A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow ignore all that awesome spelling in my last post. I have multiple TIAs when using my iPhone keypad apparently.

Ooh I called! And a nice lady on the phone put me on hold for a minute while she went to Ask Donna Sparks, and she came back to the phone and told me my file had not been reviewed yet, but they should have a decision in approximately one week. Calling isn't bad, they're nice about it 🙂

ooh right the ambassadors!! that makes sense!👍 I interviewed on jan 28th but didin't recieve that email before hand, still waiting for a decision though, thinking about calling today 🙂

It's not all ambassadors from 2015 and 2016. First off there are no ambassadors yet from 2016, to my knowledge you only can become one second year. Second off......a lot of us are just nosy

That and we also can and do answer questions without being an ambassador, much like on here =)

They might be nice, but are still probably wondering why you called after 1 week when they told you 2-4.

Yeah that's true, but they told me 1-2 weeks in my admissions interview. I also saw on last years thread that when people called, they were given their acceptance status over the phone. Plus, I have two interviews coming up I do not want to go to, since KCOM is my #1 choice. But idk if calling helps of hurts...

Helps or hurts your decision? Probably neither. You're probably not the first applicant to call so soon.

I received a letter yesterday stating I am on the alternate list for only the 2013-2014 school year. I have heard through other posts on this thread that there is little movement on this list. Is that true or just a guess?

Also, some quick interview advice for those still interviewing: don't get too nervous. I was really nervous and stressed a lot of the interview (despite the very relaxed atmosphere they had at KCOM during the interview). I also didn't have a lot of casual conversational points to discuss which would have helped (show them you are an interesting person-talk about hobbies and what you do for fun). Also, some interviewers will be intimidating, don't let that throw you off your game. Stay yourself and have good questions to ask the interviewers (my questions I don't think were very good). Also, stay optimistic, smile, and really know why you want to do medicine, be a DO, and go to KCOM.

The toughest question I was asked: Give one single reason I should be accepted and on single reason I should be rejected.

Let me know if anyone would like more specifics, I know this thread helped me prepare the best I could for this interview so I want to provide the same for others. Thank you everyone for posting interview advice.

Doogy

Trusting God with my future knowing He will lead me where He wants me. Right now its medical school, but only God knows what will happen this coming year.

with regards to DO schools, I just made it more or less official. I'm coming to Kirksville this summer!

Congrats! It's a relief, isn't it?!

Yeah, actually lol. Feels like a huge weight is off my shoulders even though I got into KCOM back in November.

I still have late MD apps out, but I'm not expecting a whole lot from those. Just nice to not be worrying about more interviews and bleeding $$$ (my folks informed me they would no longer be helping me with those expenses once I got into KCOM).

Yes...it can be super expensive. I've also paid my deposit to Kirksville and anticipate that I'll be attending there pending 1 MD school.

Can't really believe I'm already looking for housing YIKES! The goal is to live within 3/4 of a miles of the school.

Yeah I think in a few weeks I'll head up there and start looking myself. I'd like to live real close to campus so bike commuting remains feasible.

For those wondering if they are still accepting people, I interviewed 1/24 and got an acceptance today.

yaay! congrats!!!🙂🙂 glad to see they are still accepting people!!!!👍

Just received an email from Donna Sparks. I have been accepted "pending availability of a seat"! I take it that this is technically "waitlisted"?

Same here, just got an email. Accepted pending a seat. Basically what it says in the email, if a spot doesn't open this year, we are guaranteed a spot next year. Cheers.

yesss I have lol and thanks!!!!!!! I'm pretty sure everyone on this thread know that lol

Looking forward to meeting you and all our other classmates! Make sure you introduce yourself when you join the FB group!

Much more optimistic than that. Definitely deserving of congrats! Congrats to you other accepted as well!

I don't know why, but today seems like it's gonna be a great daaaaaaaayyyy...

Congrats to the acceptances, to those who accepted pending a seat... This is still good news, you still have a good possibility of being in this upcoming class. Hang in there, you will be a med student soon.

I shall!🙂 I'm still waiting to be added to FB group. can't wait to meet everyone in July!!! : D

Do any currents students live in the campus housing unit? Do you guys think that's better than just getting an apartment close to the school? Positives? Negatives?
Thanks!

I live in student housing and I'd definitely recommend it. It's literally a two minute walk to class and you never have to worry about driving (or cleaning snow or ice off your car every morning in the winter). I renewed my contract to live here next year if that means anything to you.

The only downside that I've encountered is that they are older units that could use some upgrades. So if you are looking for some luxurious, new(er) apartment then you probably won't like student housing. However, it is certainly sufficient and the rent is decent (~$400). It's quiet in these parts so you'll definitely be able to get work done if you're the type to study in your apt.

Any questions, fire away

hello all! recently accepted last week! just wanted to say hi🙂 In regards to the housing post, is it most likely gone now?

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😀😍👍:luck:
Glad to here you were accepted dmarie91! Also, great to hear others are accepted! Hope to one day to get the same notice, too.

I don't need anything luxurious lol just something to get by, but this sounds great!! I hope other spots are open 🙂

also, do current students like the Block exam scheduling? does it make you really really really stressed? or is it bearable if you keep up with the work?🙂

alternate.............pretty much the death knell

I'm sorry 🙁 I'm new this site but I thought that there was a little movement from that list? I'm not sure, but I don't think everyone will accept their seat, there might be hope 🙂 also you were not just outright rejected which is good 🙂

I like it. Med school is stressful period, I think that the organization helps though

And I'd rather have one holy crap!! day every three weeks with a little bit of downtime in between than 1-2 exams every single week with no down time ever.

Accepted Pending! Loved KCOM and hope to join you guys in the class of 2017 🙂

Congrats. Hope to see you next year at KCOM

Get housing soon if you havent already. I highly recommend not renting sight unseen. While a few get away with it, it can put you in a bind. If you have any questions, ask.away.

Good to know, I was just thinking about driving up to look at places.

Thanks for the tips (and all the other helpful stuff you've posted!)

I saw there were some posts about passing rates. Do note that schools typically talk about their passing rates on boards, but really it's a pointless stat. Some schools hyper inflate their passing rate scores by blocking some students from taking the comlex, where as some schools rarely block students. Moreover, just because 99% of the student pass doesn't mean you will, or just because 75% of the student pass doesn't mean you'll be in the 25%.
If I had to judge a school based on board related stats, it would be the average scores. Unfortunately DO schools rarely report it and who knows if what they say is true, as no one would really know. I think if anyone is concerned about board scores, it would be more important to find a program that you think you would click with: are lectures you kind of style? what about the curriculum setup? etc.
Anyways, just my thoughts.
Oh, and yes KCOM has had some rather remarkable board scores in the past. I do know they had one random bad year a few years back. Personally I think it's just an anomaly.

I'm gonna second this. If you're looking at their on-campus housing, I'd definitely email them soon. Applications are due on March 1st! Side note: I am still amazed at how it's like 45 bucks more to upgrade from a 1br to a 2br. INSANITY 😱

Wow. Maybe I should drive up next weekend then. The weekend after that I'll be in Columbia for True/False. And well, it'll be March by then.
