September, and was lucky enough to get in last cycle. If you feel good about your application (timeline aside), I think it’s worth applying

Is there a current OHSU student willing to answer a few questions for me? Mostly regarding my application and how I can improve it for the next cycle in the case I need to reapply?

Just submitted finally. Today was extra worse for the timing out problem, I couldn't even review my essays on the portal because it would time out after less than 60 seconds. My only advice would be to copy your text NO MATTER WHAT before hitting save. I had the same issue you did, but luckily only lost a few sentences of text.
This server timeout issue is driving me insane. Literally nothing I do is letting me log back into the portal, it just displays the page that says "A task has run for longer than it should and has caused the server to terminate it. Please try again or contact the administrator." WTF??
Edit: Switched browsers and it worked 🙂

I did log into the portal today (I'm already complete) and it said that there were some technical problems with the payment processing...maybe that has something to do with it?

Did you get a complete email? I just submitted (woo!) but haven't gotten an email.

I don't think I did (I was complete 7/22 so it's been awhile). I think the only email I got for them was when they sent my secondary. The portal will update saying you are complete on x/xx day.

Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about the experience - much appreciated.

Submitted on 7/17 but still not marked complete on the portal. Is it worth sending them an email or should I wait it out?

I noticed OHSU asks you to list you MAJOR activities and experiences. Should we only list the activities that are of MME caliber?

I just remembered something that might be of interest to anyone who interviews here.

I'm not gonna say how I know this, but I know for a fact that last year interviewees actually spent maybe 30-45 minutes rounding with the general medicine teams during their rounds. It was just part of interview day. It was like shadowing. Not sure if some interviewees went with general med and others went to some other dept or specialty....but be prepared for that.

I interviewed last year and this did not happen.

I called the office on Friday and left a voicemail. Just got the following response via email:

"Thank you for your continued patience.

We have not yet processed your file, but we have received your payment and secondary application in our system.

We are processing a very large volume of applications, and priority is given to our mission-based applicants.

Also, none of our process is automated, and we are a tiny team of only so many human beings.

We will get to your file, and at that time, you will see an update on the portal with an indication of letters received.

Thank you,
-MD Admissions"

Ya everyone, I know someone who matriculated last year on her second cycle.

She submitted July wasn't complete until mid-late August and didn't hear back about an II until December. She was ISS and had good stats. August for most schools is OHSU's November. Don't trip. I just got my first decision this morning (R, lol) and that was for Tulane, one of the faster schools. OHSU is slow but (hopefully) they really value our essays, and don't just look at your two numbers.

GL everyone, especially my fellow Oregonians 😉

II about 20 minutes ago! IS, complete 7/30

For anyone that got an II so far what did your portal status look like. Mine says "An email was sent to you with an interview deadline of ..." but I did not receive an email and I checked my spam. Should I contact them?
