A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Two years ago I lived in a building filled with rowdy undergrads (should've expected this though), so the bar is set pretty low for me as far as study environment and neighbors.

Ha well good! Your first block weekend might be a different story when it comes to tolerating noise :naughty:

Great...I just put a deposit down on a new construction place with them. Luckily it's a condo, so there's a driveway/garage...maybe plowing won't be an issue. You've got me concerned about them as landlords for maintenance issues, though. What kind of issues have you had with new construction?

Where did you find this condo? As far as issues go feel free to PM me

Anyone hear anything about 4 Horizons Realty by any chance?

So I've been looking through the "budget" and max amount of loans you can receive (which I will max out)... HOLY CRAP! This is getting real. Total is 77.5K for next year. Makes me throw up to think that none of that is subsidized and the interest rates are outrageous for the stafford and gradplus loans. Basically, if tuition increase is around 2K a year, then I'm expecting that will come out to be about 320K before interest at the end of school. BLEHHHH
:uhno:

Welcome. Best thing is you get nice reminders from sallie mae in the mail every once in awhile on your increasing debt.

Hey VictoryPolka,

Have you gotten a call about moving off the pending seat list yet?

Nope, it's been quiet on my end. I figured the soonest I would hear anything would be around the end of March/early April, so I'm not surprised. I sent a letter of intent about a week ago.

Do you have any insight?

The last deadline should be in a few days, you should start hearing about movement after then.

If this school is your first choice, definitely let them know. Also if you have other schools that have accepted let KCOM know as well. I called them the day i found out that I'd been accepted for 2018 unless a seat opened. I'd already had 2 acceptances and was waiting to hear back from another but told them KCOM was my first choice but that I had to put a deposit down elsewhere (KCUMB or KYCOM) by a certain date. I also told them I was turning down/cancelling the other 5 interviews I had scheduled because I knew that KCOM was where I was supposed to be. They called me back within 2 business days offering a seat for the class of 2017. Good luck! If you do get in and are looking for a roommate i am renting a 2 bedroom/ 2 full bath duplex 5 minutes from campus 🙂

Hey guys, whats KCOM's facebook page?

I can't get to FB from my work so I can't chat it to you, but if you've been accepted, Andrea or someone else in admissions have sent/will send you an email with a link to it. Maybe search your email? If you still don't have it a little later, I'll post it.

Thanks for this post! I sent in a letter of intent about a month ago saying that KCOM was my top choice but I still have not heard anything back about my accepted pending position yet. Anybody else have any luck recently with movement? Would it be overkill to send in another letter of intent?

A friend of mine who is also on the accepted pending list emailed Donna on Monday, and she emailed back saying that there are many people who did nod turn in their deposit by the 15, and they are currently checking in on those people to make sure their payment isn't in the mail. There will be movement soon once they double check everything!

My friend got a call yesterday late afternoon. He had called earlier in the day and told them that he had an acceptance elsewhere and had a deposit coming due but preffered KCOM. They asked if they could call him back so that they could look over his file again. An hour later he got his acceptance call. So, there is some movement already happening. I suspect that there will be calls going out to others shortly.

I'm assuming everyone on the accepted pending list got the email from Donna this weekend? I wonder if this means our chances of getting in July 2013 are diminishing...

How many of us are still on this list?

Yup, got the same message. It sounds like our chances are diminishing as Donna mentioned that the empty seats have been filled for now ... Anybody else still waiting?

I'm pretty open as to whether I get in this year's class or next year's. I have a steady job and it wouldn't hurt to save a little start-up money for next year, if I had to make that choice. It is much less stressful with the knowledge that I will be in medical school regardless.

As an alternate I did not get an email at all from Donna. I wonder if that means the chances as an alternate are even slimmer?

XD

As far as I understand it, they do not pull from the alternate list until the accepted pending seat list is empty. :/ So at the moment the chance is prolly slim to non.Good Luck!

List moved a little. I just was contacted today. Keep up hope. When I had a couple other interviews, some people that were accepted at KCOM were interviewing still.

You were accepted from the accepted-pending list?

Are you for sure going to KCOM?

Yes. Also, if i wasn't I would not say that. They probably watch boards here and there and probably also only accepted one student. Therefore, they would know who I was and what I said. However, that is irrelevant and I plan on sending in my deposit as soon as I get the mail.

Play nice... Don't get too worked up, they aren't going to rescind your offer of acceptance just because you said you were questioning going somewhere else on an anonymous internet forum.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. I was just going to say :welcome: 🙂

+1 to this. 😀

list moved today! my friend got accepted off the accepted pending list this morning!🙂

Greetings

Hopefully this question can be answered by some current KCOM HPSP students. I know the military will not cover the cost of buying, only renting of, a laptop, does any current student know if they were required to buy their own IPAD or did the military cover the cost?

Thank you

Email from Donna yesterday about alternate list.
"As we are getting closer to the July 2013 start for KCOM, I wanted to touch base with you to see if you would like to remain on our alternate list or whether you have already made plans for next year. At this time I'm not sure if we will need to select folks from the alternate list but want to be ready if needed. Please reply to this email or give me a call to confirm if you want to remain on the list or whether we should close your file. Thank you!"

Hi, though I am not a HPSP student I believe I can shed some light on this. In the student budget there is a section that is deemed "Diagnostic equipment". This part of the budget includes our cardiology III stethescope, our welch diagnostic set, and the iPad, ect. There is not a separate category for the iPad alone unlike the separate computer portion. So, since this is now considered required equipment, I believe that it will be covered under the HPSP. "We will pay 100 percent of your tuition, plus we will also pay for required books, equipment and most academic fees..." (http://www.goarmy.com/amedd/education/hpsp.html) If you are still worried about it, I would call the financial aid office for clarification. I hope this helps 👍

Here is the link If you would like to take a gander at this budget I'm referring to: http://www.atsu.edu/financial_aid/documents/KCOMDOFreshmanExpWS2013-14.pdf

I'm trying to find a place with central heat and air, and I would prefer hardwood floors, but I can't really find anything fitting this description online. Where are some nice places to live? I am female and single in my mid twenties. I'd be fine living alone or living in a house with roommates.

How is COL in Kirksville? Pretty low? Are there many students that buy houses instead of renting?

Super low. I know of a few people buying houses. My wife and I looked into it but decided not to because 1) we're planning on being in Kirskville 2 years and didn't want to deal with selling such a short time after, and 2) it just didn't fit our needs. I prefer to focus on school and family and not have to deal with fixing things that break or buying all the things that come with buying a home.

Did you check the 2017 FB group? There are a number of people in houses looking for roommates, you can see if any of those meet your wants.

Hi everyone. I made it into Kirtksville and I was hoping you guys could answer some basic questions for me.
Vaccinations: Do I need any specific medical examinations or vaccinations in order to start class?

Financial Aid: I filled out my FAFSA for ATSU. I assume I just need to contact the financial aid office to get my loan right? Anything special I need to do?

Housing: What kind of places do people get? Anyone have any good leads?

http://www.atsu.edu/kcom/admissions/accepted/immunizations.htm

Has the list of required immunizations. You'll want to get copies for yourself to enter on the form (which you can access via your portal), as well as copies sent to the school.

I think all of us are still waiting for financial aid responses. As far as I know, once you fill it out you'll receive a letter... something like 5-6 wks before school starts.

Check the 2017 Facebook group for housing opportunities, a few people still looking for roommates. Also if you go under the "Files" tab, someone put together a list of places to check out for housing.

Yeah, student housing looked great, but I ended up on the waitlist cause I dawdled too long and ended up signing elsewhere. If anyone's still looking for housing (1br), you can PM me for info!

Has anyone ever heard of any movement off the wait list this late? When I talked to admissions they told me they may have to utilize the wait list this cycle (not the accepted pending). I wasn't sure if all the payments have been made already or not. Not going to hold my breath.

I'm still on the accepted pending list, and I haven't heard anything yet, if that helps.

For those still in limbo with KCOM, I received an email from Donna Sparks this morning. There may be some accepted students deferring, so there may be some spots opening up for July 2013 soon.

Just got accepted off the pending seat list this morning. See you soon, class of 2017!

Hey guys! I withdrew from KCOM a while back and will be having my apartment up for rent. If anyone still needs an affordable (and lovely, since it's brand new!) 1 bedroom apartment, let me know and I'll message you the deets. 👍

Good luck to everyone waiting, and best wishes!
