Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So apparently during clinics I have to vacate my locker every time I'm off campus for an externship or vacation and then pick a new locker when I come back (unless, I guess, the old one is still available). This sounds fun. Except that it doesn't.

Do yall not have enough lockers to accommodate all 4th years?

The locker rooms were literally just renovated this summer so I can't imagine there's a space issue.

Plus I dont think this was the policy before bc I think the lockers used to be assigned. So I really don't know why they think this is a good idea.

Soooooo....... take this suggestion with a grain of salt cause I don't know how hard core your school will be with this. But I would just leave my stuff there. Unless they're going to have locker police checking every week, they will never know.

Yeah, I'm not sure. We have to email them with the locker we've chosen and then are expected to email them again when the locker is empty. So... I don't know how much they're going to be following up on that but they might.

I wouldn't have an issue if they wanted people to empty their lockers if they were going to be away for like multiple rotations in a row. But the idea that I'm expected to empty my locker for 3 weeks even when I'm coming right back to the hospital afterwards is annoying.

Agreed. The point of having a locker at the hospital is for it to be your locker. Especially if there are enough to go around

Or you price your C section at $1,000,000 or whatever and ain’t nobody want to pay for that 😀 (we just tell people no.)

These same ****ers are usually going to be selling these deformed inbred mutts for $800-2000 each (esp the ones who insist you not spay them at the same time), so I don’t take kindly to the crocodile tears. I feel bad when people have animals with acute issues they can’t afford cause I get that not everyone has $5000 to spend on an animal they didn’t expect to get sick with a treatable condition. But the dystocia? That’s totally preventable and 100% the owner’s problem.

We had a woman at my old clinic with like 15 Frenchies who would always claim the males "accidentally" got out with the unspayed females 🙄🙄

And then she would wait for-ev-er to call us and would always act shocked when the bitch needed a c section again...

Also, none of them were house-trained. Because of course not.

Yep, I feel the same way. We had a dog come in that the owners AI’d at home. Roughly 35 days later, has a raging pyo and is in pretty critical condition. Owners refused to spay the pyo, they left AMA and were determined to stick penicillin pills up the vulva and make it go away that way.

(How they got penicillin is beyond me but that 1 year old dog’s very likely dead by now.)

I spent 3+ hours today learning about how we should suggest enrichment ideas during annuals and how raw food is bad. Like, I get it, not everyone has the same background experiences, but we're in 3rd year and if someone needs to be told at this point that obesity is a problem in pets or that feeding raw has 99 & 1/2 problems, then yikes.

What I wish we had learned instead was how to deal with the above example of "I got illegal antibiotics and am treating my deathly ill dog like a human yeast infection from the 1980s" lady.

To be fair I'm not sure how much of crazy kung fu can be taught without just exposing you to the unfiltered crazy itself. There's only so much general advice that can be given for stuff like this and the rest is mostly the nuance of how to navigate the human interaction component of those appointments imo. A lot of what you can do (if you're getting at whether you can withhold the animal from the owner etc) is probably going to depend heavily on state laws too

The biggest abscess I’ve ever seen was from someone who gave their dog injectable penicillin in the same spot between the scapulas with the same needle for 2 weeks. That was an overweight pug with roughly a softball sized abscess between the scapulas. One of my first weird clients.

It also had CHF and a cough of 4 weeks duration, so they were syringe feeding it a mixture of children’s Robitussin and honey.

Was the class about handling client interactions in discussing these things? Or just facts about these topics? I will say there are plenty of pro-raw vets out there for whatever reason... so maybe there is a reason for the topic. And discussing obesity and diet is really an art, and can be difficult to do if the goal is to get the message out and end up still being likeable to the client at the end of it.

Totally state/local jurisdiction dependent. Around where I am, this would be easy. I have very responsive state animal cruelty officers who would be all over this. The dog would either be taken away, or the owners would be prosecuted. I’m a mandated reporter, and the authorities are good about following up. When stupid clients passive aggressively mention how they would just shoot the pet at home to guilt trip me about cost of care, they are quite taken aback when I tell them I euthanize at no charge or help them find a rescue for the pet that will assume responsibility so I can help the patient if that’s what they really want to do with this treatable condition (they don’t), but since they’ve mentioned it and I’m a mandatory reporter and what they’re saying is a felony, I will be calling the authorities if they leave AMA to do a welfare check on their pet and they may also be able to point O to resources. I say it respectfully and matter of factly, and I haven’t had people get mad at me. It usually shames them enough to calm down and actually make rational decisions.

Preferences my clinical year electives today, and I found my first externship today!

I’m going to have 6 2-week externships. I want to do 1-2 in DFW, 1-2 at another university, and the rest at locations that sound fun!

So if you currently attend an academic institute, I might be able to meet you some point next year if I end up at your hospital!

Come to OSU!

But I’m already at OSU!!

😉 I know what you meant, but I had to take the opportunity.

🙄 *THE* OSU.

And to think, I almost wrote “tOSU” but thought to myself that cdoc knows what I’m talking about...

Week 1 of school done. Was feeling a bit nervous but better now... as long as I can plan things as far as studying I should be fine! Going to a national lab animal conference in Denver to present a poster during October. Starting to solidify my externships and off campus blocks then hope everything goes smoothly with my school approving them and the dates. Overall I really like my lectures and find them easy to listen and pay attention to!! Truly look forward to going to school.

My mom doesn’t want me to go to Tufts for a 2 week externship because “I’ll come back talking with a ridiculous accent”

y’all I can’t make this **** up
AND I’ll preface with, these are not hard and fast regulations, like if I want to go, I can go. She just won’t like it.

She wants me to go to University if Tennessee because they “have a good fight song”. Can’t go to Penn because Penn is in Philadelphia and the Eagles are there and that’s bad.

She’s allowing D.C. as long as I don’t become a Capitals fan. Wants me to try to find one in Hawaii so I can go to the beach.

I didn't know I could change my accent that easily. Brb booking an externship somewhere with accents that I like.

Oh my.

You’ll likely run into maaaaybe 2 people with a Boston accent while you are there for 2 weeks. It’s actually pretty rare to run into it unless you are interacting with regular town folk, and even then highly dependent on what town/city you are at. Not that common around that part of MA.

And what the heck is wrong with becoming a Caps fan?!

If you come to DC, lemme know 🙂

Ah! That’s interesting to know! Thank you!

My mom is a die hard Stars fan. Season tickets, goes to just about every home game, etc. So the concept of me liking another team, when I’m not that enthusiastic about the sport to begin with is pure blasphemy.

For example: Mom has made it a mission to go see the Stars play at every single stadium in the NHL. She’s gone on three different road trips with the Stars that she wins at casino nights, and she’s getting up there. When we were in DC on vacation spring break 2017, we had to go see them play the Caps.

And thanks TRH! On Monday, they’re telling us how to pref dates and stuff like that, and I’ll be actually able to reach out to Friendship for a 2 week externship! I’ll let you know!

I can teach you Rocky Top 😉

Not the verses though, I don't know the verses
but! The verses!!!

And I think I’ve been able to narrow it down! I have 6 externships, and I’m going to do Illinois and Tennessee! I’ll also be trying for one in DFW, Friendship in DC. And that leaves 2 more fun ones open that I have to brainstorm after my surgery exam on Tuesday

I’m jealous. We only get 6 weeks total, and I’m going to have to use 2 of those weeks so that I can rotate through all three surgery sections (ortho, st, onco), so that really only leaves two offsites...I’ve scheduled one so far (the place I *really* want to go), but am still trying to decide on my second offsite.

What rotation are you planning to do here?

They JUST changed our fourth year curriculum so we get more electives, so we get 6 standard weeks of externships, with the possibility of taking up to 6 more!

I’m not sure! The visiting student website is painfully vague for small animals, so I really don’t know what’s available!
Ah may depend on when our students get their schedules settled. I've seen externs on most of our small animal rotations though. So you could probably do pretty much anything as long as they can fit you in.
