Hi there! I'm currently a student at FIU HWCOM. From my understanding, it is very challenging to establish residency in a state and have it apply to tuition (no matter what state/medical school it is). Double check with financial aid, but I'm 97% sure that once you are accepted as OOS, you are always considered OOS for tuition purposes, even if you purchase property.

Hi! I realize you asked this a while ago, but wanted to respond as a current M2. My first year, I lived in Kendall and it was safe but a bit of a drive from campus - traffic gets very heavy. I currently live in Doral and highly recommend it - I think most students live in Doral for the first two years, and then people move out to Brickell and elsewhere. Hope that helps 🙂

Kendall is nice and safe but the traffic can be killer. You can avoid this by staying on campus to study until post-rush (like 7:00 pm lol). Otherwise, I recommend Doral 🙂

I wanted to clear this up a bit. I'm a current student at FIU HWCOM and think that this is an important issue to address. Disclaimer that all of this is my understanding and it is possible that there are some intricacies that I am unaware of.

First, FIU HWCOM has transitioned to a Pass/Fail grading system (rather than numerical grades, which my class has) so I'm not sure how this will be affected in the future. The policy is that the pass line is a 75. If you get below a 75 in a class overall (a failure), you are given the opportunity to take a remediation exam and if you pass, you pass. I don't know anyone who has failed a remediation exam and honestly I am not sure what happens in that event. If you fail an additional class, you are then on academic probation. You will see a committee and discuss best next steps for you. In some cases, that can mean repeating the year, I think depending on general performance in other classes, student preference, etc. This is rare, but it does happen. However, I believe this happens at many medical schools and is just not discussed.

Take that as you will! I still love FIU and if I could go back, I would choose it again.
 
Does FIU do hard pre-II rejections or do they remain silent until the end of the cycle?

Does anyone know what the post-II acceptance is specifically for OOS applicants?

On MSAR, it shows that last year 169 OOS applicants were interviewed and only 23 were accepted. That is about a 13% post-II acceptance rate based on MSAR and it's a bit discouraging looking at that. Am I looking at that right or am I missing something?

That 23 is the number of students who matriculated. Usually, the number of students accepted can be estimated by multiplying that number by 2.5-3.

This Google sheet will give you the data set from the 2019-2020 cycle, and it shows FIU has a 51.48% OOS post-II acceptance rate. 🙂
 
What’s the latest month people have scheduled interviews so far? Trying to see how many more interviews FIU might be offering based on how far along they are on filling dates

For everyone getting worried about not receiving an interview yet, I was complete in August and didn't get my interview until February. I was accepted and attend FIU now 🙂 The admissions cycle is a marathon, hold tight.

But don't they send out all the interview invites now, just schedule them for February?
