Thanks for sharing! Were there any character/word limits?

For the counties we have lived in (if in state), you need a description. I am just putting a straightforward description, i.e. "I was born in and grew up in county X." Is that what we are all doing?

How are OOS supposed to reply to - which county you have lived in ?

That's what I'm planning on doing, I don't think they're looking for anything too specific.

It says to skip the question for anyone who has never lived in Michigan!

For those who have graduated already and need to fill this out:

Describe what activities you have engaged in since degree completion

How much in depth would you say we should describe the activities?
I worked as an EMT and volunteered for food banks and blood drives. I feel like its pretty self-explanatory

I only wrote a paragraph. All the details are in the activities section of the primary

Has the portal fixed for you yet?

Still not working....this is very frustrating, I’ve tried every work around for uploading an image that I can but it seems like a problem on their end.

I am working on the optional COVID essay and my response is nowhere close to the 1000 word limit, do y’all think this is okay? I was pretty concise and got everything across I believe.

I think they’d rather it be concise than fill it with a bunch of fluff because they don’t want to waste time reading fluff

FInally worked for me. Submitted 7/13. Everything is complete but app still says incomplete. I assume that changes in a few days

Same here. I am sure they're waiting on Casper who knows. We shall see.

Yeah I think that's fine. How did you talk about "overcoming" COVID obstacles? I was planning on writing how COVID affected me (laid off, volunteering suspended) but I haven't really been able to overcome them since I haven't been able to find a new job due to the hiring freezes in my area.

I had the same stuff happen, i just talked about the other stuff i’m doing to help my family etc.

If any current students are lurking..

1. Can you expound a bit on the preclinical curriculum? What is the typical weekly schedule like? What is the division between PBL & lecture? How many mandatory sessions / hours are there per week?

2. Any thoughts on the facilities for the school (preclinical) or affiliated hospitals?

3. How is Mt. Pleasant? What are some misconceptions about it? What are some of the negative aspects about it? How do you deal with the rurality?

4. What is research like there? More clinical or basic emphasized? Competitive?

Still waiting for app to be verified, can someone confirm the word lengths for the prompts? A poster above said 1000, 500 and 500 words but that seems to be incorrect. Thanks

Those are correct, they are 1000, 500, and 500 words!

Does this secondary allow for an optional text box for IAs or allow for updates after submission? To make a long story short, I have pre-written all my secondaries but still waiting for my primary to be reviewed (hopefully in a few more days!), but when I submitted my primary I indicated I had no IAs because what I thought were not violations actually were. After talking to a few admissions departments I have learned my best bet is to 1)email the admissions office and dean of admissions, 2) explain in the optional text box why I did not report it on my primary, and 3)update my application with the details if allowed.

Therefore, does this secondary have an optional text box or allow for resubmission where I would have the opportunity to explain this situation?

You can just email admissions with your update! I did the same 🙂

Anyone still having the application say that it is incomplete even after everything is received? The only remaining info they need from me is CASPer (I just sent it ) and it is not even required by CMU.

What did you all talk about for the "Why CMU" prompt (I am referring to the first essay)? I like the location and the school will get me where I wanna go. I can't see anything that sets their curriculum apart from other medical schools and I don't see any options for pathways.

look at their mission statement - how does this relate to your values and your experiences that demonstrate this
look at opportunities/programs for students - do you have a passion for research or community outreach? research some of theirs and tie it back to previous related experiences in your life
you have to sell why the school is a good fit for you but also why you are a good fit for it

hope that helps

Thank you. I was able to write a decent essay last night. Well, I think it is pretty decent. I talked about my activism and experience caring for people with disabilities, which is considered an underserved population. I also talked about the longitudinal courses offered at CMU and how their values of teaching towards the societal and cultural context in healthcare aligns with my values

hold up this was not on the secondary I submitted

For the "why us" prompt, I've finished my essay and I'm nowhere near 1000 words. Is this a big deal? I'm currently sitting at just over 300 words and I've talked about how I relate to their mission statement, what I like about their curriculum, COVID, and resources I plan to use. Is this okay or should I try to find a few more things to discuss?

You're good with that, I think people were saying to keep it concise

Well mine is closer to 1000 so I failed to keep it concise, lol. I wrote one essay for why us and another going over my background. I labeled each as such
Oh yeah no funny enough I did the exact same thing you did; I just checked the past threads where people were saying to keep it concise but realized I was too late cause I had already submitted it lol

Honestly, the first question was three questions in one. To ensure I answered them all, I treated them as individual questions which is closer to 300 words each
1. Why CMU
2. How did COVID-19 affect your motivation
3. Your background/fit

To be more clear, I combined the first two into one answer and the second as its own
