Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So do you have any clue what the likelihood is of being accepted in the earlier interviews- Like September

All I know is that I interviewed the very first day possible at DMU and there were a lot of the people in my interview group that are now in my class. I would say at least 5 of us. It was a fasttrack interview as well (I don't know if they did those this year). I would say the likelyhood of getting excepted in the earlier groups is better than the later groups. There is also the factor that a lot of people get off the waitlist each year. I study with two guys who got off the waitlist.

Anyone know how DMU views extra LORs? I have already been marked as complete, but there are two more I'd like to send (one from a DO).

Hey guys and gals just a little word from a current student for all of you out there stressing about getting your interviews. A few of us that are involved with interview days met with admissions yesterday and they reiterated to us how DMU carefully selects students that show more than just good GPA and MCAT scores. They have seen people that do service in undergrad generally continue to do service in medical school. The same goes for leadership/shadowing/research and all the areas that make you a strong applicant. DMU wants students that are strong in these other areas because they care about the people in our community here and they want our student body to be involved. So good luck!

Thanks for the information. I'll be there September 13th. Looking forward to seeing the school and meeting everybody!

Yes same here! The more I learn about this school, the more impressed I am, and the more nervous I get about the interview

+1. Me too are u flying in the day before?

For shadowing in a rural area, do you guys think its okay to talk about shadowing experience done in a foreign country?

How much did you guys write for the secondary questions? I was pretty happy that DMU didn't have essay prompts but I realize the answers to the questions they asked can be pretty lengthy as well.

just rescheduled my interview for November 15... pretty excited, just a little nervous about getting up in front of everyone and introducing myself, just being a non-traditional and all (30+)... other than that, can't wait... good luck, people...

From what I heard, the interview is nothing to be nervous over 🙂
I would agree with you. Not very many interviewers are here to grill you.(There is one or two that like to try to throw you off you game). Before your interview there will be some students hanging out in the waiting area with you and they can help you with who you are interviewing with and what to expect.

I will be eating lunch with you guys and giving a tour of the school that day so I'll see you there

There are several "30+'s" here in our class. They are some of my favorite because they are level headed. We also have a professor here who graduated from DMU and was a non-traditional 30+ with two teenagers. DMU is very understanding and respectful when it comes to non-traditional students so I wouldn't worry to much.

Hey can you speak on how common it is for dmu students to be married?

I'm interviewing in October, and I'm soooooooooooooooo stoked. This school is definitely my top choice.

Nice. 30+ with a kiddo here, so this is music to my ears!

Just emailed cancellation of interview sept 27 in case anyone wanted to change to that date

Wow your stats are good . I just submitted my secondary yesterday, now I'm nervous.

i think it was the secondary. they asked me what expereinces i had with rural medicine and osteopathic docs. for both I said none. oh well

Your stats are just like mine but my mcat is 28. I was complete 8/7 and haven't heard a word since...now I'm getting really nervous.

I think it may have more to do with luckylee3's lack of exposure to DOs and rural physicians. I know of several people with lower stats that have received iis to DMU. I hope the rest of your cycle turns-out better luckylee3!

Does DMU tell you if you're put on hold? If I haven't heard anything has my app not been looked at yet?

I was worried about that too because I'm in the same boat and they told me that if you're file is reviewed that you'll get notified, whether you're invited to interview, placed on hold or rejected. Regardless, you'll know once you've actually been reviewed.

Thanks for the info, I've been sitting here wondering. But I'm still confused about what order they review apps in, if there even is one. Some people complete the same day as me already have an interview. This process is so unpredictable 🙄

I returned my secondary the say they went out and when I called they said I should know in the next four weeks, and I called to check on things last week. I think they're just really behind.

It's nice to know someone is in the same boat as me right now. No news is good news at this point I suppose. Keep me posted on if you hear anything!

Hello everyone:
I am a 23-year-old male from California and will be interviewing at DMU on Sep 23. I booked a room at the Holiday Inn near the Airport for the night of September 22. The room has two queen bed, shuttle from the airport and to DMU. If anyone would like to save some money and share the room, please let me know, thank you 🙂. (It will be 50$)

Just submitted my secondary to this school! Ah yeah! Lady luck be on my side!

I have been complete since August 2nd, I didn't hear from them since then...I want to call and ask but I'm scared lol

XFireMedic called a couple weeks ago and they said we should hear within the next four weeks. They are probably really behind in reviewing files.

I have been complete for awhile and the admissions committee had had my file since 7/31 and I still haven't heard so don't sweat it too much. You can always call and see where you are in the process, they're really very nice!

Has anyone logged on to their secondary lately. All of my stuff has been deleted. I guess they updated their system

I just got off the phone with them, as long as you submitted your info, they have got it. Apparently there was an update over the weekend.

Does anyone know how to go about cancelling a interview? I have one scheduled for 9/20, I would love to go but just got accepted to another school and don't think I would want to shell out $500 for a plane ticket.

Thats weird, I just barely logged in and all the info I have put in thus far is still there, and I haven't submitted yet.

Maybe it applies to people who have already submitted

You should have an email with a number to call. Let me know if you do, I'd love to move mine up 😉

Got my hold status email today........

"Due to the large volume of highly competitive applicants, we have placed your file on hold. This simply means that while you are not invited to interview with us at this time, you are still under consideration for a possible interview later in the application cycle."

Has anyone ever gotten an ii after being placed on hold?
