Guys, today might be the day for some of us.

Going to bed last night, I felt the same sense of nervous anticipation as a kid on Christmas eve. But also the dread of a prisoner on the night before his execution.

Melodramatic? Definitely. But its fair to say that this app cycle, combined with a global pandemic, has done a number on my sanity lol.

I interviewed 2/27, but my status on the portal is completely blank. I'm scrolling up and down the page, nothing next to my status. No hold or rejection. Are other people experiencing the same thing? It's my first year applying to ohsu, so I don't know what I am supposed to be seeing on the portal.

I made an account just to post this because I'm so anxious something might be wrong and I need reassurance lol.

For me it says "Decision: Hold 1/21/2020" like three lines below the header where it says "Application Status". If it doesn't say you're on hold it could just be that they discussed you late enough in the game that they no longer saw the point in updating your status to hold? Since you'll get your decision within their 12 week window or whatever. I'm not totally sure!

This is too accurate

Ugh, I want them to put me out of my misery if they have already decided to rejected me so I can go through all the stages of grief before the next cycle opens.

Mine is same thing and I interviewed in March

I am wondering whether the school has already sent out all the acceptances? That said, they are just waiting to release the rejections and waitlist ranks? I hope I am wrong. :xf:

Will OHSU also send out financial aid/scholarship information at the same time that they offer acceptances at the end of this month?

from what I remember from the previous threads it looks like it takes a few weeks for them to send out the financial aid information, but the scholarship information comes with the formal acceptance?

If that’s true, this is actually insane. I realize not all students have multiple offers at this point, but for those that do, is OHSU seriously expecting them to release all their other acceptances on April 30 prior to knowing their actual COA for OHSU? And if this is actually what happens, how on earth is this not against AAMC policies?

Yeah you're totally right, I haven't thought that far since I haven't been accepted yet. I'm sure there are more posts related to financial aid but there's this one from last year. It sounds like if you haven't received a scholarship yet it will be all loans unless you get an institutional scholarship later on in the summer which is only ~1-4k.

I may be wrong, but I think you can accept your offers and yet not lose your OHSU wait list spot. Someone else please confirm. Of course, in the meantime, costly deposits for other choices are happening.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you need to release your acceptances by April 30th. On April 30th the "commit to enroll" option becomes available on AMCAS but by no means are you obligated to commit by April 30th. I know that OHSU will get back to everyone with a decision- whether it be accept, reject, or wait list by April 30th. I believe the Commit to enroll deadline for OHSU is July 20th (21 days prior to orientation). So you don't have to release your other acceptances until July 20th. I looked this all up, but if I am completely wrong can someone please comment?

Side note, on April 30th the curtain will be pulled back and medical schools will have the ability see where applicants have been accepted and where they have "planned to enroll". Allegedly, if you have planned to enroll somewhere else that should not deter medical schools from offering you a position at their institution.

I am by no means an expert so someone please correct me if I am completely off. Otherwise, good luck everyone!

/uj no more memes for a sec for a hot take

IMO it really is fairly arrogant of them. The school I'm slated to enroll at now since OHSU has been leaving me on read for over half a year now has already released their financial aid info, had their second look, accepted dual-degree applications, has been incredibly transparent since interview day, and really prefers us to CTE soon. If I don't hear about an A by April 30 I'm dropping my spot at OHSU and just CTE'ing elsewhere since I need to sign for housing while the market is still good, figure out moving logistics, and get all of the other financial stuff taken care of ASAP before August. I know several people in the last couple cycles who ended up having to do the same, and while this is OHSU's game, it's frankly disrespectful to applicants with or without other acceptances. It's like getting strung along by someone you're initially really into and then getting a "u up?" text months later when you've more or less moved on. I don't want to go as far as to say it's ~unfair~ since the application cycle is a crapshoot anyways, but it really is inconsiderate. The way many applicants get the finger for much longer than other schools has really dissuaded me especially over the last several months, and my family and most attendings I've spoken with have pretty much all told me to just go somewhere else.

It is genuinely weird that they release all the decisions at the last possible day of the cycle?? Is there really no way you can’t let some students know first? I can’t wrap my mind around the logic of having someone interview in October vs March and giving them both a decision April 30th.

Wait are they confirmed to release it on April 30th? Not before then?

Most (all?) programs require you to drop all but one acceptance by the 30th of this month. The three schools that I’m still considering all prohibit applicants from holding multiple acc after that date, but others may be different.

This. I’ve been pretty frustrated with this school’s administration over the past 8 months and am so turned off by their admissions practices after quite a few negative experiences throughout the process. (Anyone else have to roll a suitcase around with them throughout their interview day? I clocked over 10k steps with two pieces of luggage while wearing heels b/c they didn’t warn applicants in advance about lack of storage.)

I honestly don’t know how many acceptances they’ll offer at the end of this month, especially since AAMC specifies that they have to offer as many acceptances as they have seats in the class by mid-March, but if it’s true that they’ll release a good number soon, then their annual timeline is completely unacceptable (no pun intended). I second what @neuroticpetzl said about having experienced far more transparent communication from other schools, which IMO is a basic dignity that all applicants deserve. OHSU could stand to make significant improvements in this regard.

Disclaimer: The students and faculty that I met here were incredible, and I am not in any way trying to disparage them but rather say that it seems like the administration exploits the vulnerability of its applicants and neglects to communicate with them in an appropriate timeframe. My concern is that an administration that doesn’t care about an applicant’s experience may not care about their students’ well-being, either.

Edit: corrected info about the April 30th deadline

This was sent to me by the current MD school I am accepted at:

April 30, 2020 you are required to participate in the “Choose Your Medical School” Program. At this point, you can hold only one acceptance and have two options – “Plan to Enroll” or “Commit to Enroll”. You can remain on waitlists at other medical schools, but must inform the College of Medicine in writing via e-mail if you receive another offer within 24 hours indicating the name of the school and the amount of time you have to respond to the acceptance.”

If you’re one of the lucky ones who has multiple acceptances- yes, you have to limit the acceptance to one school, but you are allowed to remain on other waitlists - as waitlists are not the same as acceptances or“holding a seat” in a medical school class. You are correct that you do not need to commit to enroll yet at any of your schools - but you cannot have multiple acceptances. You would have to “release” your acceptances so that you only hold one MD class seat on April 30th. You’re still allowed to jump ship if you get a better offer from a waitlist etc.

Also this is across the board - these deadlines apply to all MD applicants and are not school specific.
The email ended with “The AMCAS traffic rules are strictly enforced”

I experienced this too! I was surprised that they expected me to drag a suitcase around all day, especially considering how spread out their campus is. Luckily my student host was on campus and she helped me find a barely used room to store my suitcase in for the day. That seemed so strange to me. No one can watch my stuff for a few hours? For all of my other interviews there were people who put applicants luggage in a secure place. For one of my interviews in particular, the school hired security to watch our stuff all day. So weird they didn’t have something prepared for this. Applicants bringing luggage is pretty normal.

Maybe I’m being overly critical, but the luggage thing felt like the cherry on top to a messy and disorganized interview day. No signs showing applicants where we should meet. Video explaining the curriculum was strange. We were stuck in this little side room for the first part of the day. Itinerary was vague. Some faculty and staff members seemed like they were just riffing off the top of their heads without a power point and giving superficial info. No one was observing applicants in the hallway during the MMI. Interviews scattered throughout the campus. None of these things are a huge deal on their own, but added all together it felt messy. I hope that isn’t a glimpse into what it would be like to be a student there. If I get accepted, I’m going to be asking current students lots of questions.

Do we think they're still making decisions right now? Or what could they be doing this last minute? I think I'd feel better if I felt like there was a good reason we haven't heard yet!

Absolutely agree with your sentiment. But yeah, simply put no one here could really tell you anything concrete.

The only absolute certainty is that final decisions will be made this Thursday. We've already waited this long, a few more (anxious) days wont kill us 🙂

I'm a little confused about the process- if we have an acceptance, isn't the deadline to plan to enroll on the 30th? So if they respond to us on the 30th, how can we change our decision? Unless the deadline is by the end of the day on the 30th?

Last year the only decisions that came out on the 30th (according to SDN) were rejections. The 29th was waitlist positions and the 26th was acceptances. Maybe tomorrow will be acceptances for us? And then people with more than one acceptance have one day to decide before the 30th.
