Campbell University (CUSOM) DIscussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know when Campbell contacts students with an invitation to submit essays for scholarships? Has anyone who has been accepted received an invitation yet?

I submitted an essay for the Dean's Scholarship Oct 15th and was recently told that I have been accepted to receive it :]
I was also one of the first groups to interview so i'm pretty sure more will be coming out soon!

Sadly, I am ultimately going to give up my spot at this school. While I am impressed with the facilities, especially the entire floor of simulation labs, I am struggling with the concept of a rural and religious area. Religion was brought up several times during my interview and I sadly have several facets of my life that are contradictory toward their baptist beliefs. Thus, I am concerned about treatment from both faculty and students. In addition, the area although only 1 hour from Raleigh is still in the middle of a small community. In truth I believe that any medical professional wishing to expand their knowledge and training would learn significantly more from urban sites. Rural communities offer a different level of training but most of which would be naturally included into urban centers. I love the fact that they take care of their students, ie. the laptop/ipad I am still leaning toward my acceptance at ATSU SOMA. What does everyone think about this and was religion was hammered into your interviews? Would you chose ATSU over CU-SOM if you had the choice. I would love your feedback.
Not sure who you interviewed with but 1 of my 3 interviewers brought up religion twice in my 30 min interview and although I wouldn't say he/she "drilled" me with questions it definitely didn't feel like a comfortable/smooth discussion as the other questions were

Just added this school to my primary a few days ago. Received an email today that they got it and would let me know in two weeks about a secondary. Hoping to see some love!

Hi, I got rejected before the secondary from CUSOM I'm wondering if it is cause I applied too late or is there any other reasons. I am a Canadian and had my application verified on Oct 28. I have a cgpa of 3.85 and a MCAT of 31. Thank you
Yeah, I am from GA with a 3.4cum/3.3sci/31MCAT ---rejected pre secondary,

Kinda feel ****ty to get rejected before secondary eh?! I guess I have one less secondary to pay for lol!

Cancelled my interview on 11/11. Hopefully someone can reschedule for an earlier date.

If you, like me, need to be away from distractions and in an optimal study environment (i.e. quiet, no traffic, nice scenery, open spaces), then a rural location with a city 25 minutes down the road is perfect.

This is one of the main selling points for me. I have ADD like nobodies business and if there's too much going on in some exciting town I'll be more likely to skip studying and head down to the pub. Peace and quiet and beautiful scenery equals perfect place to buckle down the first two years and get it done. Also, regardless of whether youre a christian or not, the vibe I got was very accepting and much less hostile to alternative thinking and beliefs than any secular college/university I've attended. I am still incredibly worried about the the two dismissals within two months but I digress. Deposit is in and I'm excited to be a camel. Should make for a good deal of hump day jokes.

I have an interview 11/12/13. I am staying at the Microtel Inn! Message back if anyone wants to meet up the 11/11/13 in the evening.

Just so you know.... I flew down from Jersey in October for an interview and went to the bar next to the Microtel for dinner the night before. I would more than recommend County Seat ( we went for lunch after the interview-dairy allergy and couldnt eat the pizza) better bar and food about 5min from the school.

Cool thanks! I will definitely try that out.

Interviewing on 18 Nov here and I am very excited. Anything I should know about this school that is unavailable on the Internet? I really want to knock their socks off.

My stats are 3.62c, 3.85s, 24mcat, 10 years military.

Thanks in advance!

To be honest, I didn't know too much about the school. I just walked into my interview excited to have the opportunity and asked them about their journey to Campbell, their role in the school, what they hope to improve as the next class starts next year following their questions. Obviously it worked since i was accepted. Good luck and just be the most positive version of yourself hah😀!

I submitted my application to AACOMAS a few weeks ago and I'm still in the "Processing" state. I just wanted to put my stats out there and see what ya'll think
Attended Wake Forest University for undergrad with a 3.06 gpa (majored in Chemistry)
Attended the University of South Florida for a Masters in Medical Science with a 3.32 gpa
MCAT 27 (9's on all three sections)
1st generation college student, lower socioeconomic class, born and raised in a rural NC city in Rockingham County. I would appreciate any input as I really want to go here!

Do we update CUSOM with classes we are taking?

So I am on the waitlist and I really want to attend this school. I am not taking anymore classes so I have no academic updates to send. My MCAT is high enough to not re-take it. I have no other ideas to make me more appealing to them other than additional physician letters, and I'm not sure they will take those. Any other ideas?

I would write them and really let them know how much you want the opportunity to attend you seem to have a genuine interest in the school and what about volunteering some more hours? I do wish you the best and hope you get accepted

I sent a letter of intent earlier in the cycle, pretty much right after I got waitlisted. I was trying to score some early points. Im hoping to be published before January but im not sure if it will get done in time. So no additional letters of rec? Ill have some more volunteer hours but not a great deal. Ill just keep updating them with anything I can.

For those of you who have submitted a deposit and associated documents did you receive an email that everything was received? I know that Joy sent an email out last week stating that you would get an email if you were missing stuff. i just wanna make sure I have everything in haha

Could you maybe call and talk with admissions and talk to them from what others have said on the post they seem to care about the students and with volunteer hours that can help I think you have a great chance and seem to really want to attend I really wish you the best.

I got an email saying that they received the deposit and would give your information to the registrar's and financial aid office once they have the screenings too. Since I was contacted by the financial aid office I assume that everything needed for now is in.

HELP!
I have been notified today that I have been accepted to a second school... Im pumped, but am now in a bind on how to choose between schools (CUSOM vs. WVSOM) . Its a great dilemma to have I realize and I hope to not come off as arrogant, im just torn and need advice. Unfortunately DO deposits are too expensive to delay a decision.

I have seen some discussion on how to choose (location, curriculum, etc), but any more insight from others would be greatly appreciated too! Anyone interview at both schools or know more about either that would sway my decision? Also, any current students at CUSOM have insight as to how they ultimately chose CUSOM over all other acceptances?
I REALLY loved both schools - so torn!

Last year I applied late and interviewed at both CUSOM and WVSOM. Although CUSOM is a newer school, I definitely wanted to attend there much more than I did WVSOM. My biggest gripe with WVSOM was that they seemed to be stuck in the past. When I interviewed they seemed to really proud of their anatomy lab and said many newer schools have modeled their labs after WVSOM. While it's true most of the newer schools that I visited in the last year had anatomy labs that were similar to WVSOM, they were also better. Other interviewees had concerns about their curriculum and they basically said "this how we've been doing it and it works for us". Some people will like their techniques and their track record, but I guess to me it feels like WVSOM, while a decent school, is becoming stagnant and starting to fall behind. This year I didn't even apply to WVSOM.

Thank you very much for your thoughts! I am curious as to what you mean with the interviewees concerns with the curriculum?
From what I understand each are System Based and probably are relatively similar. No?

Also, I do agree with the anatomy lab things you brought up. They did boast about how all schools use their system, but I thought CUSOMs was much better. Thanks again!

Can anyone tell me if your primary is placed on hold is that basically like a rejection?

I interviewed in the first group. Just received confirmation today that my deposit was received.

Congrats! When were you complete?
I got the "your file is complete and ready for final review..." email on 10/28 and before that the "your secondary app is complete..." email on 10/7

Could you get involved in any volunteer outreach program? CUSOM has a heart for mission work, which could even mean local stuff! Just a thought...

No it is not like a rejection. I am a current student at CUSOM and finished my secondary last year and was told that they did not want to offer me an interview yet, but they did not want to reject me. I sent them my post back grades in December, and received an interview invite for early January. So do not give up hope 🙂

Thank you! I am still in the process of some classes and hope to get a secondary if not then I hope next cycle I appreciate the reply🙂

So how are the M2's years going? Has anyone M1 or M2 gone on the medical mission trips yet?

Oh yeah, whoops well how are the M1s doing?

It's going great so far..but I'm starting to realize that I'm in med school now haha...workload drastically increased this block with physio, anatomy, and path... We have our 2nd block exam tomorrow so stress is at an all time high among the students.

So far we've only gone to the local migrant farm camp for our medical outreach. The Dean was telling us, though, he's trying to set up an overseas medical outreach to Machu Pichu, Peru for this winter break so that would be pretty exciting.

Edit: No mission trip this winter break 🙁 too soon. But for sure Spring Break (Honduras I believe?) March 9th - 16th. Should be awesome.
