Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, not looking forward to looking forward to interviews pretty much the whole time. Food is much more appetizing AFTER the interview.
Meh

Dude get a bag of the cajun trail mix. Its right by the register and it's delicious. DMU gives you whatever you want out of the cafeteria for free.. just fyi.

+1

Wish I got more food... That fresh fruit was delicious, but I should have grabbed some snacks too.

Interview went very well I think. This school is pretty friggin amazing! It may have just moved up to #1 for me.

Good to meet you today! (I'm the blonde girl who came in with "JaBoomDay") I agree--was totally impressed by the school! 🙂 Hopefully we'll get good news soon!

Just got my complete email today. Here's hoping I'm not in for too long a wait...

Hi everyone! So it seems I'm a little late to the party, but DMU is definitely my top choice DO school. I'm waiting on one last thing for my application to be complete and am starting to get a little anxious since so many people have already interviewed or have already received interviews. Does anyone have any idea what the earliest possible dates for interviews are right now? I know that interviewing late isn't necessarily a bad thing; I'm just trying to get a sense of approximately what month I'd be interviewing in if I'm lucky enough to be granted one. Thanks!

Hey guys. Question.. I recently received an acceptance here it was also my first osteopathic interview. I have interviews scheduled at Kirksville and Kansas City as well. Has anyone interviewed at DMU and these other schools and if so why do you put DMU as your number one?

I went KCUMB. It is a good school, but DMU just clicked with me. Also it is in a sketch neighborhood.

Hey great to meet you too! You were awesome, love your personality. Lol
Good luck!

Ok. Someone already PMed me about the interview. I'll just post my reply here. It's more brief, unlike most of my interview reviews. Lol

What stood out to me at this interview? Everything. I've had a few interviews by now, and have liked some things about each, but this is the first place that really has ALL the things I liked at other schools and pretty much NOTHING that I don't like, except I'd maybe trade the Arizona weather for Iowa weather. Lol
The facilities are excellent, including the amazing surgical lab and cadaver lab. I love how much they integrate us with other professional programs like the DPMs. I know some people may not care too much for that, but I think it's great to have interactions and common ground with other healthcare professionals.
Sounds like their rotations are good quality and pretty solid. I personally like the idea of some bigger hospital and some smaller clinic stuff so that's good for me here.
Cost of living is good, and the area seems very family friendly. That's important to me as well for my family.
The students are so close knit, there's a real community atmosphere. The faculty is part of that feeling too. They seemed very approachable and welcoming. I was really surprised at how friendly the first year students were with their professors. It was great.
If you have any other specific questions I'd be pleased to answer them. Just let me know!

DMU interview day was a weird experience for me. I was bored out of my mind all day, but I came out of it with a really good impression of the school. I didn't like that there isn't a parking garage though.. and there seems to be very little parking on campus as it is. The cafeteria is also pretty weak, but I guess that's good incentive to save money and pack a lunch. Great area though. My kind of environment.

Parking actually seems pretty adequate. There's many more lots besides the one directly behind the SEC.

You know what's funny is as soon as I posted that I knew I was revealing the level of my sports ignorance. Lol

That's OK! I changed my avatar for football season, but it's actually quite embarrassing because the Hawkeyes are not doing great this year.

I will probably go back to my TARDIS avatar soon. 🙂

It's just funny because he was on two of my flights today and each time I was like, "Futchadoc?"

LOL! Firstly, I am a girl... second, I'm surprised there was only one Hawkeye shirt on your plane!

Anyways, glad your DMU interview went well!

I'm interested to know how DMU compares with ATSU-SOMA, because you had a high opinion of SOMA and SOMA is possibly my top choice. Any thoughts on how they compare?

The Gophers are keeping the pig for another year 🙂

I'm interviewing Oct 1, driving from Chicago area. Anyone else want to come and split the gas?

Has anyone received an interview yet? What kinds of questions are they asking? What is the setting for the interview/interview day like?

Many have received interviews already. Many have also been accepted

The types of questions they ask can be found at the interview feedback section of the forum, which I have so graciously linked

The setting for the interview day is fairly casual, although you better come dressed formally.

And not to be curt, but all of your questions could have easily been answered if you took 5 minutes to read some of the comments in this thread.

Interviewed here yesterday. The school is amazing. I think it's my #1 by far.

I will be eating lunch with you nerds tomorrow so prepare for questions. You can't miss me.

Hey! It was great to finally meet you, although I wasn't sure at first who you were. Lol.
Do you know who I am?
Anyway, thanks for answering our questions and taking time out of your very busy schedule to give tours and hang out with us "nerds".

haha. no problem and i figured it out after JaBoomDay told me. It was nice to meet you as well.

For future interviewees, I am a big guy, but I am not huge. Think fatass. With tattoos.

Pretty sure I met you indirectly at the chairs in front of the bookstore, I was the tiniest guy there. You put me at ease as I have.tattoos visible in short sleeves, so it made me feel better seeing yours.

I was going to walk up to you, shake your hand and say, "Nice to meet you...dude!" and wink while saying dude slowly and emphatically. That way you would know who I am. Lol
Anyway, it was a very fun and informative day. Thanks for your help, and with any luck I may just be seeing you again next year!

Edit:
Oh and you are not huge. Not even freaky big. 😉

That is awesome. I makes me happy because I want people to see that DMU doesn't care about it and they are totally accepting. Everyone is. And I love to talk so to everyone, if you see a guy on campus with full sleeves, it is me. If you want to say hi, or you have questions, come up and ask or wave me down. I enjoy it.

Haha. My username is actually the same one I got in seventh grade back when aol instant messenger was new. And at that time, I was bigger than everyone else. And then everyone caught up and I quit caring. And i quit lifting. Not that anything is wrong with it. My mind says "go lift and run" but my heart says "eat a cookie or you will die a painful death." whatya gonna do?

I read on the brochure I got that said something about anti LGBT incident at DMU. Can anyone mind sharing what that incident was?

Not that I have heard. I am active in the GSA and there are some idiots that go to school everywhere and someone may have said something, but DMU is great with LBGTQ issues and the staff is very approachable if something does come up.

If you are talking about someone saying something, probably, but I sure the issue was taken care of. It is not regular at all.

Anyone will interview on 10/18? I'm really nervous right now! Start doing some mock interviews yeah
DMU is my top choice DO school.

Questions for me. I don't care about you. Silly premed.

And you guys are nerds. Why don't you go study, nerd.

Everyone, if Stok ever calls y'all nerds... ask him about his telescope. Do it.

But congrats to everyone who has had interviews/acceptances so far!!! Hope to see you guys next year. Because any other school just isn't worth going to... 😎

For those who interviewed today, you may or may not have noticed how most students were in a fatigued, almost drunken state. We had our first anatomy exam today. Good times.

If you guys have any questions, feel free to PM me. MAYBE we can manage a pre-interview get together the day before some of y'alls big day... depending on our schedules and whatnot.

Anyone know what the alternate list movement is like from previous years? Seeing how this school seems to be everyone's top or near top choice I imagine it's almost nonexistant. Here's to hoping :luck:

I think we had quite a bit of wait list movement this year... more so than in years past. It just depends on the number of applicants. Interviewing earlier will certainly help, but if you're on the wait list, you still have a chance of getting in! 🙂
