Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all, I was accepted into one of my top choice programs this morning so I'll be declining my acceptance at DMU. It's a great school, however, and I hope my withdrawal opens up a spot for one of you. Good luck to all!

Hi all, I was interviewed on 10/18 Now It has been more than 3 weeks, but I haven't heard anything from them. Should I email them/ give them a call or should I continue to wait and pray...??

since the whole campus closes down by like 12, where do people study? i am the type of student who needs to be in a library or away from home to get stuff done. where would i go after school closes?

12 as in midnight? The campus closes at 1am and opens again st 6am. If that isn't enough for you, you probably should reevaluate your study habits.

I heard some people regularly pull all-nighters in med school. How long does it typically take you to study and feel confident about what you learned?

Well you will probably never feel comfortable with the material before a test, but that is med school. It really isn't too hard if you stay on top of things.

Did any of you send thank you letters or e-mails post-interview? I know that sending one won't have an effect on my admissions decision, but I was thinking that it would be a nice gesture. Opinions about post-interview thank yous seem to be pretty mixed on SDN, so I wanted to see what other interviewees here have done.

I did, to all three of my interviewers. No responses, but I was accepted.

I always send thank-yous after an interview. I sent them for the last school I interviewed at and had responses from everyone. I wouldn't think of not sending one. That's just my feeling, though.

Usually I would send a letter (and did at other schools), but I just sent an email thank-you to DMU since the interviewers email addresses were listed on our card. My interviewer responded to me.

Thanks everyone! My inclination was definitely to send something, so thanks for confirming that. 🙂

thank you. you make an excellent point.

I sent thank you emails to my interviewers. However, I don't know if thanking them makes a difference. I was accepted at a school even before I got a chance to write thank-yous. It made for an interesting situation where I thanked the interviewers for vouching for me and accepting me.

I called DMU today to inquire about my hold status. They said they don't re-review the files on hold until spring, and that you'll be considered for an interview only if there are still spots open.

Apparently the main reason why I was put on hold is because the adcom wasn't sure if I'm interested in osteopathic medicine (ouch). I only have an MD letter of recommendation. The person I talked to highly suggested that I use the time from now until when they re-review files to engage in DO related activities.

The good news is that I have until spring to improve my application 🙄 Time to look for DO's to shadow.

Hix got on Alternative list! I thought my interview went well, but... I should have saved my top choice DMU for 2nd med interview. Anybody know how the movement of Alternative list would be like? When will they accept students from the alternative list and is there a ranking system for alternative list? Good luck to you all

AHH! I just received an acceptance!!!!! Can't really put it into words how excited I am! I interviewed on the 12th.

I just got accepted to DMU this afternoon! I interviewed on 11/8/12 and received notice of my acceptance in less than a week! Prior to this, I was waitlisted at OU-HCOM as an in-state student. What a turn around! I'm excited to meet the class of 2017!

Well, the first deposit is due Dec 14th, so that should open up some seats for you. Best of luck, and hopefully I will see you there next year.

I have my interview coming up at the end of this month. I should (hopefully) hear back from DMU about acceptance/waitlist/rejection before the December 14/15th deposit deadline for schools, right?

Yes. I've never seen it take longer than 10 days to hear back. They usually tell you right on that 10th day.

According to last year's thread, only few people got off the WL. Also, they have a ranking system that you can find out about in May-June, which is the earliest when they take people off WL. Good luck!

But I don't think you have to have the deposit that soon. That would be crappy if they gave you a week or less.

I'm accepted at CCOM so I would need to decide between CCOM and DMU before the 15th. Unless DMU knocks my socks off (which I've heard it does for some people), then my decision would be easier haha

The December 15th deposit deadline only applies if you're accepted prior to November 15th. If you're accepted between November 15th and January 14th, you have 30 days from the time of your acceptance to send the deposit. My bad...I didn't read your second post until after I had responded to your first. Yeah, I guess you will have to decide before the 15th then. Even though it'll probably be a tough choice, it's not a bad position to be in! Congrats!

x-posted from the KCOM thread.

Hey my dear DMU med students!

I'm considering a second look at the schools that have accepted me. I want to know if I flew in from California and came to DMU, would I be allowed to walk around on campus and sit in on a lecture? More importantly, would there be any willing students who would show me around town and *maybe* let me give me a spot to sleep that night?

I'm thinking about going in December (12th-14th).

Please pm me if you're interested!

acceptance declined. best wishes to everyone else.

Had a great day at dmu today, a bit long, though. The interview was very low stress and everyone from the students to faculty were very nice. We'll see what happens.

Hey does anyone have the list of DMU's core rotation sites? I've been doing a search on their website and on SDN and I can't seem to find a recent list of places. Can someone help me out?

Also for the fourth year, it says that there's eight weeks dedicated to family medicine/ rural medicine and community / international medicine. Can anyone expand upon what is considered "community medicine"?

For current students, DMU requires us to have our own health insurance. What if we don't have insurance? Is there an option for us to purchase insurance via DMU or do we have to purchase our own through a 3rd party?

To find the list of rotation sites, I had to go to the individual departments. I'm interested in Pediatrics, so when I looked under that tab, it gave a list of sites. Not sure if every department has its own list. I don't think they gave us a list at the interview.

I've been wondering about their rotation sites as well. I was able to find this post with some really helpful information about rotations,
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=13150613&postcount=1414
but I was really hoping to find something published by the school with detailed information about each rotation site, so if anyone knows of a resource like this, please advise!!

As far as the community medicine goes, I think it's similar to rural... just not based in a hospital, but more like a doctor's office or clinic? Not sure, though.

Just canceled my interview for the 19th, if anyone wants to snag it up... good luck everyone!

Congrats to everyone accepted so far!

I am the wife of a 1st year and thought I'd offer my insight to anyone who has questions about moving out here. I was really stressed about moving my family so far and not knowing how it would work out, but so far things have been pretty good for us!

So please feel free to PM me if you or your spouse/significant other have any questions!

Hey thanks for all of the responses for the rotations! That's really helpful. I'm trying to compile a list of stuff so that I can compare the schools.

Hey does anyone know if it's typically snowing up in Des Moines by December 12th? I want to be prepared in case it is because I've never driven in snow before. :/

Also, is class still in session then or has the school already closed down for winter break? The site said it doesn't break until Dec 22nd, but I want to make sure that it's definitely still in session.

Class will still be in session. Concerning the weather, I would have some chains in your trunk just in case

I'm interviewing soon at DMU so does anyone have any hotels that they would recommend?

I stayed at the Hampton Inn near the airport, and I'd recommend it. If you call and tell them that you're interviewing at DMU, you'll pay $79.99/night. They also provide complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport, as well as to and from DMU. They have complimentary breakfast and wi-fi, too.

If I remember correctly, from reading last year's thread and from the interview day, the financial aid lady (I can't remember her name) mentioned that scholarship letters go out sometime in December, right? I remember hearing that, but I can't seem to find it in writing. I know that Financial Aid Award letters go out in March, but I'm assuming that also takes into account loans since the FAFSA will be in by then. Anyone remember hearing something similar, or am I completely off-base?

Just turned down my acceptance to DMU. Good luck to everyone waiting patiently to hear good news from them.

not sure about the scholarships as I don't think there are very many (i don't know of anyone that go one, but I am sure there were some) but the financial aid packet didn't come to us until about June. Maybe they told you guys something different. and i also assume you are talking about the scholarships that you don't have to apply for?

Yeah, those.
