At MSU you get to pick 2 blocks where the admin isn't allowed to schedule you for anything. Some people used this for specific externships they wanted, others to have a vacation date set in stone.

Aside from that, there was so much shuffling and trading back and forth, that alot of people were able to make very drastic changes from their initial schedule.

I'm always open for questions @finnickthedog !

how long are the blocks?

That's what I thought. There's something cool at OSU but it's 2 or 4 weeks so not sure what I would do with that?

If they don't offer 3 weeks then you're allowed to do 2 and basically get the third week of extra vacay is my understanding (you just can't purposely take 2 weeks to get extra vacation... it has to be because they don't offer 3 weeks).

Alternately, you could do the four weeks and just schedule a vacation block before or after the 3 week block.

I think. I'm still in a state of confusion for the most part.

Here we have the ability to divide off site weeks up at more than one place, idk if you guys do.

Or this? I think this was vaguely described as an option for us too?

The good news is you should have the opportunity to ask plenty of questions when they get around to talking to your class about this stuff.

Yeah you can do 2 week externships no problem. What you can also try doing is taking 2 externship blocks (VM611) back to back and setting up 3 - 2 week externships, or externship - 2 weeks off - externship. Just don't try selling it to admin as the latter case lol.

UIUC uses 2 week blocks, with 3 free elective blocks and 4 off blocks that we can use for whatever.

So are y'all able to do externships in your vacation blocks or is that not allowed? Like I'm sure you'd want a break at some point but if you wanted to fill up some of your vacations with externships would that be allowed?

At UIUC we can. They just won't count for any sort of credit. If I get an externship at my hometown zoo, for example, I would need to use off blocks to go because I've already filled my free elective blocks with other zoos. I wouldn't turn any paperwork to the school other than my request to have those dates off due to having scheduled something. Otherwise, the school doesn't care

We are encouraged to use them for that or job hunting.

On a side note, the doctors at work voted to hire me! I should have a contract later this summer.

Well I think three more weeks of school, but we have an extra week tacked on for the two year cumulative so that's great. I don't even get a break because the school research starts the Monday after 😡

That sucks. I’d die if I still had another month but you got this Lololol. I feel ya. I start research quickly too.

Hey 21 Fam, a friend is doing international externships and would like suggestions on housing around the Royal Veterinary College in Edinburgh around January 18 through February 5th of 2021. You're welcome to message me if you know the hook ups! 🙂

I had nothing to do today so I was reliving a bit of the past by looking up old posts/conversations I've had on here. I stumbled across this gem and almost died laughing. This was me, in May, before starting vet school...

I also know that I'm going to want to attend the actual lectures for the most part

And now I don't even remember the last lecture I went to because I skip almost all of them even if I'm literally in the building at the time. Most of the time I don't even watch the recordings because I prefer to read the material instead of listen to it. Oh, how things change in 2 years.

Then she told me wrong. Lol

If you end up at RVC then you could rent a room on campus by the week in townhouses and flats. And many 5th years rent out their rooms when they are on EMS so it shouldn't be heard to find somewhere.

This was me the past month. I felt so much better physically and mentally when I let myself sleep in. And watching lectures from home is so much more relaxing. I don’t need to wear pants or wash my hair or get out of bed. As a plus, my grades somehow improved by being a lazy slacker.

Except for today. Today I feel like I got a 0.5% on the exam. Good times.

She's going to the school in Edinburgh, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. lol. Just confirmed.
