2023-2024 Baylor

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got an II for Baylor a few days ago and was pretty shocked since my LM is 73 with 513 MCAT. Does anyone know if my below average mcat score for the school still plays a role in whether I get in, or is it just up to how my interview goes? idk if I should get my hopes up since I was really not expecting this II lol
Control what you can control, you got an II for a reason go kill it!

An interview means they’re interested in you - have a great interview day!

Thank you so much!

Guys, I interviewed on August 11th, and I just learned you are supposed to send thank you notes after your interviews in traditional interviews. I know the process of sending the emails, but I was wondering if it was too late to send them now (10-11 days later). Should I write a thank you note or just leave it be 🙁((((( We are supposed to send them to the admissions office, who distribute them to the interviewers, so I think I messed up :0

Thank you notes are up to you. If it’s your custom and comes naturally, then send one

Thank you! I went ahead and did. I included parts of our conversation and my notes were genuine, in my opinion. There is a lot of opacity in this process. Once I learned about this custom, it seemed like the right thing to do.

Also, do they really only assign interview dates even if you request a reschedule?

You can ask for reschedule but it is not a good idea to go beyond september/early October if you are given that. What date did they give you?

Agree, and if you need a new date be absolutely sure you can go to that one because they will only reschedule you once.

Why isn’t it good to go beyond early October?
Well I just recommend scheduling interviews ASAP. you never know how busy you will be later & how many other interviews or commitments may come up by then. Nothing wrong with interviews past October.
The SDN member asking this question @ACLegan7 has had a spate of interview invitations lately so I'm not surprised there could be some previous commitments and a need for an alternate date.

It is best to accept an interview as early as possible to make yourself eligible for successive rounds prematch evaluations that start happening starting mid october.

If people are called later they dont have much of a choice. If someone is called today but pick a date in November, they are missing round 1 of prematch offers. Schools tend to pick certain number of prematches each round and even if one does not make in round 1, they can be picked in round 2, round 3, round 4, match and then waitlist.

Prematches don’t start until October 15 at the earliest
Baylor has been the exception in Texas. They have not been giving anything in October despite joining tmdsas. Their first matches while on amcas were around thanksgiving and last two year I believe their earliest were given in November.

Yes, my app wasn't verified until 8/8, and I had AMCAS apps to work on so they were delayed a few more days than that. I submitted Baylor and UTSW first and got IIs for them so hopefully I get ones from the other schools.
wow, congrats! I wasn't complete until 8/10 and also have II for those two as of now, seems like they are reviewing apps at a faster pace than the other schools

Omg almost identical experience! LM 83 and verified 8/14. Got IIs at UTSW and Baylor after being complete 8/19!

Anyone know if it's too late to apply to any texas MDs? I'm an OOS student but regret not applying to baylor specifically.

I have a lot of family in texas and want to move to the state but the cycle started pretty early and they had a separate app so I wasn't sure if they even took in OOS students.

They take up to 10% OOS. The separate app is a barrier to you right now because you would need to write 2 new 2500 word essays, fill out the app which is structured a bit differently, and wait until about the end of September for schools to get it.
Or you could add TCU to your AMCAS app right now, it’s in Fort Worth TX and it’s the only Texas MD school on AMCAS. TCU has no limit on OOS enrollment.

I did apply to TCU actually since that was the only Texas MD on the list. I was specifically wondering about if I would be competitive with schools getting my app at the end of september. I know for AMCAS, being late is a death sentence but I was wondering if its the same with Texas MDs

You are a very competitive applicant so I’m sure they would take time to look at you. Think about whether you would choose a TX school over the schools you are already interviewing at, as part of deciding

Thanks! That is the only thing I was wondering is if they would've already filled their OOS seats by then.

Your stats seem exceptional and as an URM SES you will probably make it into one of those schools that will give you full aid (Cornell, Penn, Yale, Columbia etc). Since you seem to already have IIs from some of the top schools, it might be better to focus on those rather than start working on these apps.

Some quick updates on Baylor. We have a test almost every week. This week we’re going over breast cancer, receptors, inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, polyclonal antibodies, anti-estrogenic medications, histology, pathology, differential diagnosis, DNA replication, DNA repair, the amino acids, which ones are polar, nonpolar, basic or acidic, and can be phosphorylated. In terms of histology, we have to figure out what we’re looking at what kind of stains we can use what the stains stand for and even consider the usage of immunohistochemistry. Our very first lecture on pathology and histology was eight hours long with 3 10 minute breaks. We also have to figure out which amino acids are essential, conditional, or nonessential. Afterwords we have to use those amino acids in a clinical scenario. Oh, and we also have to go over pharmacology, so going over pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics the mechanism of action of several medication’s on the heart rate, Ionotrophy, vasculature, and the rate of elimination from the kidneys and liver. Oh, and we have to figure out the differences in acetylation in terms of metabolism of the drugs.
This Friday we have two exams. One at 10 in the morning and the other exam is in two in the afternoon. Both exams are 40 questions each.
I attended class today and studied afterwards and then total spent 12 hours actively learning.
Welcome to Baylor.

Prof. Mcathiccy, in your professional opinion, other school students like @skeptastic at McGovern have it made? 🙂

@chicandtoughness said she spends all day on the beach at UTMB.

I've spoken to skep. They actually started anatomy, lectures and hard science lectures about four weeks earlier than we did. We spent the last four weeks speaking about insurance, ethics, and patient consent. UT Southwestern is definitely a lot harder because they are graded and ranked and are already doing anatomy. Everyone in my class is grateful that we are Baylor because we are not graded. It is all pass fail. Still, this is a Medical School. I said all that we study because some people on here in SDN think that going to lecture is not mandatory or that it is not needed. You cannot skate on by in medical school without putting the effort. If you want some thing you have to put in the effort and that is true with everything in life.

Can you explain UTSW being graded and ranked? They told us during the interview that preclinical was P/F.
