2020-2021 Colorado

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you scroll up, they've only interviewed about half as many as they interviewed last year so, I think it's safe to assume, there's a lot more love to go around, this cycle is undoubtedly delayed more than any other as schools adjust. Very few have kept the same pace imo. So trying to calm my neuroticism and angst with that

Thank you! It’s just getting harder and harder to remain hopeful...

Did y'all send thank you notes? I'm thinking about doing one for my individual interview since that was pretty chatty, but for the group exercise and interview they were just in the background other than asking the prompts so I feel like there's not a lot to thank them for lol (other than their time).
I personally sent a thank you note to everyone who interviewed me (individual, group exercise, and group activity), Lamar (there were some technical issues during my interview and he helped me a ton!), and Dr. SooHoo. I really think it's up to you because it seems like applicants did a variety of things, but I don't think it hurts to send more!

Are there any current CUSOM students here willing to answer some questions? I’ve been fortunate enough to get that A and would love to learn more about the school!
Hey! Yeah I'm a current student and I'd be happy to answer any questions, just PM me. We're also gonna set up the FB page today or tomorrow so look out for that too so any other accepted students can ask questions and chat with current students!

Congrats on the A. If you don't mind answering when was your interview date and how long did it take to get a decision?

Thank you! Don’t mind at all, interviewed on 10/23 and received the acceptance call on 11/6

How soon after the call did you get the email confirmation? I feel like i need this in writing to be real lol

Not the parent commenter, but I received the email about 3-4 business days after the call I think. Congrats again to everybody who heard back today.

Totally agree! It felt unreal until the email, haha!

Funny you should say this, as I felt the same way. I received the call on Friday but did not receive the official portal update until Monday. On Sunday night, I woke up to a nightmare that I had imagined the acceptance phone call! This is what the medical school cycle does to us!

My sincere congratulations!

Does anyone have information about what type of scholarships UC offers to OOS students? I read somewhere in this thread that is only 6k max, is that true?

From what I've gathered from asking a couple of students and from prior threads - It is 1-10k mas for OOS, with most of them being 1-5k for MS1's.

I tried speaking with Ms. Deedee in financial aid before, too, but she didn't give many specifics, and she implied that they encourage OOS students to seek private scholarships because of their limited scholarship availability. All in all, enough to make a grown man cry.

I did talk with an OOS MS4 (resident now) a while ago and he mentioned that they gave him a significant scholarship that helped him choose CU over other options. I wonder if things have changed now because 1-5k does nothing to that 95k OOS COA.

Yeah...Not to mention I’m sure we’ve all learned to live frugally from college and all that, but I think that would still not do much to alleviate that COA...

I may be wrong, but I believe on last year's CUSOM thread, an OOS matriculant claimed they were rewarded in-state tuition via a scholarship. Though, most matriculants said that they were awarded 0-6k in aid.

MS1 here.. there are CUSOM scholarships for which you can apply with two separate prompts/applications. I believe these were Leadership and Diversity and Inclusion. The amounts awarded were variable and I’m not sure how many students were awarded. I do know students who are on full ride scholarships, and my scholarship was in the range of 20-30k as an OOS student, bringing my total in line with that of in state. I’m not sure the specifics of the application timeline or if there have been any funding changes (best to direct those questions to Lamar (admissions) or Deedee (financial aid)) but hopefully this provides at least a little peace of mind.

Is your scholarship based on one of those 2 you mention (Leadership & Diversity, and Inclusion)? Do you know if any of your classmates have had their tuition matched if you demonstrate another program's aid as leverage?

Thank you for this information! I will look out for these separate applications!

Yup! It was awarded for Leadership. From what I can recall, the announcements for the scholarship applications went out in February and were announced by the Office of Student Life via e-mail. They had routed the applications through this site, though I don't think you'd be able to find them at this point in time (likely they open after all admission acceptances have been given out): Scholarships

I heard back with the scholarship award decision around Second Look Day in early April. Second Look will also be a great time to ask more specifics about financing and scholarship opportunities.

I don't personally know of tuition matches having occurred but it can always be a part of the conversation when accepting aid.

Whoo buddy, got the post-II R. It was a good effort. Good luck everyone else!!!!
I'm so sorry 🙁 if you don't mind me asking, how did you think your interview went?

Absolutely, I don’t mind. I thought I did really well on the two group activities but the faculty interview was kind of lukewarm. I think that didn’t do me any favors.

MS4 here happy to answers questions too, just PM me
Likewise, MS3 in the midst of clinical rotations. Just a head's up, your curriculum will look different than mine did, but have been peripherally involved in curriculum reform. Am probably best suited to talk about the "soft" aspects of the school (which are arguably some of the most important).

Also am happy to discuss med school in general, whether you decide to go to CU or not. I've thrived here so far and am not the most confident person, so wasn't sure when I started med school that that was going to be possible. Would love to be a support to someone who may feel similarly.

I felt similar. It honestly felt like the two group ones were great, but the faculty interview felt much much colder than any of my other interviews. I don't know if I was just awkward, or if it was on purpose, but I felt the same way. I got the same Rejection today, so who knows haha

Canadian applicant here! Anybody know how common it is for Canadian/international students to be accepted to CUSOM?

Can anyone share how the group activity worked over Zoom? How is it different from the group interview?

Can’t share details but it’s something that you do with the other people in your group, you have to work together as a team, vs the group interview which is just a plain group interview

So anyone that's gotten an A, do I have to send in my deposit to hear back about their financial aid offer? Has anyone done that yet? I was holding off on a deposit but I do want to see what my aid would look like, or do I just have to wait.

A current student previously said in the thread that they didn’t get their scholarship/financial aid offer until around April, so we may just have to wait for a while

For those who already interviews here, is Colorado still using the MMI/hybrid format with virtual interviews?

For anybody asking about how the interview day works, Dr. Zehnder (the former admissions dean of CU) did a half-hour interview with @LindaAccepted that you should check out on Youtube. Provided is information about not only the interview day but also about the school in general. Watching it definitely gave me a good idea of what to expect on interview day, even with the transition to a virtual format.

Do you mind linking the video? I can't seem to find it

The format is a group activity, group interview (3 interviewees, 2 interviewers), and a solo interview (you and 2 interviewers). 🙂
