A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
long time lurker of this thread, but haven't posted till now. I just called admissions and was told the my application had been reviewed but was on hold (pre-interview). i'd love to get an attend here, but i can't help but feel that this does not bode well. I was wondering if anyone had received a similar email/update and still received an interview and even an acceptance or are my suspicions correct? thanks guys

I don't think KCOM does indefinite holds, but hopefully someone can come in and confirm.

Holds are no fun and aren't the best of things... But keep your head up, if you are currently taking classes make sure you update KCOM with your grades and anything that has changed with your app since your first submitted (you do all of this through AACOMAS)

Most of the time when people got that e-mail last cycle they ended up being put on the "accepted pending seat" list, which meant that they could possibly get into the current class or the next. There is a good deal of movement between the 1st and 2nd deposits though, I don't know that it affects the accepted pending list though. Fingers crossed for you.

I got the same email. Such a fear inducing message. Liked the school and town and actually enjoyed the interviews themselves quite a bit. I'm sold on the school so I hope they come around eventually! Wish me luck fellow SDNers, and good luck to everyone else applying.

just got the call! Interview Invite!! aah so excited!!! 🙂:soexcited:

Congrats! The consensus in the group that interviewed when I did was that the interviewers were nice and that the experience was pleasant. Best of luck.

Sigh... that's really frustrating. Oh well, I just mailed in a check.

Anybody interviewing on thursday?

Monday for me. Getting pretty excited! Flying out tomorrow with my wife + baby and staying a few days with some friends in Kirksville. Going to spend a day in Kansas City also so my wife can help me choose between KCOM and KCUMB (if I'm accepted to KCOM). I'm very excited!

good luck!!!! sounds like it will be a fun trip🙂

Interviewed here 3 weeks ago, I was told that I would be notified within 2-3 weeks. Have not heard anything yet. Does this sound like bad news or am I just stressing about it. It's a great school and would love to attend.

I wouldn't worry about it too much yet, I interviewed that same week and haven't heard anything either. The person from admissions that I interviewed with told me that they usually let people know in 2-3 weeks, but with Thanksgiving being in there it would probably be more like 3-4 before we heard anything.

yeah I also heard they were a little behind with the whole process in general, I believe they will be all caught up by next week,

Congrats to all that were accepted I have just completed my file, waiting for an interview. OOS 3.1s 3.1c GPA and 29 MCAT with three years of medial research/corporate software company experience. What are my chances here?

There has been people with your GPA and similar MCAT get accepted already, so if you have good EC's and LOR's then your chances are good as everyone else's I think. but going alone on stats is hard to say, I know KCOM is selective and really looks at everything, For example, people with 30 MCAT'S and 3.6 GPA'S were declined pre-interview. so obviously going on stats alone, is not the best predictor at all.

Definitely 🙂
I was a 2.9 science, 3.11 cumulative with a major in Drama and a 23 and 25 MCAT. They really examined the comprehensive picture throughout my interview at KCOM. Good luck all!

That's funny, the guy from admission that interviewed me told me it is usually two weeks but with Thanksgiving it will probably be three. Oh well, I guess I will just have to wait a little longer. Makes me feel better that you haven't heard anything either.

Good luck tomorrow, abolt! I'm sure you'll do great.

does anyone know about how big the number of accepted students is now? I saw the face book group had 37 people in, so I'm assuming those people are for sure going. How big is the # of students in a class at KCOM?🙂

class of 2016 had (not has, if you catch my drift) 172 when we started

How many do you have now? I can't imagine you lose too many, right?

Also just received another card from an interviewer. Such a nice touch! They are really making this decision hard for me.😳

lol no, we have only lost 2 but they have the opportunity to repeat. they didn't drop out. med school is like prison. once you start, you can't get out.

Thanks mr wombat! If things pan out nicely... that means me getting accepted... I will certainly be your classmate this coming year! I have had the greatest time in Kirksville. I have to say this place is WAY bigger than I imagined from people's reviews. I loved the school I loved the way they've integrated the ipad into the curriculum. I couldn't picture it being really useful. Then I got here and my friend spent about 30 minutes just going though all the apps he uses and how he listens to lectures while going over slides/lecture notes and how he does all this different stuff. Very cool. I love the town! Dr. Halma was my last interviewer and the way he explained it, there's nothing to do in Kirksville, but it's a great place to be doing nothing. So hopefully I get accepted, otherwise it's off to KCUMB for me.

By the way, people that interview on Mondays usually hear back by when if accepted? They told us it'll be a couple of weeks, but from what I can tell on here most people have heard back within a few days? I ask because my deposit for KCUMB has to be in the mail by next Monday 😱

If you notice and scroll up a little bit on this thread, you will see that people who were interviewed 3 weeks ago still don't have a decision🙁 that'd be sad if you had to pay two deposits....

We have lost 4 (2 of those had personal reasons for leaving) with other students that have the opportunity to repeat quarter 1.

i know, i was just counting the two that didn't pass Q1. but you're right, technically 4.

it was more to show that only 2 people out of 172 didn't make it through Q1 through their grades. i see it as a confidence booster to any prospective students that they (most likely) will make it through med school if they work hard (not saying the other people didn't work hard, but you get my point).

my interview is set for Jan 28th🙁 is that too late???🙂 they also have the 24 and 25th open right now but that doesn't work with my schedule. I'm going to call tomorrow to see if I can get an early January date or be on the list :xf:

I don't have a facebook profile (it's not deactivated but entirely deleted) at the moment and was wondering if I am missing out by not being part of the Class of 2017 official facebook group page. Anything good on there? If it is stuff that would be good for me to know, I will (reluctantly) get back onto facebook and break my years of hiatus.

Any word from anyone who has been on the page would be great.

There is a document with pretty helpful information on housing. Other than that nothing to crazy other than getting to see who your classmates are next year.

My gf, a first year like myself, interviewed in early feb.
So while not as ideal as interviewing earlier, there's still plenty of hope.

Thanks! that gives me hope. It's just I saw a lot on the SDN thread from last year that a lot of people were getting the "accepted pending seat" email and most of them interviewed in January, so just wondering how full the class will be by time I interview.....

i would set up an account. it stays pretty active even after you start school. it's not an "official" means of communication, but you can pick up some interesting tips/reminders every once in a while.

While this is true, that is only 2 people on the whole thread and the majority of people that have been accepted from a Monday interview ended up hearing from the school by the coming Thursday from what I've seen on the rest of the thread.

yeah that's true, I did notice that also. hopefully you will hear back sooner then!🙂

Interviewed on 11/15 and got a call from admissions this afternoon.

I interviewed in late january last year and got accepted (no "pending seat" stuff) so it's definitely possible 🙂

Just got an interview because they were waiting for my ochem grade apparently. I have been really excited about this school just based on the history behind it. I just wish it wasn't so late because I already put my deposit down for another school. For those of you who have already interviewed: what were your favorite and least favorite parts about the school?

Just got this e-mail:
Due to the competitiveness of the applicant pool this year, the Admissions Committee has decided to release a decision regarding your application on January 21, 2013. We will be contacting you with the information as soon as the decision is available from the Admissions Committee. Thank you for your patience.

Anyone know what this means? Is this basically a hold?

Kinda. This happened last year as well. Its basically saying that you got a shot. Many people got accepted pending a seat after the "hold". KCOM isnt easy to get into.
Btw, most people with accepted pending typically get in that year. Worst case, youre accepted for the following year.

So does this mean that it's impossible to be straight up accepted after this "hold", and you can only be accepted pending a seat? Thanks for the help.

Interviewed on 11/15 and got a call from admissions this afternoon.

Same here, interviewed 11/16 and received call an hour ago.

Hey congrats! I guess this is bad news for me because apparently I'll be paying a thousand bucks to KCUMB while I wait to hear back from KCOM.

awesome!!🙂 thanks for the feedback!🙂 just gonna make sure I rock the interview so I get a direct acceptance🙂
