2019-2020 Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I stayed with a host while I was in Bethesda for my interview and he wasn’t offered an acceptance until end of April-ish.
Damn...I'm honest to god hoping I hear back much sooner than that. I don't want to go on any other interviews since this is my top school. Will keep the forum updated but I can feel it in my bones that I'll hear back this month.

Same. I really felt more of a ‘right fit’ at my USUHS interview more than any other school. Granted I’m military, but even just the environment and people were so amazing. I had to push back an early interview until November which is killin me right now since it sounds like the Army is already filled and I still haven’t heard! But I’m gonna keep praying I hear back soon

Has anyone received a medical waiver yet? Accepted in October, sent the CC a request for a medical waiver but have still yet to hear

How do you know your security is complete? Medical you can look up, is there something to look up on security as well to know complete?
I just called the security office and they said I was good for the next step. It was very informal though - nothing in writing.

Have they taken anyone off interview hold? When I first received the email in September, the wording seemed like they were very interested in my application. However, still haven't heard back. Complete 8/1

Rejected today via mail... doesn't quite feel real yet. I'm currently active duty and I built my app around this school in particular, and it seemed like I got along with my interviewers but I guess it's totally possible I misread them. Best of luck to everyone else.

Very sorry to hear that. Wish you the best of luck moving forward and hope you still choose to pursue medicine.

Really sorry about that friend. I’m active duty also, =/> 90th percentile all their stats, and haven’t even gotten an II from them. Wondering what they’re looking for, who knows.

Praying you hear something soon. Our school is not super stats driven honestly. They care that you’ve shown you will succeed in med school, but after that it becomes about fit from what I’ve seen if the people in my class.

One of my best friends didn’t get accepted until the end of May. A couple people got in literally right before orientation. Until you get the R, it’s not over.

Well I'm gonna go do something more productive than spam refresh on this page. Happy Holidays everyone, next year will be our year 🙂

Getting accepted to medical school in 2020 has a nicer ring to it anyway, when I tell my kids grand kids about my awesome career at USUHS and beyond!

I got in June 7th. Everyone who is wondering when they will get the call, I was you. I wrote a LOI around late April/early May and it probably helped, but certainly didn't hurt. It helps to have substance to the LOI, ie I was accepted somewhere else and was willing to drop it to come here. Keep your faith, trust the process. Best of luck to everyone.

II on Friday, complete end of July (ORM LM 75, no prior service). SO STOKED. Uhm, what's the deal with army "filling up"? If I put army as my #1, would that hurt my competitiveness/chances of acceptance? Also, apart from my own googling, is there somewhere I can find more in-depth information about the branches?

At this point, it's likely that the entire class has filled, which means all the branches are technically "filled up." However, that does not mean that you cannot get accepted. Essentially, after your interview your application will be reviewed by the committee. You could essentially have a few things happen:

1. you get straight up accepted and offered a seat in the class.
2. you get accepted, but you are put on the priority waitlist to wait for a seat to open when people start withdrawing or getting DQed en masse. The withdraws really start happening after April 30, but they can happen in March too when Harvard releases its decisions.
3. you get put on the alternate list, which means you didn't get rejected, but you'll have to wait until everyone from the priority waitlist is offered a seat before they get to you
4. you get rejected

So even though the class is probably "full" at this point (I don't know if it is, officially, but it usually is before now, so I'm guessing it is), you can still get accepted. It is hard to tell whether putting Army will make it less likely for you to get in if you end up in number 2 or 3. Last year, all 3 branches went into their alternate lists. The Army has the most spots, so if you end up on the alternate list that means they have to go through more people to get to you.

But honestly, I wouldn't pick a branch based on that. List them the way you actually prefer them. The military can be difficult enough without being in a branch you really don't like.

As for learning more about them, you could always request the host program and ask to be placed with an Army student. If you have Navy questions, I can help you there.

Jan 30! The invite email is interesting...

It says:
You need to submit security paperwork even if you already hold a security clearance.

Yet, the security letter itself says:
If have a secret clearance or have been processed for a security clearance bring verification with you when you report for your interview. The letter should contain the following information: • SSN • Level of clearance, and date granted. • Type of investigation, and date investigation completed. • Agency that conducted investigation. • Name and telephone number of command security officer.

Which certainly makes much more sense...

Should I give the security office a call?

Yeah you don’t have to submit it. They did the same thing last year. What will happen is you’ll get to your interview and they’ll read a list of names that don’t have to go to security. If you want to be sure, you can call the security office and make sure they have your security clearance info.

Awesome! Thanks a lot

Does anyone know how long it takes to get an unconditional acceptance?

I’m medically qualified, but I was wondering if I will need to meet with a security officer and go through another clearance process. Did anyone get an unconditional without meeting with a security officer?

You can call the security office to check on the status of your clearance. Once you are good with both, it doesn’t take long. I didn’t meet with security, but I already had a clearance.

Interviewed 10/24, accepted 11/15, and medically Qualified sometime in the last week of November. I just received my unconditional offer yesterday.

With respect to your security clearance, after speaking with security a while back all they do with our initial SF86 is a pre-screen. They don’t actually go through obtaining the clearance just yet; rather, they pre-screen to ensure that you likely won’t have any issues obtaining one when they actually have us go through obtaining our clearance. I was told that for those who don’t already have a clearance we will hear from security in the next few months to fill out the same paperwork in a more official manner.

I hope that was informative.

Did you recieve your offer in the mail? Or phone?

For people who have been accepted do you get something by email also or just letter in the mail?

Did any air force people get something like this? Trying to figure out if it is a usuhs thing or like spam

Congrats to all of you who have been accepted so far and good luck to those who are still waiting/interviewing! I interviewed 10/17 and was accepted early November (yay!) for the Army. I sent back my paperwork for the conditional acceptance before Thanksgiving but haven't heard anything yet about an unconditional acceptance... I'm cleared medically though! Ms. Ferrell told me that they got a new commissioning coordinator which may be why it is taking longer than I expected to receive it.

Assuming I receive the unconditional acceptance soonish, are there any current students on here who given an overview of the timeline/process leading up to when we start officer training and classes? I'd love to do some traveling prior to starting everything and don't want to make plans that might interfere with that stuff!

Oh, and happy New Year!

How are the amenities and/or perks of being a student at USUHS? Gym proximity, cafeteria, transportation (free metro/buses), etc.? Are there funding opportunities to do research at Walter Reed, NIH, etc.? I've been combing through the school's website + earlier posts here, but couldn't find anything recent.

P.S. - Happy New Year everyone!

Timeline is different depending on the branch, but all of us go to our summer officer trainings in...wait for it...the summer lol. The Air Force goes later than the other branches. The Army I believe goes for basically the whole month of June. I can ask someone on Thursday when we go back to school. Orientation for USUHS starts August 1.

Gym: there is a tiny gym in the school in the basement near the anatomy lab. It has some free weights I think, and a bunch of treadmills, bikes, etc. It is very small and really only good if you want to get some cardio in. There is a much larger gym on base that is about a 5-6 minute walk along the trail through the woods that has a weight room, a track, a pool, etc. It's free for all active duty, dependents, etc., so we can use it whenever. We also do our PRT there if you are doing alternate cardio (mostly a Navy thing).

Cafeteria: big cafeteria on campus, little coffee shop as well. Walter Reed has a couple of cafeterias in it, including the main one which is actually pretty damn good. The USU one has some good stuff too, especially on Tuesdays (power bowl!). But honestly, I just bring my lunch because it's cheaper and healthier.

Transport: there is a metro stop directly across the street from the main gate. The DoD will pay for a metro card or you can apply for a parking permit. You cannot have both. I have a metro card, and getting it reloaded each much is super easy. There is a shuttle that goes directly from USU to the train stop, which is really nice when it's raining or super cold.

Research: the great thing about going here is you can pretty much do research with anyone. I am currently involved in a project with a faculty member on campus, and I am also going to be doing some work with someone at the NIH. All you have to do is show up to some interest group meetings, and the connections are easy to make.

Received a wait list letter today.

I Interviewed 11/14 and had Navy as my top choice. Still waiting on my medical to clear DODMETS. It says I’m “complete and on hold”. Some sort of miscommunication with the clinic I went to. Fingers crossed and happy to be in the running still!

Congrats on the waitlist! If I may ask, is this the “priority” waitlist, or the “alternate” list? Thanks so much - happy new year!

Thanks and a happy new year! It’s a waitlist placement. The letter differentiates between waitlist and the alternate list and refers to the post-interview packet that they gave us.

Woohoo! I think you’re in, I believe they’ve gone through all WL spots in years past. I interviewed 11/14, listed AF as first pref. Still waiting to hear back [emoji32]

Been on the interview waitlist since september and haven't heard back. What are my chances of getting pulled off for an interview?

Anyone else who interviewed on 11/14 not heard anything yet?

You said that you put Airforce down right? Do you know if AF is full as of right now? If it is, you should be expecting something in the snail mail I'd think
I have no idea whether AF is full, but I was thinking the same thing - anyone on this thread know if AF is full?

I don’t know for sure, but last year the class was full in October. So I’m guessing it probably is. But as was discussed above that doesn’t mean you can’t get in. Even when the class is full you can get a full acceptance, and a priority waitlist is very likely an acceptance as well.

Has anyone heard back about a medical waiver yet?
