A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

Hey guys I am having to make a really difficult choice between KCOM and AZCOM. And I think this is the only thing I have found that could sway me back to AZCOM instead of KCOM. The amount of elective time in 4th year.

KCOM:
Critical Care 4 weeks
Primary Care Selectives 8 weeks
Emergency Medicine 4 weeks
ENT 2 weeks
Family Medicine 4 weeks
Medicine Electives 8 weeks
Orthopedics, Neurology or Physiatry 4 weeks
Pediatric Electives 4 weeks
Electives 8 weeks

AZCOM:
Electives (24 weeks)

Obviously I'm not a med student but would this be a problem for when you audition for residency? How many away auditions do people generally do? If it is only 2 or so than KCOM is still fine with me, but if there are people doing 5-6 auditions I'm a bit more skeptical.

Keep in mind KCOM has good elective opportunities for 3rd year too.

Family Medicine 4 weeks
General Internal Medicine 8 weeks
Obstetrics/Gynecology 4 weeks
Pediatrics 4 weeks
Psychiatry 4 weeks
Rural or Underserved Family Medicine 4 weeks
Surgery 4 weeks
Radiology 2 weeks
Anesthesiology 2 weeks

I don't see any electives? Or do I have the wrong curriculum?

It's the right curriculum but those are the core rotations. You also have 8 weeks of electives.

Thank you! So you also have 14 weeks of electives in 4th year as well. That changes everything, looking like I'm going to be KCOM bound 😀

One more kind of insignificant question that may not even matter. Does anyone think being single in Kirksville would matter a lot? I know a lot of med students don't have time for dating etc... but would a single person like me just not "fit in" at KCOM? A lot of what KCOM said is about how friendly they are to families and I'm just worried I would be the only person not married in my class 😳

Just a trivial question though to feed by curiosity; I don't think this will really impact my decision.

I'm a current 4th year and it looks like the curriculum has changed slightly. We didn't have the ENT 2 weeker. But you will easily find time to get all your "auditions" in. You can't do more than 8 weeks of a particular specialty for electives anyway so you need to finagle it a bit.

For example, I'm doing FM. I did a month of sports med at one site I liked, then a month of FM at two other sites. I could have easily done my Peds, Surgery, IM, etc at other sites I wanted to interview at. Its all about making sure people know your face and name. If you rotate through your non specialty at a site, make an effort to go to journal clubs, weekend rounding, etc so the program at least knows who you are.

I did a total of 3 months away. But I have friends who are doing more competitive specialties and have spent July - October away. You still have a lot of freedom with your schedule as a 4th year.

You also have 8 weeks of electives at the end of your third year that you can use as auditions if you really feel like you don't have enough time.

Plus, away rotations get expensive and you burn out on them because you are constantly in a different city/state/area so you can't really pull off that many of them. Hopefully my rambling made some sense. Feel free to ask more questions.

Thanks!! Turns out I was looking at the wrong schedule, toxicwombat pointed me here:

I am confident that 14 weeks of 4th year electives is plenty.

My only other question would be related to whether or not being single at KCOM would be weird? It seemed like everyone at my interview was married, and that most people at KCOM were married, I know that most med students don't date or w/e, but I don't want to be the black sheep if that makes any sense? 😳

Although that factor probably won't affect my decision, just kind of curious about it.

Being single at KCOM would not be weird. There are plenty of "single people" at KCOM... I know depending on the small group of students you meet on interview day, you may get a group of married students- but it is generally about 1/3 married, 1/3 in a relationship, and 1/3 single.

Worst case scenario you can always try your game at Mizzou lol. I kid.

Sort of 😀

Not a problem at all. Plus, there are quite a few HOT girls (and guys, I guess) at Truman State. I promise.

You'll probably be in the minority, but that's the case at any med school.

LOL.

Actually, despite what DocEspana said, I think that golden rule doesn't actually last. People date their classmates anyway. and survive

Haha I may hold you to that promise if I get there and there are not any hot girls 😉

After talking it over with my dad, and some docs I work with I will be attending KCOM, it just seems to be the most reputable DO school around the country and best fit for me!

Great choice 👍

You will love it here

Oh definitely. I can think of one couple (two classmates) in my class.

Any interview invites? I was completed october 18th...still waiting 🙁

I got an II a little over a week ago and I was complete the first week of July 😳 While some people get IIs quick, it could be a long wait for this school unfortunately 👎

Seriously july?! that's crazyyy!🙁

Complete end of August. Still now word.

Keep your fingers crossed -- if you were qualified for SOMA and KCUMB, I'm sure you've got a very good shot here too! I just hope that you hear back ASAP because we're approaching the December deposit deadline.

Yeah I had to email them a couple times to make sure things were moving. Don't be afraid to contact them if you haven't heard anything in a couple weeks. They're very friendly at KCOM!

has anyone been accepted after the two week mark post-interview? I had called and asked for an update on my status and they told me I had yet to be reviewed and that I would be notified next week. I'm afraid this is translation for rejection mail? What do you guys think?

I was told 3 weeks, and I found out the third week.

Phew, after seeing all the one-week acceptances, I thought my chances were slim. That's a relief.

I was sure I didn't get in because so many people heard back within a week... not sure what the difference is, maybe there was a reservation about my app or maybe I was just arbitrarily at the bottom of that list of interviewees. Either way, hang on tight

Yes! All items to this school have been received! Now, I wait to hear back about an interview.

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I sifted through the posts on this thread and didn't find an answer. Does anyone know what percentage of interviewed people they accept (pre and/or post pulling from the waitlist)? Just wondering what the chance is after making it past the II stage! Thanks guys 🙂

I don't have the source that backs it up, but from memory, I remember it was about a 33% acceptance rate for post-interview (not including the number of people placed on wait-list or out of the 12-15 people, 4 to 5 people. Don't stress though, I think you have a great shot there.

Wow that is horrible. Now I'm scared!

Why? I think that's a great chance if you compare it to other medical schools, and it doesn't include the wait-listed people. I got this percentage from the number of people interviewed and the number accepted applicants. Honestly, I don't know if that means that at some interview days, they take everyone because they were all great, if they take no one, or if they regularly only accept 4 to 5 people each time.

I also wasn't trying to discourage anyone.

Withdrew my application and interview invite for 12/6 got into CCOM! Good luck to everyone

Yeah there a a decent amount of people who date within the class, some work and some don't. Just keep in mind, med students are weird/crazy.

Thank u for sharing! In my opinion this isn't that great of a chance when comparing it to other schools, but like you said that doesn't include waitlist so who really knows. I suppose I will just hope for the best come January 😳

Well, I've made my choice -- I'm putting down the deposit and securing my place in the KCOM Class of 2017.

After much deliberation, the only negative I could come up with for KCOM was Kirksville itself, and there's no way in heck I'm letting two years of rural life stop me from attending an otherwise fantastic institution, especially when...
A) I'll be studying most of the time
B) Driving 1.5 or even 4 hours to a city once in a while is not a big deal. At all.
C I love going on long walks while listening to podcasts and Kirksville seems like a good place to do just that.

See you guys in July! 🙂

I heard 2/3, because only 1/3 will actually attend. The chances are on your side!

Yeah I thought that too but, hey, at the end of the day this statistic is utterly meaningless in terms of the interview itself -- just be yourself and enjoy the day. It's really quite welcoming and enjoyable!

Oh. I may be wrong then with my numbers. Either way, we're rooting for you! (Though it does make me wonder if the other 1/3 choose to matriculate elsewhere because they can't handle a rural Kirksville.)

It's like this with every school, not just KCOM.

Kville it self has a lot to do with people choosing other schools over KCOM.

I just received a post-interview hold email. Due to my acceptance at another school, I will be withdrawing my application from KCOM. Good luck to everyone else!

Post-interview hold - what does that mean? Is that a waitlist or does that mean they didn't make a decision? 😕

Yeah, these guys wanted my grades that I am not trying to show them lol withdrew

In the email, they said they won't make a decision on my file (acceptance, wait list, or rejection) until January 21st. It said they had a lot of competitive applicants

Hey KCOM students!

I'm seriously considering a second look at the schools that have accepted me. I want to know if I flew in from California and came to Kirksville, would I be allowed to walk around on campus and sit in on a lecture? More importantly, would there be any willing students who would show me around town and *maybe* let me give me a spot to sleep that night?

I'm thinking about going in December (12th-14th).

Please pm me if you're interested!

Hmmm I didn't know that was an option lol and that surprises me, since you have clearly been qualified to get into multiple good DO schools already. Ah well. Congrats on all your success this far! 👍

Thanks! Congrats on your acceptance at Marian!
