2023-2024 Baylor

They will assign you a date but if you absolutely cannot make that date email them and ask if you could schedule for a different date
Okay thanks!! 🙂 I got an II this morning, I was kinda curious if it was normal for them to just give one date or if it meant someone else cancelled last minute (or something like that)

Did they give a date or you could only find one date? If it is this week or next, it is possible they are trying to fill up some open slots to have a full schedule but if it is next month, it might be because whatever they opened up got filled.

I think they just assign us to a date a month from the ii, the portal has no option to pick a date. The email just told us when our interview was!😆

Interviewed yesterday, and now I am worried about the potential to be assigned to the Temple campus. (Obviously a huge draw of BCM is going to the TMC and the clinical opportunities there. Trying to figure out how this caveat may affect my rank list.) Once you match at BCM in February, you will rank the two campuses and then get matched to one in March. If you have a spouse in Houston/Temple, you can appeal to stay there due to family, but this does not work with sig. others. Anyone know what would be the case for a fiance but not officially married yet?

This year someone who had a home close to campus was denied based on financial reason as an acceptable one.

I felt the same way; they were very adamant that not everyone gets their first choice, and there's seemingly no potential for appeal.

If you can’t accept the possibility, then rank other schools higher in your Match.
I don’t want this topic to take over the Baylor thread this year (although hey free speech) but if you want to see lots of discussion about it please read through the 2022-2023 Baylor thread.
There is a significant element of chance in the TMDSAS match process which you have some control over by your ranking choices.

If location is an important element dont take a risk, rank another school higher that meets your location needs. It is too early to have these discussions and people should wait until January when we come down to ranking.

Interviewed at Baylor on Friday and they talked a lot about their brand new curriculum which seems to include mandatory 8am lectures, which I am not a fan of. Current MS2-4s commented about how they had the option to watch video lectures in the old curriculum and liked it. Admin said only 25% of students went to in-person classes and the new curriculum will "fix" that. They weren't super clear if the new curriculum was going to be mandatory in-person though, does anyone know?

"This is just my opinion here, y'all" : If they are making the pre-clinical curriculum more condensed, they need to have an idea on whether the students are absorbing & understanding the information. This is much easier for a professor to do with an in-person class. You will also have a more immediate chance to clarify points, in person.

I talked to a friend about it and she said its a few mandatory times a week! She said it's also not necessarily mandatory lecture style, it's small group discussion based with a faculty mentor.

Does everyone that interviews get a chance to visit the campuses in person? Or is it just those who pre-match? I saw an earlier comment about an open house, but I couldn't find info about that on the website so I was wondering what that entails!

@hadv3r @MCAThiccy Are you all attending class everyday?
Personally, I attend the "Lectures." They are Large Group Interactions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 to 10. They cover topics such as physical examinations, patient interactions, etc. You don't have to attend. It's not like you have to put in effort for medical school. Attend lectures that you're paying for in med school? Pfft, who does that?

Temple does not have mandatory lecture attendance?

Regarding the school schedule: We have lectures from 8 to 10 on M, W, and F. T and Thr are free study times with a video lecture (asynchronus) from 11 to 12. You can also do your scheduled elective on T or Thr. We also have Preceptorships with a clinican on T or Thr depending on your schedule.
There is a quiz regarding the information discussed during the week. That quiz is a completion grade and is low stakes. The next week's exam is graded (still pass fail; 70% to pass) and covers the previous weeks information and the exam's week's information.
PBL is basically a group of 8 people sitting around a table reading a case and asking questions.
This child has asthma and can't afford his inhaler.
Okay, well, what are some of the ways that he can get Albuterol at a reduced cost?
What does Albuterol do?
How is asthma diagnosed?
What is asthma?
What are some insurance options that a child may have access to?

You then have your questions and then you look up the answers using the internet, books, articles, etc. The facilitator (such as an MD, PhD, or DO) at the group cannot give you answers. They just say, "I don't think you need to know about Muscarinic antagonists for this case." They just help to prevent going into rabbit holes when you're Googling answers.

Afterwards, you create a document that has 3 sources. You state why you used those sources and some downsides to that source:
I used Osmosis because XYZ. However, Osmosis is limited because lmnop
I used VisualDx because abc. However, VisualDx is mainly used for background questions and I needed to ask foreground questions.
I used PudMed because efgh. However, PubMed is limited because it's assuming that I have previous knowledge about this given topic and used medical jargon that is not readily understood by most medical students.

Afterwards, you give two content gaps:
Regarding asthma, what does IL-5 do? How does Zilutron cause acute hepatitis in a previously healthy individual?

You then submit that document. Afterwards, you go home and you begin doing research on your questions (your group creates 10 questions regarding the case). You write down your answers under each question in the document and then bring those answers to class. You then popcorn read the answers in the PBL session. "I learned that asthma can be diagnosed using the methacholine challenge. Within the lungs, there are M3 receptors that use actylcholine to cause bronchoconstriction. Since methacholine is an acetylcholine analouge, it can induce excessive bronchoconstriction in a person who has asthma, thus confiriming the presence of asthma."

"Some insurance options available to the child would be CHIP, the Children's Health Insurance Plan, etc."

One week would have 2 cases, then the following week would have one case and the graded assessment.
You are not given the official questions that Baylor wanted you to ask about the asthma case until the day the case is due and submitted.
Those questions are formatted as such:
Students will be able to understand the multiple insurance options a child may have. Students will be able to navigate the dicussion of healthcare options with patients.

Sample questions: Who is excluded from CHIP? What does CHIP cover? Can undocumented children use CHIP? What does wheezing sound like? Why does wheezing occur? How is wheezing different from Rhonchi or Rales?

You will never be given the answers to the "official" questions, either. You have to Google or study those answers on your own. When we have an exam on Friday, you're responsible for the information given in lecture on that friday.

The exam is at 1 PM. The exam lecture is on 8 AM to 10 AM. Your PBL session regarding the exam material is from 10 to 12. The official questions are released at 12. Again, the exam covering all this material will be taken (in person within the examination hall) at 1.

Electives can be done in person or virtually (most of them are virtually). Oh, sometimes you study something in detail, such as the mechanisms of asthma, for it to not be on the exam. No one tells you what's going to be on the exam, how much to study, what to not study, and what is high yield.

Are OOS interviews usually done later in the cycle? I have strong family ties to TX.

People that interview, I believe they give us a link to schedule an in-person preview during/after the interview

I am a student over yonder at UT Southwestern. Was also accepted to Baylor (Houston) as an out of state'r. Happy to answer questions concerning UTSW and Baylor (limited to what I know). will NOT review any essays.
How did you get acceptances from Baylor and UT-Southwestern given their strong in state biases in admissions?

We have 10% OOS quota in all schools and slightly more at Baylor as a private school. Some good OOS students get into several Texas schools each year.

Also the nice thing about TMDSAS schools is they don't require you to prove any Texas ties. (exceptions some which have a regional mission)
We just like smart premeds to fall in love with Texas!

A couple people have DM'd me asking why I chose UTSW over Baylor. I'll quote what I told people here:

The two schools are super similar and I loved my interview and visits to both. I especially loved Baylor because I have lots of friends living in Houston. Reasons I picked UTSW instead:
  1. UTSW has much better in-house residency programs. UTSW is #1 in the nation for plastic surgery, #6 Urology, #8 Dermatology, #9 internal medicine, etc etc etc. So your in-house residency is fantastic and that takes some stress off with matching.
  2. UTSW is the only medical school in Dallas, so UTSW students get all the resources, scholarships, and opportunities. Baylor students have to compete with McGovern students, UH students, A&M EnMed students, etc.
  3. UTSW is extremely active in improving the medical school and the UTSW medical center is growing fast. They're literally building a new psychiatric hospital and pediatrics hospital right now. This means UTSW will only get better over time.
Also something to consider, which I think is still a thing this year(?):
  • Baylor randomly assigns 40ish students to their Temple campus and you can't transfer between campuses. So consider if you're interested in being at Temple. Though if someone knows more about this, please comment.
Now that I'm at UTSW, I actually love it. There feel like an infinite amount of opportunities; we literally get emails all the time with attendings looking for med student researchers or offering shadowing opportunities. I went in fully expecting to just get my degree and get out, but now I feel a strong sense of belonging.
It has always been a tough decision choosing between Baylor and UTSW when accepted to both.
Your reasons sound valid as are the reasons for people who love the bustle of TMC Houston.

Oh crud I just realized I posted this in the Baylor thread and not UTSW thread. I'm sorry! I'll move it.

I thought TMDSAS schools are required by law to accept mostly instate?

Do all II get sent out at the same time on the days they are sent or do they get sent out periodically as the day goes on?

I just submitted my secondary a few days ago(8/12) and my letters of recommendation are marked as Not Received on the Status page even though it shows that all of them have been received. I am complete at other Texas schools, but Baylor has not sent me an "Application Complete" email. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I call admissions or wait a few more days? Thanks in advance!

I would say to give it a few more days. I think LORs have to be manually confirmed if I recall correctly.

In my experience, each school confirmed my letters at different times over the span of a few days - it isn’t automatic.

Does anyone know if they check if your prerequisites are completed and accepted before sending out an II? I'm a little worried about what they exactly would count for Humanities-Social/Behavioral Sciences

The TMDSAS schools do not do that degree of checking until later in the year, usually after they have offered someone admission. They don't have the personnel to do that degree of checking on every one of thousands of applicants.
Therefore it would be wise of you, the applicant, to look into whether you qualify for this school by reading their website, researching on the MSAR, or perhaps emailing to see if your classes meet the qualifications.

This may be worth moving to the Baylor-specific thread. But to answer the question, go to the website and contact the admissions office. BCM also suggests working with your institutional prehealth or academic advisor.

For reference:

Humanities-Social/Behavioral Sciences (12 semester hours) Examples: psychology, sociology, anthropology, foreign languages, ethics, philosophy, theology, literature, art history

Baylor has a strong emphasis in medical humanities with coursework that involves "analytical, communicative, and performative skills utilized in the arts and humanities. ... Residents have attended lectures and participated in small group activities on the following topics: social determinants of health, literature in medicine, healthcare ethics, music therapy, palliative care, life-writing, and other topics related to the medical humanities. We instructed the speakers to structure their session around the themes of attention, empathy, and tolerance of ambiguity as these are topics that the AAMC and other medical education organizations have endorsed as important for learners."

The closer your coursework intersects with the content or the teaching methods, the more aligned your courses may be with traditional "humanities" upon which the medical humanities curriculum can be built.

Where can I find the dates that II's were sent out last year? I found it randomly one day, but can't seem to find it again

Thanks in advance!

I got an II for Baylor a few days ago and was pretty shocked since my LM is 73 with 513 MCAT. Does anyone know if my below average mcat score for the school still plays a role in whether I get in, or is it just up to how my interview goes? idk if I should get my hopes up since I was really not expecting this II lol
