My fiance just found out she got into both Wright state Boonshofts and UCinn for medical school. We own our home in Kettering (15 min from WSU and 45/60 min from Ucinn) and we are torn on where she should go. We both feel like Ucinn is a better med school but there are many aspects of WSU that we like too (one of those being a much closer drive). We have heard that med school is med school and all that matters is how you score on your boards and where you finish in your class. With that said, it might make sense for her to go to WSU (big fish in a little pond...?) and possibily have a higher ranking in your class.

She also plans/hopes on being a surgeon (leaning towards orthopedic currently).

Let us know what you think.

Thanks

Well hospital wise, Miami valley and University are both level 1 trauma centers. I think Children's in Cincinnati has a lot more to offer. UC is a much bigger school, but both have new facilities. I have shadowed surgeons at Cincinnati Childrens and Miami Valley. I had a better experience at Children's by far. I also go to school at Wright State right now and absolutely love some of the medical school faculty. I can't speak on the behalf of UC's faculty but I am sure they are nice as well.

As far as the drive, I live in West Chester and drive to Wright state almost daily (not fun!)

So if you are thinking of staying where you are at, I would definitely choose Wright State.

Prestige wise, I would check residencies (ortho if that is the current choice!) to see where students were placed. I did just go see an ortho from Wellington two weeks ago. He was a graduate of UC and I absolutely loved him!!! He talked with me for several minutes about medicine and where it all is going.

I asked him if I should go to Ohio University or Wright State and he recommended Ohio university.

I do not know if any of this will help, but I am familiar with Wright state and of course the Cincinnati area and some hospitals so feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

Good luck, I think you will be happy whichever you choose!

UC!
Better city, more oppurtunities, better hospitals.

My reflex is UC...but if you guys don't want to move, then that drive would be terrible to make every day. And med school is definitely what you make of it, people from both of those schools get great residency positions. I mean, we're in the real world now - you pretty much get what you work for.
Also the curricula are a little bit different at UC and WSU...so that might be something to think about. Another thing - class size -180ish at UC vs 100 at WSU I think.

I'm sure you've thought of all of this before lol but hopefully it helped a little bit

Buckeye you are so right. By the way I am waitlisted at both schools. What is the difference in the curriculum? I thought they both were lecture based but are there subtle differences that may fit certain lecture styles over another?

I have interviewed at both schools.
I'll say UC cos it has so much to offer you. As pre-meds, we think our destination is med school but after u have got more than one acceptance, u'll realize u have to start thinkng beyond med school. The destination goes much further and applying to residency is like applying to med school all over. A better med school gets you a better match for residency esp when she is thinking of orthopedic which i gotta confess, is hard to match into. I just checked UC's match list for 2010 and they have like 4/5 orthopedic match. Pls, double check from their site.

But like buckeye pointed out, she cant spend 1.5hrs driving daily when she can be studying. Every Minute counts for a med student. So if you guys are flexible and can move to cinci, she should go to UC.
If not, she shd go to wright state. Yes, med school is med school. But going to specialties makes that statement wrong.

Buckeye, Pls, wats the diff in curriculum?

Also, cinci has four great hospitals including their UH surrounding the medical school. Wright has no UH. They use 7 hospitals and am not sure how the convinience is for rotations.

Hey i just checked 🙂
cinci had 10 people matched into orthopedic. 🙂

UC is the better school if your fiance is interested in research, as they get more funding and more opportunities. However, if your fiance isn't interested in research, the school probably isn't going to matter, so you should probably choose based on location and finances first and foremost and use prestige as a tie-breaker. Medical school is medical school, like you said. The above poster is correct in that the name of the medical school may have a slight impact on residency placement, but I think that he or she also overrates it a little bit, especially when talking about UC vs. Wright. No matter where you go to medical school, you are going to have to work hard to get a residency spot in a competitive specialty like ortho.

It doesn't matter where you go to medical school, if you get a 276/99, and are generally a good person, no one is going to care where you went to medical school you are going to get a slot in an ortho residency. Now of course this score is extremely high, but the point is it doesn't matter where you go to medical school, so go to the school that's more convenient for you and your family, why stress yourself out with all that driving if you don't have to, you will already be stressed enough with school. And then having to make that drive every morning, especially when it snows, you'll be overtaxing your body.

Sorry, haven't checked this thread in a little while. As far as the curricula go - from what I remember, at UC all classes are taken at one time, but at Wright they are more divided into blocks. So at Wright you'll be doing Anatomy pretty much exclusively for 3-4 weeks, then Ethics 3-4 weeks, and so on. (I think Wright has a "Clinical Medicine" class every Friday also that is taken along with each block course throughout the first year.) But at UC, you'll be doing Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, etc. more or less concurrently.
I think this is fairly accurate info, but if not someone please correct me.

The snow is a good point ^^
I did my interview on a terrible snow day, I woke up at like 4 am and had to drive for 3.5 hours from columbus to get there!
