2023-2024 Mercer

IS means in state

We know. Mercer only accepts IS. They were referring to the “IL.” It’s usually “II” meaning interview invite.

Hey y'all I was complete in September and still haven't heard back 🙁 I called the admissions coordinator a few times and she's really kind and she told me that they go through all applications manually. I have lower stats (a 495 MCAT and 3.5 GPA) and she told me I have a chance of acceptance but still no interview :/ has anyone heard back from Mercer?

I am in the same boat as you. I have 498 mcat with 3.9 GPA. I interviewed in the october and have been patiently waiting. The wait however is getting to my head as this is my third cycle applying to Mercer and I applied 3 times ED only to Mercer because I am very dedicated to attend MUSM. I think we all just need to hang in there and see what God has planned for us in the next few months.

Can someone who is or know someone who is in that accepted groupchat let us know how many accepted students are there. Max is 180 students across three campus so we know how many seats are left. They are interviewing till Feb 3,2024.

Keeping everyone in my prayers! Still waiting for an interview tho :/

I am in the same boat! I’ve constantly been checking my email and this forum. It’s good to read that other people are feeling the same way. My stats are the same as both of you. Just have to be patient and know that they are getting to us I guess. I’m waiting for an interview invite.

I have called a few times and all they tell me is just to wait and that they review it holistically so idk anymore, I'm checking my emails like an addict

Bridget and all of the folks involved with admissions are super kind. She didn’t share more because she couldn’t. They are sending out IIs through February 2nd so there is still time.

There are folks from previous application cycles on SDN who got in with a below 500 MCAT; it seemed like some of them just had to wait a little bit. Hellooooooo is one of them and they regularly post in this thread.

From my interview, they are most interested in mission fit and meaningful ties to Georgia. I lived in GA when I was young, my family is from GA, and I’ve been a resident of the state for more than five years. The second question in my interview was still about me explaining my connection to the state. There is a chance that maybe my interviewers just didn’t read all of my app but I had to explain how deep my ties go.

When folks are saying they are a good fit but haven’t heard back I don’t assume it’s about stats but more about the above. Everyone in my interview group was born in Georgia or moved to GA when they were young. More than anything else I think demonstrating a commitment to practice in Georgia is key.

I've volunteered in rural areas and have been living in Georgia since 2020 but is that enough for them to consider me? I do plan on living in Georgia for a long time and am committed to their mission of serving in rural areas but I wish they would give me a chance lol

I'm kind of in the same boat. I felt so confident about my interview, but I'm not from GA. However, I've been here for 7 years, my husband is from here and I do have a child who goes to elementary school, so I feel like that adds to my GA commitment.

Those seem like strong ties. Interested to hear more about your interview so will PM you.

You're showing commitment though, since your family is here. But I'm not an expert.

yeah im in the same boat as everyone else i used to be so neurotic on this page bc i thought i was the only one being ghosted but clearly not, been complete since sept and not even an II lol

We get it. I’ve not been ghosted by Mercer but I have been ghosted everywhere else thus far. That may turn out to be okay if I get into Mercer as it is my top choice but…we’ll see.

I saw up above that you have an “A” from PCOM GA so super congrats there. No matter what you’re going to be a physician.

that’s right! thank you

I will share my story. I have been applying to Mercer for third time as an Early Decision applicant. My experience in rural areas of Georgia is in thousands of hours. I have worked as a medical assistant and volunteered throughout rural georgia. I have also shown interest to be a family medicine physician and serving rural area of georgia upon graduating as I am someone who was born and brought up in rural village in India. I am not sure what is stopping me from getting into Mercer as I called them last year after I was left on waitlist. The admission committee told me that everything was fine on my application and there was no red flags. I just do not understand what else they need from me. I am doing way more than anything they are requiring from premed students. I am just hopeful at this point.

Wow…that seems like an impressive and well tailored application. I’m genuinely surprised you haven’t made it off a waitlist…

May I ask how long you’ve lived in Georgia? I know this seems like it shouldn’t matter but for them it does… (You can PM me if you don’t want to disclose here).

did they give you an interview yet or are you waiting on that?

i have been living in georgia for 9 years now.

Any updates anyone. Does anyone know how many students are in that accepted groupchat so we can guess how many seats are filled?

Can I DM someone my "Why Medicine" answer for the interview?

Are those all the students that have been accepted or some students have not joined it. Because if that is correct, then almost 2/3 of class is still empty.

While I also desperately want to believe that’s the case, I think it’s highly unlikely and folks shouldn’t read too much into that number this early in the process… 1) They fill half their class from early decision and special programs 2) the GroupMe often includes some upperclassman so the number is inherently soft, and 3) not everyone who has been accepted joins the GroupMe, especially folks holding onto more than one acceptance.

The GroupMe number will likely be a more accurate representation of the class after some of the deadlines to whittle down acceptances come to pass.

They accept 180 for this cycle i think, 60 for each campus.
When I interviewed, they said 60 at Macon, 60 at Savannah, and 40 at Columbus. That would make only 160 total students. Maybe they gave me outdated information, idk.

Perhaps…see “2. Brief Notes on Timeline for Notification regarding Status Updates for Interviewed Applicants,” of your interview day schedule. It’s the second bullet in this section.

That was from last year or the year before. This year is 180. I also saw on their Insta account with 171 students attending for white coat ceremony for class of 2027.
I don’t know if they will actually accept more than their intended number or not, but it’s still hopeful!

Apologies if this isn't directly related to this admission cycle, but my spouse is looking at applying next year and we are curious about Mercer's mission.

Namely we would like to know more about what is included in "medically underserved and rural areas" as most of the emphasis in the threads I have read and their Mercer website is focused on the rural aspect. Is there much emphasis given to applicants who would like to work with other underserved communities as well?

My wife did grow up in rural GA, but a large amount of her clinical experience has come from working at a clinic focused on the underserved Hispanic community around metro Atlanta. I think she may be interested in working with both communities in the future. Is this something that would be compatible with Mercer's mission?

Your wife is in a strong position. Growing up in a rural community is the strongest indicator that someone will practice in one (data supports this which is went Mercer emphasizes it so much). There are a lot of underserved Hispanic communities in rural Georgia because of agriculture so there is some seamless overlap there for her. Your wife should be just fine.

For anyone that interviewed, for the "tell me about yourself" question are we answering the question from an academic standpoint or personal? For example my hobbies are reading, writing (a novel), playing the violin or do I talk about my research, leadership, etc. I'm seeing so many conflicted answers on different websites so I figured I'd ask someone whose interviewed at Mercer and what their thoughts are

I answered in a timeline way to give them a full picture of who I am if that makes sense. “I’m [insert name]. I was born in [city, state] where I was primarily raised by [insert my childhood guardians]. Then I went into where I went to university and the most influential activities I participated in while there. I also included hobbies and where I am currently. I finished things off with what my future goals are. This was all said in under 2 mins.

When I did a mock interview with this timeline style, I was told it was one of the best. I hope this was helpful!

Oh my gosh thank you so much!! I will definitely use this as a template 🙂

For anyone that's interviewed, how was it?
It was very conversational interview. It was very stress free and most laidback interview I have given. Just review your application again, know your purpose of why you want to pursue medicine and why you want to attend mercer med school. Based on your responses, they will ask you more question.

Thank you! It's just one interview with 2 people for 30-45 minutes right? And, do you still have "lunch" with M2s despite it all being virtual?
