Class of 2022...how you doin'?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone wanna teach me how to read an ECG in like 10 mins? no? no takers? ok...😳

Lol you get a break between quarters

I feel like that's pretty normal for schools on a quarter based system. We go pretty far into June... it would be ridiculous to expect us to go over 6 months without a break lol

I think the schools that don’t get a break between quarters are semester schools that break the semester into two. So not a true quarter system school like Oregon State.

That makes sense, I guess. But doesn't everyone/most schools have spring break anyways?

Yeah, but I know with Illinois ski’s said they start the next quarter right before their break. So it’s the same time between Winter and Spring break basically for both of you, they just move on to the next quarter before break.

Tbh I miss the quarter system. I went to a quarter school for undergrad and I liked having nothing to worry about during spring break cause we’d just had finals

I went to a semester school and as of right now, I like quarters. Since there is SO MUCH material, it's nice to have finals that only cover 10 weeks of material instead of 14. I may change my mind when I'm in school far into June though. But tbf, you can't rely on Oregon to have nice weather until the 4th of July so prob won't be missing much lol.

Edit: realized that I didn't address the "we won't be expected to just look at an animal and know what's wrong". Very true! We also won't be able to move around their insides the same way we do in anatomy, if at all. We also won't have the isolated tracts or hearts or any of that. So anatomy doesn't really lend itself (at least in our curriculum) to translating to medicine directly. It's just purely so we learn the structures.

Pathologists 😉

I feel stressed about my one class and then I come here and realize I have it pretty easy compared to you vet school people. I hope exams and studying are going well!

Last week was hellish (an epidem take-home due that monday, 3 actual exams, two of them scheduled for the same day due to an unnecessary but much-needed snow day, and one of those gut phys quizzes), but the ZEW wet lab this weekend was cool 👍

We don’t get a break between first and second quarter first semester though. 12 weeks from the beginning of school until thanksgiving.

But that’s what I’m saying 😛 you’re a semester school that splits the semester into two, so you have to same breaks as a regular semester school, even though Illinois calls them quarters. A true quarter system school it’s typically Septemeber to December, January to March, and then March to June for the academic year divisions.

That’s a trimester, yo 😛

Well I know there are some letters of the alphabet in there, though I've always kind of wondered why they chose QRST and not like...MNOP

I personally would love to give block scheduling a try after having 16 week semesters and 8 week quarters. 2 or 3 weeks of only one or two subjects sounds bomb.
Shhh keep your voice down, the Davis people will show up and start bragging :ninja:

that would've made it so much easier

the idea of learning gross anatomy on a block schedule literally makes me want to vomit

Typically anatomy isn't taught as a block on its own but integrated into the other blocks. So you learn neuro anatomy in the neuro block, cardiovascular anatomy in the cardio block, etc etc.

Since it would be the only thing I would have to worry about, I think it would be way better than our 24 weeks we get here. But the grass is always greener on the other side.

yeah because then you could look at an ECG and just say "MMMMNOPE" and be done

Also there should not be that many M's, that means you've got atrial fibrillation. And who put that E in there???

Your semesters are only 12 weeks long?! So you only have 24 weeks of classes per year? 😱 I must be missing something
And 12 weeks uninterrupted is not that much, you must've not understood a break between legit quarters is 100% needed lol. I'm not doing 20+ weeks of classes straight

well that makes a lot more sense

Dammit I knew I was forgetting something. It's PQRST. Or MNOPQ. Well, I've ruined my joke, and taught you all incorrect things.

I passed cardiology I swear.
this is just for physiology. I passed the test for sure and ECGs look a little bit less like abstract art

Our semesters are 16 weeks, with normally 2 reading days and 2 or 3 testing days at weeks 4, 8, 12, and 16. But we are on clinical rotations for 8 of the 32 weeks. So we only have 24 weeks of class first through third year.

Hrm I think we have 15 weeks of classes (plus 1-2 weeks of finals) per semester. 1 week of clinical experience and 1 week of PBL stuff. So that makes it 13ish weeks of classes.

Oh, except I guess now they also have midterm weeks so make that 12!

You misread my post.
That 12 weeks is all of first quarter plus half of second quarter. Which the second and third years go straight through (First years get clinics after the first 8 weeks).
Then there’s still 4 more weeks after thanksgiving until Christmas. But there is no break after the first quarter for the semester.

We still have lectures on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of midterm week, and Monday and tuesday of finals week -_-

Ew
We sometimes have lectures at the beginning of finals week, but usually only if finals week is actually two weeks, and we always get at least one study day.

I'm also on the old exam schedule which is one or two exams a week throughout most of the semester. The noobs starting with 2021 just have midterms and finals...or at least that's how it supposed to be...they still have a few other exams sprinkled throughout the semester.

I wish we had study days before finals. They basically give us the weekend between the end of classes and the start of finals week
University wide policy is that we have to have a study day prior to the start of finals, so vet students get that benefit too.

We also only take one day of midterms (except second years, who have Friday and Monday) that is 3 hours straight through. Our finals are two days at 3 hours straight through both days. So we don't really need a midterms or finals week in the same way other schools do.

As someone who is on their fifth test in a week, I don't know if it would be better or worse for me to take them all in a condensed couple of days or just have this hellish spread that we have now

Dude, I'm torn. I don't know if I would be doing any better if I wasn't on the condensed format. But I also feel like I wouldn't get so lost in the material.

I think I would get more sleep and be less grumpy if it were condensed, but I also think I would do much worse on exams on average
