Campbell University (CUSOM) DIscussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Preparing for a 10 hour road trip to Campbell next week, airplane tickets really shot up this week and I messed up by not getting one earlier. I really hope that when I get there I'll be nothing but impressed by the school.

Flying out on Friday... Going to scope out the area before my interview on Monday. I am very excited and looking forward to seeing the school in person.

I have a question about the letters of recommendation--I know a D.O., but he recently graduated med school and is in his first year of residency. I also know several M.D.s; my question is: would it be better to have a recommendation from a relatively "inexperienced" D.O., or an M.D. who has been practicing medicine for years? Thoughts?

It depends on the strength of the letter. You want one that can say how frigging awesome you are, not just that they know you. Mine was from an Md that I have done extensive volunteer work with and some case work. My only clinical experience with him was removing his sutures after a surgery lol. But I also have 12 yrs as a nurse. Anyways, make it strong and make it count.

Thanks! I think I'm leaning toward the D.O.--I grew up with his family.

I highly doubt any medical school is researching the doctors that they receive letters from to find out when they graduated medical school and the extensiveness of their experience. As stated above, you want your doctor letter to come from someone who can really speak to the details of what makes you qualified for medical school. My letter came from a doctor I have worked side by side with for 4 years - we are talking thousands of hours together. We are also very close friends and have season tickets to the Panthers right next to each other so he was able to write a very personal letter. I was lucky enough for him to be a DO as well.

I understand that not everyone is as blessed as I am to have a doctor for a friend, but I would seek to spend as much time with the doctor who will be writing your letter as possible. Whether that be through shadowing or work experience or maybe just buying them a coffee. Make sure they know details about what makes you qualified. Medical schools can sniff out a generic LOR from a mile away. As far as the DO vs MD LOR debate, it's better to get a strong letter from an MD than a weak letter from a DO.

Hey ya'll, I was just looking at my bookmarks and saw student doctor and thought I would say for everyone accepted CONGRATS (you really will love Campbell). I am a member of their first class (currently studying for an integrated exam on Monday,,,, while procrastinating on here). And if you have been wait-listed, keep your heads up 🙂

If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message - like I said, exam on Monday so do not be offended if I take a while to get back to ya. I just remember how stressful it was last year, and would love to help in any way I can. Night

Is the parking lot "to your right as you enter the campus" near the Levine Hall building that we check into? I wish they had an aerial view of where we drive and park. Their PDF map doesn't show their medical school and Google/Bing maps just show a construction site where the school presumably is. 😳

When you drive in building is on your left, there's a parking lot on your right. Real easy to find. There's also parking for students behind the building.

Thanks. Good luck on Monday!

First post secondary rejection. Sigh, I actually had a lot of hope in this school.

Sorry to hear that. If I remember correctly last year CUSOM received close to 4,000 applications and only interviewed about 400 if that makes you feel any better.

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you know I would be happy to answer any questions you have about the school. I'm attending CUSOM and will be doing some of the student Q&A sessions this month. Good luck everyone!

How are classes so far? The faculty I talked to during interviews seemed great, but how are they in lecture? Do you feel like you get a lot out of them or no difference from elsewhere? I realize med school will take up most of our time, but how much do you feel like you study on weekends and nights vs how much free time you have? Is the integrated curriculum working for you?

Thanks for your time, I know you're busy

what do you think really made you stand out at the interview?

Undergrad non-trad major 3.2, first Mcat 21--postbac 3.73 2nd Mcat 26, 10x years exp in hands on healthcare.

Teachers don't change much from undergrad there are good and bad , much more good then bad, the better ones hold the firehose still while you drink... only difference from undergrad is their expectations. They know that you cannot learn everything they give you, but they will test you on everything regardless.

Easier to explain free time: 2hrs/day free time m-f including lunch. 1/2 to 1 free day every other week.

I have 3.7sgpa/ 3.56 cgpa/23 mcat. Over 100 hrs clinical volunteering/ some non clinical. Chances look okay for an ii?

Accepted student packet confirms we have till 11/15 to make deposit and do drug/criminal test to hold our spot

There are no earlier dates?

Relax guys and gals, that 11/15 is just the "pay or lose your spot" to people who were accepted after the first two weeks of interviews. It has nothing to do with when other interviews will be scheduled

Declined my interview invite, so there should be another spot open in September.

Now I'm just curious... Did anyone actually get rejected in the first interviews...?

So I heard North Carolina BBQ is top notch, anyone have suggestions for a place to head over after. I gotta look forward to something after the interview!

Can anyone recommend a good place to eat within a short driving distance of Campbell? I will be staying at the microtel tomorrow evening and will be in need of a place to dine. Thanks in advance!

You can walk over to Waffle House. I stayed at the Microtel and went there the night before.

OzelloPiRat - did you get accepted to CUSOM? How does ACOM compare to CUSOM? What will it come down to for you?

I did get accepted to CUSOM!!! And I also loved ACOM. I wrote a comparison on the ACOM thread. Deal is I love them both and may have to flip a coin! If you want more details here let me know.

You heard right! Unfortunately not a nearby BBQ place that deserves your attention (not even sure one exists) but if you fly into/out of RDU I HIGHLY recommend Hog Heaven in Durham. It is everything and more than you could dream.... seriously

Not an abundance of options but North Carolinians seem to have an obsession with Bojangles. It is by no means healthy but is fully deserving of a guilty pleasure. Their chicken and biscuit sandwiches rule.

Also a new rib/wing place on CU campus in the little plaza by the gas station.

Is anyone interviewing this Saturday the 14th?? I m flying in tomorrow night excited to meet everyone!!

I am! Where you flying in from? I am flying in from Utah via Vegas and will get there late tomorrow afternoon.

NYC I won't be in Raleigh till 10 and then staying at the microtel what about you?

I'll be there next year and my father is from Georgia and he taught me everything he knows about BBQ. I will cook some up and have you over! In return you will share the tricks of surviving MS1

I received my secondary! 🙂 working on it now; Is it acceptable to send LOR through US mail instead of interfolio or the other service?

County Seat in downtown Lillington (5 min from Microtel) has pretty good food and decently priced beer. Waffle house and Campus Grill are good also. Don't go to the sports bar and grille right next door to the Microtel though, last time I went food was TERRIBLE. But maybe it was just a bad day for the cook.

I will be staying in the microtel but should be there quite a bit earlier than you as I just landed in Raleigh.

So to everyone who was accepted, are you for sure going here? I am definitely going to send my deposit, but am still going to interview at Nova and hopefully Marian and Chicago(close to home). I just want to see other schools before I settle in, even though CUSOM was awesome and I doubt other schools can hold a candle to its facilities.

I'm 99% in

Hold that deposit then. It's not due until Nov 15th. Why loose it? Hopefully you can interview and hear back from the other schools.

Got accepted to ACOM! Now I have a very hard, and exciting, decision to make!

Congrats! But my nova interview isn't until oct 15th, so I don't think I would hear back in time, no word from the other two schools yet so not banking on them.

Ah! Got ya. Unless you are in live w S. FL or have family there Nova doesn't hold a candle to what CUSOM is offering on almost all levels. I still haven't heard back from them and that was a week before ACOM.

Please elaborate! I am interviewing soon at CUSOM, waiting on the post interview answer from Nova and accepted Lecoms. I am very excited about CUSOM but would love to hear your thoughts on exactly what makes it special and a cut above. It's good to have these hard decisions!!!
