Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So... I'm gonna have a free day in des moines before my interview due to coming from another interview. With no car and nothing but whatever luggage I bring, what should I do? Anywhere specific I should visit? randomly walk around the city?

Now that I think about it that free day is going to be a sunday. The Giants open the season during the week but any good sports bars to watch a game in? What team does the area root for?!?!

Getting excited!

anybody know about what % of interviewees they accept?

I think they give out like 6-700 interviews (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and accepts 221

so it seems they are more liberal with the interviews they give out than others

I saw stats somewhere in the thread that stated 67% of OOS applicants who are interviewed are accepted.

The class size is 220. They over accept to a point because some people pick other schools

The downtown area is really nice to walk around if you have some free time. The bus system is really good (Des Moines Area Rapid Transit). Not sure how much it costs to ride without a pass, but DMU students get to ride for free once you have a DMU ID badge! If you're curious, the #11 route is the one that drops off closest to campus. It goes from downtown to near the DMU campus and then out to the Jordan Creek Mall - the biggest and most popular shopping mall in the Des Moines area. http://www.ridedart.com/pdf/BusSchedules/Schedules/Route_11.pdf

As for sports teams, since Iowa doesn't really have professional teams, a lot of people root for different teams. It just depends on who you talk to, I guess, and whether they're from Iowa or not. As for watching the game, Wellman's on Ingersoll Avenue is a popular bar only a few blocks from campus where a lot of DMU students hang out. Otherwise, there's a sports bar called Johnny's in downtown Des Moines that students go to sometimes as well.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

So do you guys know if it is possible to change your LOR writer designation from the one that you put on the secondary? I am getting a DO to write me a letter and submit it within the next week but I originally designated that an MD would be sending a letter. Do I contact admissions?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Yeah they're very nice - I would just email them about the update so they know to expect it.

do they give you b/f or lunch during the interview day?

my confirmation email didn't say anything about food. just to show up at 8.30

My II email says:

"Over the noon hour you will have a campus tour and lunch with current D.O. students.

Interviews begin at 1:15 p.m. -- we will notify you of your interview time when you arrive on campus."

what time did it say that you had to be there by?

mine said 8.30 to 3pm and that seems really really long even with the lunch and a tour

Yeah they feed you lunch for sure (free) and I think they have light refreshments available when you check in - juice, water, granola bars, etc.

I plan on being there by 8am. Not all interviews will be held at 1:15, so that's why I think they say 3pm is the relative end point of the interview day.

Yeah exactly - some people will interview immediately at 1:15 but others will have to sit and wait to interview - it just depends.

Western university in Oregon told me 8-4 or 5 🙁 that will be a long day sir

Anybody have any interview preparation tips and/or sources they'd be willing to share? 👍

hey all

what do you guys all think getting a fast track ii mean? do you guys all think its sort of meaningless?

Well, in the e-mail they send you, they say it's because you are considered competitive. What are those criteria? I'm not sure, but I believe they look at the entire application to make that determination. I don't know if it means you are a lock-in or what.

i just hope it doesn't mean they give out more ii than others

Most get normal invites especially as the cycle progresses.

what i was saying is that i really hope they gave me that fast track ii because they really saw a potential in my getting accepted there and not just because they like to carelessly give out ii

They are selective with interviews. They only hand them out to those candidates they are truly interested in.

Just breathe. I know this is a long and stressful process but the worst thing that can happen now is being so stressed out that you bomb your interview. It is a fun day. Relax.

You got a fast track interview invite when you could've had a regular invite, and I'm sure it's for a reason. Like the above poster said, just try to relax a little and enjoy the fact you already have a foot in the door to medical school.

ok. i will try to relax. thank you everyone

I tried to resist responding.... But I can't...

You're seriously complaining about the rationale behind being offered an II for one of the best osteopathic schools in the country, while hundreds of us check our mailboxes everyday wishing to receive updates? Not cool, my friend, not cool.

Zoner, I totally understand what you mean; I have a fast-track too, and I would love for it to have some special meaning that I was already locked-in, especially this early in the cycle. But in all honesty, dude, we have interviews!!!! That in itself is worth celebrating. So chill out, rock the interview, and maybe we'll be classmates. 🙂 Good luck!

hey so sorry, didn't mean to come across as complaining about the ii. I am on the same boat as you, trust me with all the other schools and going through an emotional rollercoaster as i heard other people getting ii when they submitted their apps later than i did.

my worry was that it might have been something too good to be true since i ain't hearing back from other schools

you too, g/l with ur interview as well

Are any of you fast-track people interviewing after 9/17?

How many separate interviews do you have on interview day? I know there is a panel one but any one-on-one interviews? How long does the interview(s) typically last?

You will have one interview with usually two faculty members and one student. They usually last between 20 to 45 minutes.

I am on 10/12. That was the earliest date they had available when I got the invite on 8/9.

You weren't "fast-track" though, right? There were several September dates open when I got mine on 7/27, but I wasn't a fast track interview invite.

Yup fasTrack invite. Technically speaking though, there was an earlier date in the beginning of October, like the 5th or something. I waited to go to work that day to see my schedule. By the time I logged back on, the 5th was taken, so I had to get the later date. Oh wells!

Ahh, I understand now. 😳

I would just think of it this way: regardless of how you came across the II, you now have an opportunity to really shine and convey your passion for medicine.

Is your interview going to be a little more stressful than some non-fasttrack applicants? Ehhh, maybe, but not enough to worry over. Best of luck!
