For those on the WL, when can we start sending Letter of Intents?

I don’t think we can? I think they do take update letters though
When realistically can we start sending any updates? Like after April 30th? Or before? Because on Msar is says “ Waitlist procedures: Applicants on the waitlist will not be considered until after May 1, 2025“. I’m just really new to this waitlist system lol

You can send it asap. I think that just means that applicants won’t get As of the WL until after May 1

Same. According to AMCAS CYMS alternate waitlist status is supposed to show up. Is there any reason why it might not be?
From the CYMS page: “The data below was provided to the AAMC by the medical schools.”

The reason is that it takes a human submitting the list to the AAMC. It will probably just take some time. My acceptance for a different school wasn’t submitted to AAMC until a month after I was admitted by the school.

No reason to stress!

Can any current students or LA locals comment on the state of public transportation or walkability of Westwood?

I don’t have a car, so I’m wondering if I can get away with it

I was told by a friend who is an M1 that you definitely don’t need a car for M1, but it would be really nice to have for certain clinical assignments. If the preclinical curriculum is lengthened to 1.5 years, I would presume you wouldn’t maybe want a car until the middle of M2

You can if you stay within Westwood / Santa Mónica area I’d say

How does the financial aid work for accepted waitlist students? Is there really no aid left over? What about need-based aid?
Need-based aid is fairly generous. Depending on how they calculate your need, you can get up to half tuition covered by need-based scholarships. Typically few merit-based scholarships are available by the time folks are getting off waitlist unless accepted students that have scholarships forgo their acceptance. In that case, more scholarships are freed up.

Westwood itself is easily walkable if you're living in Westwood (esp grad housing). Weyburn and Hilgard are within 10-15 min walk from DGSOM. Westwood itself has restaurants, target, CVS, trader joe's, ralph's, whole food's, etc etc, so you'll be completely fine without a car. During MS1, you'll have your EACE, which most students carpool for, so you aren't required to have a car. I will say that it's nice to have a car during MS1 year in order to fully enjoy everything around LA though.

When do we expect merit scholarships to be released?

I lived in LA for almost a decade without a car, totally fine.

I think the default is loans, not sure scholarship committee has met yet. Mine showed loans immediately before I even proved residency
Thanks for the info! I emailed the fin aid office on march 5th and they said “the scholarships committee will convene in the next few weeks” and “will share updated as they become available.” (emailed bc I have to choose what second look weekend to attend, such a nothingburger response)

Does UCLA allow students to take a dedicated research year (in addition to the discovery portion of the curriculum which looks like it will be shortened anyway if preclinical is extended)? And do students pay tuition during this time? Can’t find any information on that.
Yes, you're free to take a Leave of Absence from the medical school (either for research, pursuing dual degree, or personal reasons). No tuition during this time because you have no ties to the school during this year. Also means that you don't qualify for student health insurance through UCLA, no access to UCLA services (gym, rec classes, behavioral wellness center, UCLA grad bus), etc. Also some loan considerations there because you'll max out the grace period, so you can apply for forebearance (all things that the fin aid office is exerienced with cause many students have done this before you).

Yeah I am a bit nervous about the change in curriculum and us being the first class with this modification. I am considering my options however, it is hard with incomplete information
Totally understand feelings of walking through murky waters and not knowing what's ahead. Personal opinion, but I think it's a change for the better. Lengthening preclinical will give you more time to build that strong foundation knowledge before going into clerkships. Don't know what the official list of changes will be, but I saw a mention of requiring STEP 1 pass before starting clerkships, and I'm a proponent of that. Gives you that extra kick in the butt to make sure you have all your foundational stuff squared away before clerkships.

Just know that these changes are in response to the drastic changes that the classes before you experienced with the shortened preclinical year to allow for a 9mo discovery year. It's worked for some and hasn't worked for others, and DGSOM is trying to do what it can to make sure that all students succeed. If it makes folks feel safer, the possible changes coming this year will align DGSOM's curriculum more with most of the medical schools out there.

Anyone know if we will find out where we are on the regular WL/if they even tell us that info?

Have all the MD/PhD decisions gone out? I haven't received an interview but still haven't gotten rejected...am I just getting ghosted

UCLA DGSOM will no longer accept international students in the future fyi to anyone who didn’t know

For those accepted, have you guys done any other requirements like health screenings, transcript uploads, etc yet? I haven't done anything because I am still actively working on financial aid but dont want to be behind

I haven’t done anything except finaid. Haven’t heard anything about health screening and the admitted students website says they only need final transcripts if you earned your bachelor’s after May 2024

If UCLA interviewed around 800 people, and waitlists 250 people, then are the rest who are not Accepted all just straight up rejected (Post-II)? Or does everyone who dont get immediate A’s all end up on the waitlist?

people do receive post-ii R. ucla tends to do it in batches though, and sometimes along with the pre-II R.

Anyone send an update letter and receive a reply back? I sent one 2 weeks ago but I did not receive any confirmation or anything

I haven’t yet. I’m worried they might not be giving any/minimal aid based on what I read in last year’s thread and given all the federal funding cuts but I’m not sure.
Yeah, as a fellow first-gen, Im getting a bit worried too. I knew school wouldn’t be cheap but 400K+ loans ….. 😅 I could sell my parents house and still not have that.

I took a quick look at the sdn thread from last year and it seems like only one person received merit-based aid (pg. 50-51). It was on todays date last year (4/1) and its the only mention of aid I found. They also apparently didnt have the geffen scholarship last year and im not sure where to see if thats also the case for this year.

Couldn’t find much regarding need-based aid either.

If anyone has more info please do share. Does one need to have extremely competitive stats to be considered for merit-based aid (I’m assuming it’s much different process than undergrad) ?

I'm fairly certain that there is no more Geffen Scholarship, that money is gone. I heard that scholarships are going to be more limited and I dont believe there are anymore full COA scholarships. Theres LA Cares scholarship but if you're an OOS applicant I'm pretty sure your chances of getting that is nil.

also what does their anatomy look like? Do they include AR/VR on top of real life dissections/anatomy?

The school was great! The people were alright. I noticed that cliques already formed though so it was hard to meet new people after the first day since some groups were not as welcoming. A few girls were wearing like 20k worth of jewelry and accessories which I was shocked by.
:/

How did you like UCLA's second look so far? Curious what the vibes were at the event today!

I think the school was honestly really good. Like the other comment said some people had formed cliques, but I would say everyone that i had spoken to seemed open to talk and connect. And there seemed to be just about most personalities you can think of, so you can always make a community with those who are similar to you. Def culture shock about the wealth and backgrounds/activities of applicants tho. Upperclassmen were very helpful too
