2020-2021 Meharry

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone, I just wanted to give my perspective on Meharry's communication so far this application cycle. I know for a fact that one of the admissions directors is also running a COVID testing site in Nashville you can find an interview on youtube where he talks about it. If Nashville is anything like Los Angeles right now there is a crazy surge of cases and deaths.

What I am trying to say is that most people rn are filling multiple roles and trying their best to juggle admissions and the pandemics which is hitting communities of color the hardest. Lets be patients and good things are sure to come our way.

I definitely appreciate this and I've considered it but Meharry didnt start this poor communication after Covid and I think they should start being more responsible and professional. I believe in black excellence and I believe Meharry is that under the surface but they've gotta be that in these obvious areas too. Black run organizations already have a bad rep you know. We have to do 10 times more to be recognized as equal. I say this not to shame the organization but because I LOVE black anything lol and I want it to thrive and really be the best it can. This is a problem that has existed for several years and they still haven't fixed that and I think as an institution they should always be trying to improve.

But to praise them, I couldn't be more proud of how involved they are in this pandemic and their community involvement is one if the biggest things I love about the school so I have mad respect for that.

No not yet I interview 12/8 and still haven’t heard back since then. Hopefully they update us soon.
Make sure to keep checking your applicant portal. Some earlier comments said they actually had acceptances in there and had no clue!

To those who have had interviews, any tips? Advice? What types of questions did they ask? How long was the interview? Open file or no? Thanks in advance!

Current student here. Someone from my class got off the waitlist less than a week before classes started, so don't lose hope everyone.
Hey, so I saw Meharry said they dont take updates. I was curious if you have any insight on this. I'm debating taking my MCAT again and I was curious if Meharry would even look at a second score. Do you know?

I posed this question before but anyone whie has been accepted or been interviewed, what types of questions did they ask? Was it conversational? Was it open file? Any insight would be great

Hasn’t the deadline for an MCAT score for this cycle passed? Look on the school’s admission page or MSAR.

Oh maybe, I'm not sure well regardless I'm still considering as I'm just lining up other paths should this cycle not work out.

Yeah I'm not too sure about this. I would follow the advice of @wysdoc

Best of luck!

Well I'm not sure how far out you are from your interview days but do you remember what types of questions they asked? Did it feel conversational? Just any insight is great
I think it really depends on who you get for your interview. One of my friends from my class says he was drilled but I had a different experience. My interviewer had my application open and was looking through it. He really only asked me a few light questions and then we just chatted. He was giving me advice about being a physician in the future from what I remember. He was almost speaking as if I was already accepted in a sense. I wasn't really sure how to take it but they accepted me in the end so I didn't have any complaints haha. I think it was just the luck of the draw.

My interviewer was pretty stoic, and just kinda moved from question to question without really reacting to my responses. But once I asked him some questions at the end, it became a bit more conversational. So I agree that it's super dependent on who you get!

Were the questions about stuff in your app or about your interest in the school and how you fit their mission etc.

Late. I spoke to current students who never heard back until April and even May. It is still early yet for Meharry but yet this knowledge still seems to escape me when I panic about not having an interview 😅

To anyone who also applied to the MHS program, do you think that will make them more likely to overlook us for the MD program and just automatically send us to that program? (Assuming they like your app)

Update: I went back and forth about if I should apply to both for this reason then was unsure how long I should wait to hear from the med school before I open this other door and it's really impossible to know exactly what to do so I just went ahead and applied but now I'm worried that if they DID like me, they may feel like I made their job easier by showing interest in that other program...ugh idk

Hey man! Best of luck! I'm obviously not an admissions counselor, but I think you're reading into it way too much. I know with most linkage programs adcom doesn't even begin to review apps until the normal MD interview cycle is complete or at least until they've given out all MD interview invites. Honestly, I think it's the opposite with you applying to both programs. That's not a bad thing, it's actually really admirable! It means you really like their school which they appreciate. All in all, I'd recommend to keep your head up and trust in the process. I think you're a great applicant seeing how active you are on SDN.

I mean I felt it was the best thing for me to do personally because I'm a planner. I dont like putting all my eggs in one basket and then being totally thrown off if my plan A doesn't come to fruition. Then I ended up getting a lot of input from family members who are not at all familiar with the pre med process saying they felt it might be the case so I started getting worried and second guessing my decision but idk it'll work out however it's meant to I guess. Thanks for the support

I’m so sorry. I hope you’ll get opportunities else where. If you don’t mind sharing, what were your stats and were you ORM or URM?

My stats are pretty low. I’m ORM as well.
Not a good combination.
