Campbell University (CUSOM) DIscussion Thread 2012 - 2013

Truth be told, I'm so glad I'm a NC resident.

Ironically enough, despite living by both Louisville and Raleigh, I don't really follow college basketball.

That might be a good thing. You won't have any bias when applying to med school. For instance, I will not apply to UK simply because I despise Wildcat basketball and wouldn't attend anyway. On a side note, I wouldn't be able to wear 75% of my t-shirts ever, because if I was seen walking around Lexington with an IU shirt on I would probably be shot (Not an exaggeration, I think it has happened before).

Really? I always saw the "House Divided" flags and thought that was about as extreme as it got.

A lot of people in my old high school loathed UK too. It's ok. XD

I'm not a big fan of Louisville but I am going there to visit a friend next month though. A lot of Jewish people there.... 😀

I lived in a suburb close by, so I only saw Baptists, Methodists, and Mormons.

Have a great time in the River City!

I wasn't allowed to apply to UK for fear of being disowned by my grandpa. Unfortunately there are far too many UK fans here in Cincy...you can spot 'em a mile away though. Tooth to tattoo ratio is the key. 🙄

A friend of mine goes to UoL, and he loathes UK. I know they are rivals, it's just crazy how intense they get about it.

I may start watching college basketball while I'm in undergrad.

I recommend it. 🙂 But you haven't seen college ball until you watch IU play in Assembly Hall...it gives me chills every time.

I'll have to keep that in mind. When did you start watching college ball?

In the womb. My family LOVES college basketball. But I didn't start paying attention until I had to decide between IU and OSU. Guess who won 😀

Haha, that's great.

It's the same way with my family and football. I'm a Ravens fan and my parents love the Patriots. My sister loves Tebow, and my brother doesn't care. xD

so anyway back to med school discussion, anyone heard whether or not federal loans will be available for these new schools?

I know it may be difficult to say exactly, but in years past, typically with brand new schools were the inaugural class stats right around average, a little higher, or a littler lower?

You're awesome. 😀

Anyway, on topic, the federal loans issue is huge... anyone have any input?

Generally they're always on the lower end of stats, but don't expect 3.3-/22- I think a reasonable expectation would be 3.3-3.4/24-25.

Anyone successful in getting email replies from this school?

I think Campbell definitely has the resources to be a great school. My family lives nearby and is pretty 'in the know'...they say there is a ton of donor money and infrastructure support going in to the school.

What I'd like to know is if they're willing to put their money where their mouth is as far as the first class. If they want high stat applicants, are they willing to entice with some bangin scholarships like some MD programs do for their first class? I'm applying, but I'm not sure if I would go without a good incentive, since I'm a pretty good match for some other programs with my stats.

I doubt the new schools are going to offer scholarships above what can be expected at other schools. Not because they're being cheap but just because it's the nature of the economy, even with strong donor support they have to maintain their long term financial health.

I am a non-permanent resident of North Carolina (meaning, I own a house in NC [the OBX] but do not live there year round, but still maintain resident status)... wonder if that could help pull me?

apparently a few people already got secondaries from a few DO schools. anyone get one from campell yet?

Agreed. It could be argued that attracting top students is best for their long term financial health, but they seem more interested in turning out primary care docs. That said, it will be great to see another medical school in NC. The ones we have now may look great on paper, but having sat in on classes at a few of them, it seems they are seriously in need of updating their curricula.

Just got declined for a secondary based on my science GPA, which was 3.2....and they said they require a 3.2 based on their calculations. I didn't waste my time trying to figure out how they came up with something different!

I'm bummed because I would love to go to a Christian med school. Oh well!

lol got declined too. that was fast. oh well.

So weird, I got the secondary and my sci was 3.2. Why not call adcom? Could be a mistake.

I think blackey's was 3.2. Mine was below 3.2. I applied anyway since it was a new school and i didn't know if they were going to be able to uphold that min gpa. buuuut congrats on getting the secondary without any problems! gl

Wow that stinks! Kinda a high science GPA cutoff for a new school in my opinion...

ya that's what i was thinking which is why i decided to send in an app anyway but i guess theyre stickin to it!

Just got my secondary today, but the password Campbell gave me to access their link is not working. Is anybody else having trouble?

did anyone else receive the email that their application was sent to the "pre-screen committee"? wondering if anyone else is in my boat...

Alright, I sent them an E-mail. My science GPA is a 3.26. I'm wondering if they calculated my withdrawal in O Chem (due to a work conflict, as I worked full-time). I did re-take the following semester!

Wow, 10 pages haha. This is a lengthy supplemental. Time to make moves.

ahhh just got an email from them today

"We thank you for taking the time to submit your application to Campbell University of Osteopathic Medicine. Your AACOMAS application shows that you are in the process of taking/retaking your MCAT. Once your MCAT scores are released, please ensure you request the AAMC send them to AACOMAS. ACCOMAS will verify your scores and then forward them to Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine. This process generally takes two weeks. Once we receive your official MCAT score from AACOMAS we will be certain to follow up with you regarding your application status. "

new mcat was rleased the 28th or so hopefully they get my new scores soon so i can get that secondary..

has anybody had a problem saving the blank PDF and still having access to edit it?

has anybody had a problem saving the blank PDF and still having access to edit it?

Yes! I do! I think it's because I have Adobe PDF READER not the full program. I imagine that many people will have this problem, like we did with the password, so at this point, I'm just waiting for another email from Joy Henderson about it. I have a lot of secondaries to fill out and stuff to do, so I don't really want to waste time on the phone about that....
Meanwhile, I'll work on the essays on Word.

Check your science prerequisite GPA and see if it is > 3.2. I have a verified cGPA and sGPA of 3.6 and got placed on hold at Campbell pending my summer retake. I found out that my science pre-req GPA would have been < 3.2 had I not retaken this class. If I do even somewhat decently in the retake, my pre-req gpa spikes to about a 3.4.

My thought is that Campbell is applying the 3.2 screen to the science prereq GPA (intro bio, gen chem, orgo, and physics). I could be wrong, but I do have similar stats to most people in the thread that have already gotten secondaries and this is the only science GPA combination I have that is currently < 3.2. Hope that helps.

seems silly to me that a new school would have a more competitive screen than the more established schools.

Yeah it's strange. If that's not the case, maybe being out of state had something to do with it. I guess I'll just have to wait until my summer class is over to see if I get a secondary.

the password they gave me to access the pdf isnt working

Sometimes new schools try to be more selective in hopes that it will lead to higher board scores in their first few classes.

I didn't take anything BUT pre-req's. My degree is in the Recording Industry. I took my pre-req's post-bacc years later. I haven't heard a response from them yet!

What's recording industry...?

So is the general consensus that you have to have a 3.2 science gpa to receive a secondary? Or could the rejections have been for other reasons as well, like being out-of-state?

i'm out of state.. i'm from texas
i got a secondary.

Oh, okay. I was thinking that it might be more competitive for out-of-state applicants since they have claimed to have preference for NC and southeastern state applicants.

What are your stats, if you don't mind me asking?

Also, congrats and good luck!
