Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think you are drinking the kook aid. Dr. Franklin is burning well established bridges at DMU. She is angering leadership at the hospitals in Des Moines and the faculty are leaving in mass secondary to her firing Dr. Reed. She is proposing radical solutions to non-problems. DMU has a great product, arguably the best inthe DO world and I see her changes threatening that. If the board is smart she'll be gone soon.

Anyone else on pre-interview hold and really wanting an interview here? I have mediocre stats too. Why must they make me hopeful 🙁

How do you know you're on pre-interview hold? Did they email you? I've been complete for 54 days now, and still haven't heard a thing 😴

what is this in reference to??

Day 62...called and they said my file still hasn't been discussed and no change. Cool.

Don't worry. As you can see my post above, I was complete 9/12. Took them a while, but I heard they've been sending emails to people saying that they've been experiencing some delays. Maybe they're really getting slammed with applications. I almost forgot about this school by the time I got my ii. But don't worry, I'm sure you'll hear back with good news soon! 🙂

I'm not on hold but I am waiting on an ii I was complete 10/22 🙁

Yep. My file was complete on 10/18 and received an email on 11/02:

"We have recently completed a review of your application for admission to the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Des Moines University.

Due to the large volume of highly competitive applicants, we have placed your file on hold. This simply means that while you are not invited to interview with us at this time, you are still under consideration for a possible interview later in the application cycle.

The Admission Committee will review your file again in the coming months. At that time, you will either be invited for an interview, remain on hold, or your application will be denied. If your file remains on hold, you will not receive a status update."

rough stats? anxiously waiting as well! Congrats, good luck.

I don't think my stats are that bad. 3.3S, 3.5C, 30S. I got a 3.95 GPA for grad, tons of EC, experience working in a developing country, upcoming presentations for the NIH, and a couple patents pending. If those are rough stats, then I don't even know. But yeah. Good luck with your apps, hopefully they'll get to you with an ii soon!

I think he was just inquiring about your approximate stats, not insulting them

Ahh, I see. Thanks for clearing that up felix2929. That's the problem with text. Tons of room for misinterpretation. Either that or is it because I'm ESL. >_< Hahaha, Sorry ajh1983. But irregardless, hope you hear back soon.

yes, rough meaning approximate. I hope we all hear something soon with interviews being scheduled so far out at this point. DMU is easily my top pick at this point.

interviewed at DMU 11/19. was AMAZING! the students/falculty were sooo nice! My interviewers were super chilled. No grilling, no ethics questions !!!( I was so surprised)! students had exams that day so we only got to talk to them during lunch. Super helpful and fun. Pretty cool facillities with the SIMs and all but I'm iffy on the lottery system for 3rd yr rotations. They said 95% of their students gets where they want to go. We will see how I did in a few weeks! hopefully I get accepted! Ahhhhhhh the waiting game again!

Hey, I was at the 11/19 interview too. I was the one from Jersey. Do you think they'll get the decisions out today, it looks like last week they put out the letters for the ppl that interviewed on monday that wed. I hate this waiting nonsense. Were you in the D.O. group or the DPM group?

Count on them being out 10 days from when you interviewed. Good luck!

Have any of you gotten in with a lower MCAT score? By lower, I mean <26. I got an interview with a lower MCAT, and so far the only people on this thread that I saw commenting on that issue have gotten wait-listed/rejected even though their interview went supposedly well. I am obviously going either way, it would just be nice to know if there is even a remote chance of getting an acceptance... Thanks🙂

Got a really nice letter with a small personal, hand-written note from Dr. M congratulating me on my acceptance. DMU is so nice and amazing, and I'm a little sad that I won't be attending next year.

Congrats on your acceptances, when did you interview?

Yeah. The earliest date I could pick was 1/24. They had other dates in January open, but I'll be out of the country during those dates. But they don't seem to have anything open for past February 1. I don't know if they purposely closed the later months off or if that's the latest they want to interview.

OMG HII!!!!!!!
I was in the DO group with you!

I'm the one who is working in PA =] I just got accepted today! It was so fast!! 2 day turn around! woot woot!

Yay, got an interview invite! I was complete on Sept 27th, for anyone interested. Sadly the dates available are nowhere near my Dec 17th KCOM interview. I'm not sure if I can really afford two separate trips to the midwest...

I would give the admissions office a call once or twice a week to see if you can move into a slot right around your other interview. I was originally scheduled for a 1/19 interview but I called last wed and got moved to this past Monday. At this time of year a lot of ppl are getting acceptances at other schools and canceling. They have a list you can put your name on but everyone that I have seen that moved up has done so by calling. Good luck.
Btw it was the first time I had called

Accepted today!!! First acceptance and I'm so freaking happy! I was totally blown away by this school.

Hi everyone!

Not sure if you know me, but I used to be very active on the forum a while back. I'm currently a 1st year at DMU. It's been a couple months since I last posted here, so I just wanted to congratulate everyone who has been accepted!!! 😀

If you have any questions about the school or anything, feel free to PM me. I'll try to remember to check frequently. DMU is a fantastic school with amazing faculty and students (i promise I wasn't paid to say that, haha).

And just for old times sake:

Does anyone know if the deposit can be taken care of solely online or do I have to fill out the form and mail in a check? Thanks.

Alternative list, sigh. It was my first interview as a reapplicant and I definitely choked a bit. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll be posting here in June. Good luck to everyone else.

What a coincidence. Today is the first day I've checked in on this thread in a while!

Interviewed on 11/19. I really enjoyed the school and had a great experience up until my interview. I feel like the two that interviewed me had very little interest in what I had to say. They asked the same question twice. Prefaced questions with the wrong preface, making it difficult to answer what they were looking for. Ending was awkward as they looked at each other and said "Well, I got nothing." and that was it. Gave my closing argument and left. I was put on the alternate list two days later. Wasn't a first choice, but I was really unimpressed with the interviewers. Plus, they had no sense of humor.

So I interviewed a while ago, the very end of September, and never actually wrote about my experience.

I was hosted by a student who despite me being delayed leaving Denver several hours and arriving at almost midnight the night before an anatomy practical, he insisted on still letting him host me despite me telling him I didn't want to inconvenience him. I was really tired between having an interview the day before my interview here and waking up at sixish to get ready because he had to be at school early, but couldn't have been more grateful of how awesome he was about it all.

The interview day itself was pretty standard as far as being shown around, and the facilities are really nice as far as simulations and whatnot and the OMM demonstration was pretty neat to watch firsthand. We met a great deal of the faculty and everything was explained very clearly about curriculum changes, IT changes that potentially were coming, rotations, etc.. Lunch was glorious due to them saying get as much as you want to eat which for me was absolutely great. All the students I met were wonderful, and they sat with us and answered all of our typical questions at lunch as well as while awaiting our interviews. Everyone was so nice, encouraging and genuinely interested in us, which made me feel so comfortable. My interviewers were an M2 and Dr. Wilson. They asked standard questions as well as focusing a lot on my application in particular and what I wrote about in my personal statement. I was asked about flunking out my freshman year, <1.0 GPA... but they sincerely seemed impressed with my performance the remainder of my time in school. My research interests came up a bit and we even discussed potential for scholarships based on my experiences in the lab and I inevitably walked out "knowing" I would be accepted. I was the last to interview and when I came out most everyone was gone, as you would expect as my interview did run long and I was last, but a student who I believe is part of the student government or whatnot approached me and spoke to me about my interview and told me how he didn't want me to feel forgotten about and wanted to make sure I was good on getting back to the airport and so forth.

Des Moines is a lot nicer than I had envisioned in my head prior to visiting and thanks to my host I got to see a bit of downtown before I left.

I was accepted within a week if I remember right, and unless one of my state schools takes me (tuition difference), I will most likely matriculate.

It's like you took the experience out of my head and posted it here. Being last was great. We went like 45 mins long. Hope to meet you next year!

I got an acceptance with a 25 MCAT and my interview went very well. They didn't even ask about my low verbal score. I have very good ECs and they were most impressed with my experience. So, there is definitely a chance with low scores. You just need to have other impressive things on your app to make up for that low score.

Accepted 5 days after the interview!!! So stoked. If you have any questions just PM me and I'll answer as best as I can!

Thank you. This gave me hope, especially as my lower score is due to verbal as well...

Just received a personalized letter from Dr. Mueller about attending DMU-COM. Gosh, this school treats its students so well - even the potential ones!

I must say that I have been surprised yet again by this school.

I got one today too! How nice!! I feel all special and totally got a warm fuzzy feeling! 😀

Definitely feeling love for this school. None of the others have taken the time to personal note. And I love Dr. M already! I will be putting down my deposit this coming week!

Hey guys, I interviewed last Monday and was accepted Wednesday. I just wanted to give my impression of the interview process here to hopefully help out anyone who is going in to interview. The first thing we did was sit down with dr. Mueller in a conference room and introduced ourselves, just have something interesting about yourself ready to talk about. The actual interview was pretty laid back and there was very little pressure. The overall sense that I got was that they were really just trying to get an idea of who I was as a person. The questions they asked were not too difficult, they started by asking me to tell them about myself for 5 minutes or so, asked why D.O. when i have a high MCAT, why DMU, asked about my work in the medical field(EMT), asked about my research, and asked me to explain a few withdrawals early in college. I think more than anything the most important thing in this interview is to let your personality come out for the interview, have a good time, make sure you keep a friendly tone the whole time, and if it fits you make sure there are a few laughs. If there's anything on your application that sticks out, bad or good, be ready to tak about it. ie.. For the bad, If you failed classes or have a low mcat. Or towards the good end- your main research or community service activities that were reallly important. Overall just be yourself, be friendly, and make sure they can see that you will be someone who can contribute in the class and socially. Hope this helps. PM me if you have any specific questions about the interview. Good luck.
One last thing, remember that your interviewers aren't there to pick you apart, they are your advocates, so relax and just be yourself!

I've been meaning to post about my interview experience but haven't yet, and jp988's post was the motivation I needed to do it. I hope that this will prove useful to those of you who have upcoming interviews; I know how helpful and reassuring it was for me to read through others' feedback on here. The interview day is definitely as relaxed as everyone says. When you meet with Dr. Mueller in the conference room and give your brief tell-me-about-yourself spiel, he'll ask each person follow-up questions, which was a little unexpected at first, but I actually liked how he seemed genuinely interested in getting to know us. It's really informal and conversational so no need to be worried. He'll also talk about DMU's strengths and anticipated curriculum changes, and then you'll have a brief financial aid presentation. Then you'll tour the surgical skills lab, talk with one of the deans, watch an OMM demonstration, and have lunch with first and second years. Then, depending on when your interview is, you'll either have the campus tour first or the interview first. In addition to the school's strengths, I was impressed by how friendly and approachable everyone was, how we were encouraged to speak candidly with current students, and how much current students seem to love the school. I was also really impressed with my fellow interviewees—this was my first interview, and I was kind of expecting an awkward competitive vibe (Oh, you did research for 3 years? Well I did research for 6 years and made a particle accelerator in my garage when I was 5.)—but yeah, there was none of that. I really liked the people I interviewed with and would love to have them as my classmates.

As for the actual interview, it was very laid-back. I had two faculty members, and they told me that it's common for one of your interviewers to become your advisor if you matriculate, which I thought was pretty cool. My interview was surprisingly short, which freaked me out a little afterward but apparently is not necessarily a bad thing since I was ultimately accepted two days post-interview. They really did not ask me many questions. I was asked what I liked about one EC I was involved in and that was the only thing that I was questioned about in terms of my application. They also asked: why osteopathic medicine?, who is someone that you admire? (I started off by talking about my mom, but then they asked me to name a public figure), why DMU?, what is something that your patients will appreciate about you and what's something that they might not like about you?, what will be the biggest challenge you'll face in med school?, what would you do if you were struggling in a class? And that was it! Like jp988 and others have said, just be yourself. Good luck!!! Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

tl;dr
Interview is relaxed; just be yourself. DMU is awesome!

FYI, I got an email from Anna last week that the scholarship committee would be meeting in the next few weeks, and once a final decision was made, those who have scholarship offers will be emailed.

So those still yet to interview are ineligible for these?

It would be beyond awesome to get a scholarship, but I'm not holding my breath 🙁. Did she e-mail you about it randomly?
