Got accepted off the waitlist today... Really liked the school and its a tough decision between here and tucom-ca. Any input?

Tucom-CA is established and has a match list.

CUSOM still hasn't graduated a class.

It's been said many times, but I'm a firm believer that where you go doesn't necessarily impact you in the end, and it's more what you make of school. Especially as a DO.

With that being said an established program can still be the better option. May want to look into clinical rotation sites and such. Then you're comparing objective pros and cons.

Then there are the subjectives; Location, which do you feel was/is a better fit, etc.

Sometimes you can argue that the subjective pros and cons will hold a larger weight on success because if you aren't happy or aren't comfortable your chances of success will be decreased.

I personally chose CUSOM for more subjective reasons. I have close friends in the area, it was a geographic area that I was somewhat familiar with and wanted to be in, plus the connections felt with interviewers and the facilities are top notch. (Any of the newer school will be/have great facilities and forefront of technologies as compared to older schools, easier to build new then upgrade old)

So good luck @DOC2B311 on your choice and success at either institution 🙂

Did he say he received a top 10 ranking?

He did not, I was assuming he would have been in the top ten for at least a little while.. unless there was a quick surge of WL movement. I just haven't heard of anyone getting a top 10 placement yet, so I was just fishing for evidence as well as some idea of the rate at which the WL has been moving.

I never received a ranking and to my understanding they have not been sent out yet and are still in the process, they just told me a seat opened up and wanted to offer it to me. the last waitlist update email i got was over two weeks ago... Interviewed in mid April so not a clue as to how long the waitlist is.

@Luvshok thanks for the input, decided to give up my other acceptances and will be attending Campbell. I just had a good feeling there and felt like it was a better fit for me also.

Did you post in the FB group?

Does anyone know how LGBT students are treated here? I know it says that the school is based on Christian principals. Has anyone had any problems here?

If anybody knows anything about middle tier candidates being accepted off the waitlist, I'd really appreciate hearing about it

The main university is decidedly baptist but even they have an lgbt student club. The med school is declared non-sectarian. There aren't any proselytization attempts and a number of staff are openly christian but it doesn't mess with daily life. There will be prayers and religious references at the big ceremonies because the university president/staff come and they are baptist...but that's no more than you'll get from patients in the south.

If you are cool with the religious people being religious and just want them to be cool with you.....you'll do just fine. If hearing anything religious is troublesome to you then you will be troubled a few days a year.

I will say regardless of where you go if you are in the second category of people I listed above, it might be time for some self-reflection on tolerance.

*edit....if you matriculate here and experience anything improper, you can pm me and I'll get it addressed for you

Perfect! I have no problems with any religions. 🙂 I was more wondering about whether they would kick you out for being openly gay, or do anything (such as not be willing to help you with your studies or boards, etc) if they were to find out. I'm glad to hear that is not the case! Thanks for the reply!

I would imagine that if anything like that even came close to happening at any medical school (even, dare I say, LUCOM), it would be a lawsuit waiting to happen, let alone I'd think COCA would be all over that like white on rice. Or at least, I would hope they'd be...

My friend is on the top ten of the WL and hasn't been pulled off yet. Hopefully soon.

I didn't realized they had finalized the ranking. If you don't mind me asking, when was he notified of his position?

It was a couple weeks she told me they said she was in the top ten of the WL.

Cool that they've started pulling people off after the May 15th deposit deadline for accepted students. I also didn't receive any notification regarding ranking. Maybe the "High Tiers" we have here on SDN are not a very good representative sample of the waitlist pool 😀

For anyone who was wondering about the 'top 10' designations, I called admissions recently and was told that they're only doing tiers. So there never was nor will be a top 10 designation.

I am top 10 according to Joy 🙂

Yeah weird.. My most recent post reflects a conversation I had with their admissions team mere minutes before posting lol who knows, transparency is not a common variable in med school admissions. I'm happy for you though!

You're high tier as well?
I'm just nervous... I gotta move my kids and husband across country for this and the timing is cutting too close.

Yes. And that's tough, I don't have a family but I'm not moving alone so I can relate. The wait list is definitely better than a rejection when you are without other acceptances, otherwise it is more like a curse. Minimal transparency and completely unpredictable.

Got the call this morning and they have given me 48 hrs to decide with my paycheck. Previously turned down KCOM, have a seat at MUCOM, and now CUSOM is pretty enticing with their weather, and rotation areas.. Best of luck to you all.

AWESOME!!!! Let us know what you decide. I flew my husband out to NC today to find us a place to live and I'm still waiting to get off the WL! I'm glad to hear the WL is moving 🙂

Glad to hear that the wait-list is moving. Holding my breath and keeping my fingers crossed.

if anyone is currently on the "high tier" wait-list and would want to start looking for a place to live PM me

Sorry for the third post in a row but just got the call this afternoon!!! I'm in!! Will be accepting of course.... I am just THRILLED.

Holy crap I'm so stoked for you!!! I'm also high priority. You are #5!!! My husband is there right now looking for a house, we found one 20 mins away from the school.

Congrats on getting in!

high tier as well here... so anxious haha. hopefully we all hear some good news 🙂

I recently had a conversation with admissions where they stated, "Movement on the waitlist is currently slow. However, we do anticipate more movement in the near future due to schools will be notified of students with multiple deposits and they will be contacting these students with a deadline to make a decision. " I thought only MD schools were notified of multiple deposits?

I don't know if DO schools are notified, but the MDs notifying does produce movement in the DO universe....there is a lot of overlap in applicants
