2023-2024 Baylor

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can you explain UTSW being graded and ranked? They told us during the interview that preclinical was P/F.
@roundgarlic maybe ask this on the UTSW thread for more answers?
I think the answer is that when you take a test they do score it and keep track, even though all they report to you is whether you passed.
This becomes a factor mainly for students who are aiming for the AOA medical honor society and helps the admins deciding who gets that coveted AOA status a way to stratify performance.

I've spoken to skep. They actually started anatomy, lectures and hard science lectures about four weeks earlier than we did. We spent the last four weeks speaking about insurance, ethics, and patient consent. UT Southwestern is definitely a lot harder because they are graded and ranked and are already doing anatomy. Everyone in my class is grateful that we are Baylor because we are not graded. It is all pass fail. Still, this is a Medical School. I said all that we study because some people on here in SDN think that going to lecture is not mandatory or that it is not needed. You cannot skate on by in medical school without putting the effort. If you want some thing you have to put in the effort and that is true with everything in life.
Does Baylor follow same curriculum/timelines at both campuses?
Since Baylor has changed to single year of in class, how much faster is it going compared to last year?

Several of my classmates have friends at UTSW. Those students are stressed the heck OUT. There was a story in which two students were speaking to each other and one said, "I'm going to read my textbook now. It's more useful than speaking to you." A student celebrated her birthday for two hours with friends, after which everyone left her apartment to study for an anatomy exam.
I am biased towards Baylor. At Temple, it's pretty cool. We celebrate everyone's birthday with treats, sing happy birthday, and even celebrated the Temple's Dean's Birthday with breakfast tacos and cake.
If you want a specialty, you can have it. I'm currently interested in Pathology, and so I emailed the Pathology department at Baylor Scott and White Temple. Within 2 minutes I got an email back asking when I could stop by the department to discuss research opportunities.
I went to the 2nd and 6th floor. The 2nd floor is anatomical pathology while the 6th floor is the Pathology Head's Office space. It's litterally right across the hallway from Neurosurgery. I met with a Neurosurgeon in the hallway and he said that if I was interested in Neurosurgery, I could email him or the department head. 🙂
I actually like Temple because legit everyone loves you as a student and wants to poach you for their residency.

Our upper classmen stick to their traditional curriculum.
The current MS1 Houston and Temple students follow the accelerated curriculum together. It's starting to pick up the pace, Vandy.

You are now vacillating between cutting live people vs dead people for residency?

Sounds like you think there is an advantage to wanting to be at Temple and people should be happier if they get assigned Temple.

I'm keeping an open mind between Neurosurgery and Dermatopathology (fellowship after Pathology residency). It depends on my STEP 2 Score, research, and recommendation letters. I don't want to have a specialty that works in a clinic and deals too much with insurance.

@chicandtoughness said she spends all day on the beach at UTMB.
I actually have photosensitive dermatitis, so I am not spending all day on the beach, sorry to burst anyone's bubble 🙁

That said, the overall vibe is SUPER chill and my experience has been pretty similar to Thiccy's experience 🙂
(Hop on over to the UTMB thread if you want more Sealy gossip, I don't wanna hijack the Baylor thread!)

@chicandtoughness - please post something along the lines of what @MCAThiccy did here on the UTMB thread. I just picked your name since you do respond. 🙂

Hi! I have my Baylor interview coming up, and i RSVP’s for the pre-interview Zoom social but unfortunately can’t go anymore. Should i be concerned/worried ab this affecting anything bc I’m not demonstrating interest or anything?? Has anyone who has done it already speak on the vibes/structure of it/if it’s beneficial?

The Zoom social is not part of an evaluation of you, but I recommend you let them know you have a schedule conflict if your plans have changed

I interview here tomorrow but haven’t received any info about my interview schedule. did ppl who already interviewed get their info the evening before or something?

This may have already been answered elsewhere, but are the BCM interviews open-file except for test scores? I can't seem to find that info anywhere

Man, if only people shared their post interview experience at Baylor 🤔
Still haven't done the closing session, but the faculty interview and student interview were absolutely fantastic. That combined with the pre-interview social have seriously increased my interest in BCM

I agree! I had two faculty members though but they were extremely nice and it was fully conversational. Hoping for the best!

In-case anybody is wondering about all the interview dates for this application cycle

overall vibe was nice but the post-interview neuroticism is so real. keep replaying questions in my head and how i should've answered them instead 😂 also lowkey feel like my first interviewer didn’t like me so rip
when you have all the perfect answers that you should have given, write a book!

Glad I am not the only one replaying questions I could have answered differently in my head!
I bet y'all did amazing!! I feel the same about mine, but life goes on😎

Also, if anyone took the Temple tour, would y'all be willing to share what you learned about Temple or what your thoughts were to the others here on SDN so that any questions can be cleared up?

does anybody know whether mstp admission is rolling after interview, or do they reconvene in jan to make final decisions?
