2022-2023 Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine (Provo, UT) Noorda-COM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it's currently "up there" on my list bc:
1. I like the idea of the curriculum, as caters to my style of learning moreso than mandatory didactic lectures (although I recognize the risks involved given there's no track record yet)
2. Research is heavily stressed in the curriculum compared to other DO programs, and the connections/support seems bountiful since there's partnerships with a public university nearby as well as a big hospital nearby (Utah Valley Hospital)
3. The area is beautiful which allows outdoorsy stuff to do (I like options to stay in or go out hiking, etc)
4. Good enough restaurants/groceries/boba nearby LOL
5. Students seem happy to be there
6. Dr Dougherty (the dean) is pretty well known throughout the nation and has connections to residency PD's..he's also worked with University of Utah and the Utah legislature on increasing funding for residency positions in the state. That alone should give merit for us potential Noorda grads since we'd be a familiar name during the app season for residency.
7. Provo as a city is what I am used to growing up (suburban-urban)

cheers.
THEY HAVE BOBA THANK GOD, I NEED MY THAI TEA

Can I ask what makes NOORDA your top choice? Just curious.
I'm from Utah and wanting to stay local, but some of the philosophy and other things going on at the University of Utah don't really jive with me. I've got some friends in Provo and it's a nice area that won't be too far from family. Housing is cheaper down there than in SLC too. I also really like the idea of a more flexible curriculum since my circadian rhythm is weird, among other things. Shoot me a DM if you wanna chat more! 🙂

My reasons ranking #2:

1. Close to family= free childcare on the weekends so I can study
2. 3rd year rotations are nearby vs. unpredictable placement, lottery systems, or requirements to find your own rotations at other schools
3. Flexible schedule and no required classes (I did an SMP that required class attendance and it monopolized all my time and I barely had time to study)
4. Lots of non-traditional students w/ families such as myself
5. Great pre-K school options for my kid

I can't access my portal!! Perhaps they are updating our application statuses for the Oct. 24 interviewees??? So scared

Seems like they might be updating the portal actively, my forms got checked off!

It's towards the top of my list for a few different reasons.
  • I found Noorda originally by watching one of Dr. Gray's YouTube videos which featured Kristen Anderson in Noorda admissions. The emphasis on student wellness and holistic everything (application review and patient care) is what ultimately made me apply.
  • It remains at the top of my list because to me they've demonstrated that they are willing to go above and beyond for students. During my interview, I asked about clinicals abroad. They said that if it's something I'd like to do, they would make it happen. Pretty direct answer which was surprising in a good way.
  • I'm potentially interested in also getting an MBA. The other schools I've seen with combined degree programs take additional years to complete (generally 1 - 2 years extra) whereas doing the combined program at Noorda still allows you to finish within 4 years. (They did say that even if I pursued the dual degree I would still be able to go abroad within the 4 years)
  • The overall vibe of the program. Most of what I've seen has been overwhelmingly positive. The students seem happy there and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of competitiveness between students. Everyone there comes across as really wanting you to succeed.
  • Flexible classes and scheduling and again emphasis on wellness. The suicide rate in this profession is already so high, so seeing a program acknowledging the need for work/life balance stood out.
  • They emphasize research more than other DO schools that I've seen. I don't necessarily want to go into research, but I appreciate the importance placed on standing out from other DO students when it comes to residency competitiveness.
I think the only thing that makes me hesitate about the school is the location. I've never been to Utah. I am an URM originally from Houston, Texas, and I went to undergrad in Pittsburgh, PA. Both of these places are far more diverse than Provo from what I can tell. I did ask about this during my interview, and it sounds like there are support systems in place which is reassuring. Planning to make a trip out in a few weeks to really get a feel for the area myself.

I'm URM too, and diversity, and laziness about taking both the COMLEX & USMLE is what is making me consider a MD program.

You reminded me about the research factor. There are thousands of physicians that haven't matched in recent years, and now that Step 1 is P/F, having research under your belt when trying to match will give you an advantage, particularly if you're trying to match in a specialty outside of primary care.

I have 1 other reason why I'm pro-NoordaCOM, but can't post it here. Anyone can DM me if they're interested, lol.

I totally agree with all of your points, especially on the wellness side. I'm from the Salt Lake City area and my wife lived for a couple of years in Provo so if you have questions about Utah/Provo feel free to DM me. 🙂

Hey, a fellow Texan! I’m from Dallas. There was another Texan present on my interview day too 🙂 I hope to visit soon as well. I’ve gotten a great feeling from this school.

group visit? lowkey would be hella down!

ugh I am freaking out! My interviewer and I had an amazing conversation and I felt confident afterwards. Now that it is the next day, I realized I did not mention a lot of my extracurricular activities and volunteer work I am involved in. I am totally freaking out. I cannot believe I left out some of my work.
Anyone else have this issue? Am I overthinking this?

I don't think I brought up any of my work like at all haha

I wouldn’t worry about it. The admissions team has already gone through your application at this point for you to get the interview. They already know all of that stuff. The interview is more about seeing how well you communicate not necessarily what you communicate about (unless you totally go off the wall or something).

Its normal to analyze and critique your interview performance while you await a decision. You put a lot of work to get to that point and its normal to be anxious. So yes, you're overthinking it, but most of us do the same thing.

I felt similarly after my interview, but then I reminded myself that my interviewer saw my secondary video in which I discussed all of that!

We could all def plan something out, shoot me a DM if anyone is interested!
Might be short notice, but I already booked a trip out for the 27th and 28th of this month. Figured I'd save on a flight and go from Pittsburgh to Houston to SLC back to Pittsburgh because I'm already flying home for Thanksgiving haha. If anyone else ends up there at the same time definitely let me know!

Haha my birthday is the 25th so doubt I’d make it out then, let us know how it is!

Are you guys visiting the school or just the area? I would love to tour the campus and area, but I thought they weren't doing anything until the new building is finished next summer. I didn't think they were allowing tours of the temporary building.

I'm just going on my own. Nothing formal. I was told that while I can't tour the building, I can walk around campus in general. I was told I may be stopped by security but I can just tell them why I'm there and see what they say. I'm also going to look at housing while I'm there and wander around the area in general.

That's a good idea, I'll have to do that too.

Same reasoning here! Anyone going to the ambassador thing on the 16th they emailed about?

If it was mentioned in the chat or Q and A with the admissions team I missed it… when does the admissions team meet?
I interviewed 11/1

they don't really say when, just that it may take a bit
