Campbell University (CUSOM) DIscussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just finished Block 1 yesterday, if anyone has any specific questions for us OMS1's... ask away while you can!
And for the record, couldn't be happier with my education thus far!

Now that Block 1 is over would you say that majority are adjusting to workload well and most are doing well on exams?

To be honest it is tough to know about the entire class but I will say that from what I can tell and hear people are making the adjustments necessary and overall I have actually been really impressed with our exam averages. Maybe the one exception being micro
...but we have a fantastic profession in that, Dr. Kuo, who writes questions for COMLEX so we know will be well prepared for boards.

So in short yes, I think most are doing well and making necessary adjustments, which will only improve from here on out. CUSOM has a lot invested to make us succeed so from the admin to the faculty they will sit down with you and make sure you don' t get left behind if you are struggling.

Overall, I think our class is adjusting well. I know several people had to adjust the way they studied from the being of the block to the end. I certainly had to. We (the class) work together to get through the material - many people share study guides for exams, practice questions etc...

That being said, I got Kuo'd on the final. Did worse than I thought I did, but got through it. Micro is the beast of first block for sure.

I think that most professors are waiting for you to ask for help and most are very personable easy to go to when you are having trouble with material and/or personal issues. Several professors held review sessions at the end of the block before our final.

Withdrawing application and interview for November 4th. GL guys!!

This is very good to hear. The support I felt I would get from the faculty is one of the main reasons I have decided to go here.

Is anyone having issues with the CBC and Screen systems.. CBC was fine but when I go to use the OsteoScreen code it takes me to the same forms as the CBC and doesnt give me options what locations I can go to do this

They have the same info that needs to be filled out, I was confused too. Just go through and do both, when you get to the part you have to pay for you'll see they are different amounts. CBC for me was ~100 drug screen was 26. The locations that show up after you pay are in NC, you have to call and get local ones(which I haven't done yet).

oh ok cool, thanks !!

Withdrew my acceptance today- good luck on the application trail everyone!

I am prepping for my interview Monday as well. Is there anything I should bring? I feel strange coming empty-handed....

For the record, the comment concerning dress code baffles me.

Just you in a suit, maybe your own pen although they had plenty of free ones on my day

Withdrawing my acceptance. Hopefully it goes to someone here on the waitlist! Great school, no doubt. 🙂

I personally like to bring a portfolio with a legal pad to take notes bc there is a power point presentation that isn't exactly copied for you although I'm sure if you sorted through the info in the packets you could find it all there, but like I said that's just a personal pref

Just received an email from CUSOM stating they received my primary.

I'd definitely like to see more of this school. Being only the 2nd class scares me a bit, but I have an interest in Rural medicine and love NC. I live in the Southeast and have family there.

I'm going to search for this ... but about how long did it take people to receive a secondary after they received the primary?

And is the school mandatory attendance?

mandatory attendance. 8am to 5pm monday-thursday,as stated during my interview

Thanks for the info. If I have immediate success elsewhere I probably won't complete then secondary here. I don't see myself doing well in a mandatory attendance setting.

Congrats! How many people would you estimate have interviewed already?

Accepted here as well today. Looks like they interview 14 at a time so you can do the math and see how often they interview and when they started interviewing... Hour that helps...

Congrats to all the new acceptances. I hope to see you all in August!

How are currents liking the current 8am to 5pm schedule? TBH, I'm personally not a fan of the mandatory attendance and I know I'll be exhausted after an 8am to 5pm day and personally I'm more of an independent studier and don't get much out of lecture.

Also any current students have any updates of a possible DO/MPH degree? If I recall at the interview, the dual degree would not be offered for another 4 years?

In undergrad, I personally did not attend lectures if they were not mandatory because I could teach myself the material using the book. So, it has taken me some time getting used to it. But it is not as bad as it seems because from 8 - 12 we are in lecture, and generally we have labs after lunch. Depending on if you are in A or B group, we alternate getting out at 330 or 5 for the most part (there are a few days in block 2 where you are there till 5 for anatomy dissection). I will admit I am exhausted in the evenings and have a habit of taking an hour nap. But it really hasnt been as bad as I thought it would be.

Hope that helps

I was told that they are "working on it" but it has not been finalized as of yet. They are hoping to have it available by the Fall of '14 when we start... but told me as of now all they could give me was a strong "maybe." I was told that they'd update me as time goes along... So I can let you know when I find out more.

That would be great man. Could be huge in my decision making process but we shall see how the rest of this cycle plays out. Very excited to be accepted nonetheless!

CUSOM has actually officially stated dozens of times that they are looking to train ER docs and general surgeons as well as primary care. They are even setting up residencies in both of those in the near future as well.

Is the idea that CUSOM is setting up residencies for CUSOM students to essentially be a feeder school into these specialities at NC hospitals?

I speculate yes and no. I think the reasoning seems to be two-fold.

1. CUSOM recognizes that residencies will address doctor shortages in the greatest communities of need because it is not just where someone goes to med school that indicates where they will likely settle but rather where they do their residency program.

2. CUSOM leadership feels a responsibility (as they and every other med school in this nation should) to offer enough residency seats for the number of students graduating... even if the students don't end up filling those particular ones themselves. It is the right and responsible choice for ensuring graduating doctors have access to GME (and this is becoming more relevant every year).

Yeah it's not really a straight 8-5pm schedule. Like my colleague above posted, 8-11:50am is lecture, lunch until 1pm, and then you have lab from either 1pm-2:50pm or 3pm-4:50pm depending on which group you're in. If I have the later lab, then I usually nap from noon to 1pm, study till 2:30pm, then get to lab by 3pm. I'm a self learner as well, but so far this isn't bad at all. Even in lecture I'm not always paying attention. If it's a lecturer I like then I'll sit there and focus. But if it's a boring lecturer, then I'll just study something else during that time and then rewatch that lecture I missed later that day on 2x speed, cut down a 50 minute class in half.

I am trying to find housing, but this is difficult being out-of-state. Can any students point me in the right direction?

Also, I would like to join the FB page if there is one... Can't seem to find it...?

If you want to be as close to the school as possible, check out University Manor, Kivett Townhomes, And Campbell Village Townhomes. Those are all about 2 minutes from the school and less to the undergrad campus.

If you want to be in more of a modern area and not so rural, and don't mind commuting 20 minutes to school, then check out Village at Marquee Station in Fuquay Varina. Gorgeous brand new apartment complex with all your major stores and restaurants nearby. But it's a bit pricey.

Also they said they would update the housing stuff in the online packet thing in december, so we'll have more information then

I was told in my interview when someone asked that they need to get accredited first before going around and changing the degree programs. So after the first class graduates.

Also meredith square townhomes is 4 mins away and I love living here 🙂

Thanks!! 🙂 🙂

I personally found it a bit difficult to find a place that would allow me to have my dogs, but after looking online, I finally checked craigslist and found a great deal on a house (3br for $495 a month) in Benson - about 18 minutes away from campus.

So did you rent by room or for the whole house? I have a dog, too, and see tht some places aren't pet friendly 🙁
