A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You do need your LORs to be complete. As for K Vegas as a town... It works just fine for most people, you don't have time to do much anyways so don't worry about it too much.

Cancelled my 10/23 interview. I tried emailing [email protected] but I don't know if that email is working because I've received "undeliverable" return messages from that email before.

WOW. I interviewed Monday and just got the news that I was accepted!

This school is like the Jimmy Johns of medical schools. Surprisingly amazing and freakishly fast. (I only say surprisingly because I was so underwhelmed by Kirksville but so impressed and in love with my interview day experience.)

The admission's board at KCOM goes through applicants every week on Wednesday, which is why they got back to you so quickly.

That being said, congrats! I interviewed on Friday, and I just got my acceptance call, too!

Lol, that's why I had the metaphor in my head. I have literally seen jj delivery guys sprint out of their cars and that is how I imagine the admissions office is after interview days. Move everyone move move!!!

I received a "Hold Letter" last week.

MCAT: 30P
cGPA: 3.82
sGPA: 3.80

Any ideas of what I should do? And do I still have a chance of receiving an ii?

This is surprising. I would contact admissions and ask what you can do. The only thing I can think is that with your stats maybe they'd think you would go elsewhere over them...

To be honest, I kind of doubt that any school realistically turns a qualified applicant away just because they think the person has stats too high to actually come to their school. Your problem definitely isn't stats, though. None of us can really tell you the reason; every school looks for something different. There are always the general things, like clinical exposure, shadowing, volunteering, etc. that you can focus on. Good luck!

We can agree to disagree on that one lol

I hope this is not the case; I would definitely go to KCOM if I got accepted. I will give them a call tomorrow and see what I can do. Maybe if I assure them that I only plan on attending a D.O. school. As far as ECs, I have done over 1000 hours of shadowing/volunteering at various hospitals in various departments and I was President of a school organization for 4 semesters. This is whole process is really stressful....

I hope it's not the case too. I have heard this being an issue with MD schools - idk if DO schools take the same approach. I was just giving a suggestion, but I'm sure they can give u more info 🙂 I know KCOM is super picky about who they interview.

On a positive note, they wouldn't have put you on a hold list if they had no interest in you at all. I think they would probably see it as a good thing if you contacted them to find out what you can do to get an interview invite. I was put on the hold list too, and they told me it was specifically fall grades they are waiting to see (my sGPA is lower than yours), so I expect they would tell you what you need to do if you ask them, as DrMeows already recommended. Good luck, and don't get too stressed this early in the season! :luck:

You're numbers are far better than mine so I bet the problem is more qualitative than quantitative. When I did my interview I talked with the Department Chair on preventative medicine, and we agreed on everything. It really was a great feeling. Are you showing in your application that you are a good fit for the schools mission? Has your involvement shown a dedication to disparities or communities. I was very dedicated particularly to racial and cultural disparities, which I think helped bump my lower gpa.

If you know in your heart that you embody this, then I would try to find a way to prove it. There is no real way to prove sincerity, but you can always try.

This. There's no such thing as an "over qualified" applicant.

While it may be possible that there is such thing as an over qualified applicant I don't believe 3.8, 30 is that. The stats are good no doubt but there's plenty of students that matriculate into DO schools that have great numbers.

I agree with this. My stats really aren't THAT great; they are only a few GPA and MCAT points above the average matriculant to D.O. Schools. I think if my MCAT was much higher, then I might be "over-qualified" and they would rather not waste time interviewing someone who will inevitably matriculate at another school.

It is tough to express sincerity on an application given a limited word count. I think I would come off my more genuine in an interview. I think my answers to the questions on the secondary were decent and I had a good story to support my desire to pursue an Osteopathic degree.

I guess I'll find out why tomorrow and let you all know.

Rvu rejects people with high Mcat. Many schools reject over qualified applicants. Meow is right.

Well then, I guess we all better know which school we want to go to so we can be sure to keep our MCAT scores at a controlled, low level so as to not qualify ourselves out of consideration... 🙄 I'm not saying it's completely impossible--just really hard for me to believe. But hey, I'm not on an admissions committee, so who am I to talk? 😉

Hey guys, what is the turnaround for KCOM after all your secondary materials have been received?

Rvu rejects people with high Mcat. Many schools reject over qualified applicants. Meow is right.

1) High MCAT =/= over qualified applicant. That's why an application consists of several different sections.

2) Even if they did reject people with a "high MCAT", it just shows that it's not what the school is looking for. If the school is looking for students with a 25-30 MCAT score, then people with a 35 MCAT score are NOT qualified, per definition. It doesn't mean they are "over qualified".

3) "Over qualified" is a relative term for people looking to stroke their ego or justify a waitlist/rejection decision. Different schools accept different people who they feel are the best, most qualified applicants. Since "over qualified" implies a bell curve, you are saying that certain schools are just looking for average (or only qualified) applicants. No, they want the best they can get. Since you can't get better than "best", you can't be "over qualified".

4) What motivation does a school have to reject people with high stats? It's not a waste of time for the school. And, as you should know, med school admissions is a crap shoot. Just because someone has high stats doesn't mean they will be accepted elsewhere. It's in any school's best interest to send out the interview invite if the student meets the qualifications. Why would an adcom say "Let's ignore this really smart guy and invite the average Joe?". Makes no sense.

5) I'm not sure what RVU has to do with anything. They have their own problems. This is the KCOM thread.

I was sent an ii about 4-5 days after they had received my second MCAT Score. I sent them an e-mail a few days after I had sent it from AAMC, don't know if that made a difference

really? wow that's amazing. On the phone, the lady told me 3-6 weeks. Do you have amazing stats?

alright, hope my turnaround is as fast as yours! I just became complete early this morning because I took the MCAT late. hope I'm not too late.....

Hi everyone - congrats to all the acceptances! For those of you accepted, do you have any idea what they are looking for in the applicants? It sounds weird from what people are saying that some on the higher end are not being offered interviews. I am interviewing on Nov 2 and would really appreciate any details if you can. I would love an acceptance! PM me if you prefer that please!

Look at ATSUs mission. That's what they look for.

Loved it. Even Kirksville. And the facilities were awesome. OMM lab? More like OMM auditorium.

Interviews were really laid back, I just hope bombing one, maybe two questions doesn't sink my candidacy.

Haha, I bombed a question or two during the admissions interview. Thought I screwed up and then got a call from the same admissions employee 3 days later.

She asked who I would meet if I could meet anyone in the world. I said Stacy London. Yes, Stacy London from TLCs What Not To Wear. I SAID A FASHION STYLIST.

Oh well, still got in. Now they know I have non-medical interests lol.

This was a tough one for me. I loved the school/campus and thought the interview day was great, but I was from from impressed by Kirksville. Hmmm....
