No school has such a preference. In fact, being a non-science major makes you stand out in a positive way. The reason why you are seeing 90% is simply because majority of pre-meds are science majors.

Was this letter that you were having issues with a "research" letter that they were refusing to accept as a "science LOR?

What I'm curious about is the different proportion of science majors compared to some other schools. Here are some others from the CIB:

CCOM: 71% science majors
KCOM: 75% science majors
PCOM: 65% science majors
UNECOM: 66% science majors

As long as your GPA is good enough along with MCAT score , they don't really care about your major.

From DMU's Website:
The most common undergraduate majors are biology and chemistry, however any major is considered for admission.

Yeah it was nuts. They basically ask you 15 "secondary like" questions which turn out to be huge essays. But they use those essays to write your letter. As a result, your letter is very personalized and detailed. It was so difficult to get that letter! That's why DMU rejecting my committee letter is just ----> :bang:

Does anyone know about DMU's tuition scholarships? There are apparently 1/4 and 1/2 tuition scholarships available, and I've heard people saying that students are considered for them if they have a 30+ MCAT. The website says 30+ MCAT and a 3.6+ GPA. I have a 30+ MCAT and a sub 3.6 GPA. Would I still be considered?

doubtful. DMU looks very generous with scholarships, and they are, but the vast majority are based on the rural pathways. I think they give out the equivalent of 6 full scholarships. This is a contract that says you will practice in rural iowa after a primary care residency. some people may get scholarships but outside of the rural pathways, you are going to need to be a stellar candidate. i start school with a few 3.6+ and 30+ that I know of that didn't get any scholarships. it would be cool, but don't plan on it and don't wait for the financial aid packet to make a decision.
 
For those of us interviewing in September, we should probably hear back about our acceptance status by beginning of October right?

I hope so! That way I could pull all my apps. Im worried about the waitlist though....
 
I interviewed in early/mid september and I heard back in exactly 2 weeks and 1 day. At the interview, they told us we would have a decision in 3 weeks or less. I would say this probably hasn't changed however last year when everyone was complete, they said we would know within 30 days, not 60. But if it is like last year, you should hear in about 2-3 weeks.
 
So are our interviews open or closed file?

Yes, they are friendly. I had 2 students and a professor for mine. Very open and casual. They obviously weren't trying to trick me or anything... they genuinely wanted to know about me and my opinion on certain things. There are other interviewers I heard about that aren't as "friendly", but that's the way it is everywhere.

Sweet man thanks! DMU has officially become my top choice school. Everything about it seems awesome.
 
hey guys, I am looking to get into DMU next year and I was just trying to compare its clinical rotations to other schools. I know it is super early to start thinking about it but it is a part of my decision process. I am from Ohio and would really like to go back there for third year. I read that DMU has a lottery system for getting the rotation sites, and I was just curious how many people are placed in Ohio? As in do you think it would be hard for me to be placed there?

Currently, DMU has something like five year long sites in Ohio. I have no idea how many students go to each site. Rotation sites change from year to year especially ones that are located outside of Iowa with the expansion of other medical schools taking over those sites. Do not pick a school based on rotation sites unless that school owns that site. DMU's goal is for every student to have high quality rotations. There was a push to have more students stay in Iowa and especially the greater Des Moines area.
 
Once your LORs were submitted, how long did it take for the school to upload them?
 
My letters were snail mailed, but even then it took about four days between being stuck in the mail and letting me know they had received my letters.
 
For those of you who got an interview invite from this super duper awesome school.. Did you have your LORs all in/files marked complete before the invite? (Besides the fast track super ballers.. Heh heh.)

Hey guys... just got an interview invite from DMU this afternoon (via email). It was not fast track. I scheduled for the first date open, September 20th.

I was complete on 7/24/2012 and I have 3.33/3.56/29Q. Hopefully they sent out other interview invites today as well!

You're forgetting that the vast majority of applicants are science majors. Even though it doesn't matter what your major is, the statistics are based purely on math.

Just booked my flight to Des Moines. Anyone have any recommendations for inexpensive hotels nearby that have shuttle service to the school and airport?

I'm staying at the Hampton inn by the airport, 70 bucks when you ask for the interview discount, shuttle from the airport to the hotel

Nice, congrats! You could probably fly into Des Moines and rent a car and drive to KCOM... KCOM is about 3 hours from DMU.
