2023-2024 UC San Francisco

"We require a minimum of three and a maximum of five letters of recommendation. At least two of the letters should be from faculty who have taught you or supervised you in research. We expect to receive committee letters or letter packets, if available at your institution."

One of my LORs is from a Clinical Research Position... anyone know if "faculty" means that they expect the research to have been conducted while at university as opposed to in the capacity of a job? (my supervisor is a PhD)

I have two professor LORs, but one of them is not on an official letterhead 🙁

Has the "This review process can take up to twelve weeks" held true for most people? I haven't heard anything since submitting secondary mid-August and am curious what percentage of others have not heard back (interview or rejection) in the twelve week post-submission window.

I submitted around the same time as you and haven’t heard back. Someone I know knows someone in admissions and apparently they are just behind this year

It held true for me almost down to the exact 12 week mark since primary verification.

Interviewing on Thursday, anyone who has interviewed know when they send the zoom links/if we know who the interviewers are beforehand? My neurotic ass is getting kinda worried by the silence ;_;

About to send in my Secondary, and begin my wait.
How long does it take between submitting the secondary and getting an interview invite? Some schools are pretty fast.

Doesn't seem to be extremely linear/predictable. They say they try to get back to you one way or the other within 12 weeks. However, they're running a bit behind schedule, and there are people who have submitted upwards of 12 weeks ago and haven't yet been notified of their disposition. On the other hand, there are other people who received a response in well under 12 weeks.

Does UCSF actually have an admissions office? I've called multiple times a day for weeks, sent emails, and heard nothing. I just had a quick question 😭
Sent an email 1+ week ago and haven't had a response either 🙁

I believe you find out the morning of!

Yes! I received my schedule (which included my interviewers' names) around 8:15 am the morning of my interviews

Dang, they send Rs even to folks they never sent a secondary to?
When did you submit your primaries?
I sent my primary in early August, I had already assumed that not receiving my secondary yet meant R, so it kind of just felt like a formality (though I know they do send secondaries really late in the process sometimes)

May I ask what it says?

Dear ________,

We greatly appreciate your interest in attending the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. I am sorry to inform you that the Committee on Admissions has decided not to advance your application for 2024.

We have come to this decision reluctantly. It is based on the Committee’s review of your AMCAS application, including your academic record, outside activities and personal statement. This adverse decision does not mean that we believe that you are unqualified to enter this medical school on either personal or scholarly criteria. It simply reflects the intense competition for admission here. We have a limited number of available positions, and because of this we must turn away a large number of admirable people, most of whom go on to successful careers elsewhere.

I sincerely hope that you will be able to attend medical school in 2024 and am sorry that we cannot accommodate you at UCSF.

Sincerely,
Michelle A. Albert, MD, MPH
Associate Dean for Admissions

Thanks! Everyone was incredibly kind and warm, and the interviews were very conversational - UCSF is (and has been) my dream school, for sure 🥰🤞🏼
Wild, I would have imagined that UCSF of all schools would really grill you. I had heard horror stories of interviewers saying "You lied on your application didnt you" to test your ability to communicate under pressure. Maybe they were fake, because if anywhere would do it I imagine it would be a top 5 school.

If you applied to JMP and are not selected for that program, do you still get considered for the Regular MD Program?

Worth giving an appeal a shot? Didn't get a secondary and got hit with the R but 2/3 of my major research efforts are highly in-line with the school

Realistically, if they didn't select you for a secondary, they're not going to select you for an interview or accept you even if you somehow got them to reconsider this step. It's been a few years since I graduated, but I've never heard of any appeals actually changing the ultimate outcome.

just making sure, ucsf does not allow thank you letters after interviews?

They ask that you do not contact your interviewers individually. You may send thank you letters to the admissions office, and they will hold onto them until your admissions decision is released. Once you receive a decision, they will forward the letters to your interviewers.
