Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yup fasTrack invite. Technically speaking though, there was an earlier date in the beginning of October, like the 5th or something. I waited to go to work that day to see my schedule. By the time I logged back on, the 5th was taken, so I had to get the later date. Oh wells!

Wow that's interesting. I thought they sent out fast-track invites before "regular" invites. I'm so confused.

I guess not. My primary was released on August 9, which was way after a bunch of others got non-fast track invites. Just by going with what the e-mail said, it looks like they just want the person to pick the earliest possible interview date quickly and send in the secondary/LORs later since those items can add extra time to the process.

Oh and quick question: for those of you who were "fast-tracked", how long did it take from being complete to receiving the interview invite?

Since your primary is the only thing they see to determine whether you get a FT or not, there is no complete e-mail, just the "we got your primary" e-mail. But you do have to be complete (secondary/LORs sent) before your interview.

Interesting. I got a got a complete email (those exact words) several days ago.

This is confusing 😕

Received Secondary - July 5th
Completed Secondary - July 5th
Complete Status Email - July 12th
FT Interview Invite - July 16th
Interview Date - September 10th

Added this school late. Got the secondary today and sent it in :xf: Hoping for the best

I received two separate complete emails from DMU. One today and one 4 days ago. I guess they really wanted to let me know I was complete haha

Received Secondary - July 5th
Completed Secondary - July 5th
Fast Track Interview Invite - July 16th
Complete Status Email - July 31st
Interview Date - September 6th

The reason my file took a while to get completed was due to late LORs. Thankfully, that hasn't seemed to hurt me this application season 🙂

So excited for my interview next week! Hoping for an acceptance soon after! Love this school!

So excited about my interview next week! The more I learn about this school, the more I love it!

Anyone know what the first interview date is here? I'm on the 27th.
Also, any clue how long it takes for a decision and how they notify?

Man, this school is efficient!

Primary transmitted 8/28
Secondary Sent 8/30 @ 12:00 PM
Secondary Submitted 8/30 @ 1:00 PM
Fast Track Interview invitation 8/30 @ 3:30 PM

I am impressed.

Congrats! Yeah they seem to be really on top of things. What were your stats?

I would love to go to this school however with the way DO schools play ball I can only afford to hold one acceptance and it would be foolish to turn down an acceptance to a school I have applied to. Is there anyway around these crazy 1000 deposits? or some how get more time before putting down the deposit?

Thanks! I can't wait to see the place. Not looking forward to the drive up there, though.

Yea, hope and pray that you get all your acceptances around the same time 😀

I have been complete for only a week. I guess I should be more patient haha. Maybe once they receive my D.O. letter in addition to my M.D. one, that will speed things up

my understanding is that you have till dec 15th to make a deposit except for LECOM (I think) so you can hold multiple acceptances until you have to make a pocketbook decision...yet another advantage to applying early

I'd worry more about getting accepted somewhere before worrying about that. 😀

Be happy: Target Field is hosting the 2014 All-Star game. 😀

Hey WorldChanger, I literally read last year's entire thread yesterday, and one guy did say he got his first $500 back when he got accepted elsewhere and withdrew. To me, $500 is worth my seat in med school, and I'm fully prepared to send in my deposit the second DMU accepts me, if they do in a few weeks.

only if other schools were nice enough to do this too.

Cards > Twins. 😀

How many letters you can/should send in? The instructions seem to leave some wiggle room for 4, as I think it may benefit me to send a DO letter complemented nicely by an MD one.

I sent them my MD letter when I got it and will send in my DO letter in a few days.

I sent 3. Two science, one DO.

The information I received specifically stated, "Please send no more than the required letters," which would be three maximum.

They generally only want what they asked for, but they are welcome to more. Just make sure to keep it below 6

Imo, if a school asks for 3 and you know you have 3 strong letters don't send them 4. Three strong letters is enough and the fourth one can only bring you down.

That's not necessarily true. First of all, you shouldn't be asking for LoR from people who don't know you well to avoid having poor letters in general. Secondly, no school will discriminate against you because you have more then the number of letters that they ask for.

Also, keep in mind that most admissions encourage extra LoR and other activity updates to update your profile both pre and post interview.

I sent in 4 and still recieved an interview...I think it actually helped me....

Sent from my SGH-T959V using SDN Mobile

I had 5 LORs because they were sent as a packet from my committee. As long as it meets their requirements they will take them. I had two DO letters and they accepted both but they did reject one letter because it didn't fit their requirement.

I sent in 4 since I can't choose which letters go to which school. I made up a packet and the packet gets sent to each school. I still got an interview.

I sent in 5 as a packet as well. I don't remember if this was the case for DMU's secondary, but a lot of secondaries have asked me to put the name of my LOR writers, so I just picked the ones I think wrote most favorably about me and put down their names. My theory is they probably pick and read letters by the writers you chose to put down on your secondary.

hi guys...apologies in advance i know i read this somewhere, but have been searching and can't find the answer.

anyway...I have a DO letter, but its from a physician i have gotten to know, but never shadowed because she is a psychiatrist (can't really shadow a psychiatrist). does DMU require that its from a physician I actually formally shadowed?? Do you think they will accept this letter??

I will call Tuesday, but just wondering if any of you guys know anything about this. thanks!

Nope it has to be from a physician you shadowed - they will reject the letter if it's not obvious from the letter that you shadowed them. DMU is notorious for being picky about letters. Best of luck!

Des Moines actually probably won't accept it. I submitted one like yours and ended up having submit another one from someone I shadowed. They emailed me about it, so I would just wait and see if they mention it.

If I were you, I won't call them about this to bring any attention to it and just wait to see if they accept it or not. I think they will probably accept it. To be on the safe side, start thinking about who you can ask for a backup letter. The admissions committee is not the one who decides if a letter is acceptable or not, but its the people/counselors in the admissions dept who update your file. I think they probably just read the first few lines and glance at who it was signed by to determine the letter's eligibility.
