Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

Hi everyone!
I just received my June 20th MCAT scores and I'm freaking out. Do I have a chance at DMU with an 11V/7P/9B MCAT score and a 3.9 GPA? (plus tons of research, etc). I know I screwed up the physical. 7 is such a low score. 🙁

I'm not sure if you know this, but you're in a perfectly fine position for admission as far as numbers go. Sure, your PS subscore is semi-weak, but that's one thing. It's time to practice being confident in your numbers and app. That will benefit you far more than worrying.

Thank you for your post. I actually did not know that and yeah I do have a problem with the confidence thing. I submitted my secondary last Thursday but they emailed me that they do not have the letters of recommendation. For those of you that are complete, how long did it take them to upload your letters?

I submitted my secondary the 15th and just yesterday got my confirmation that my file was complete.

How did you check?

I got a complete email, and it says pending LORs/Mcat scores(unless submitted already)

😵

hmm so I'm working on the secondary. Do you think on the last question they want specifically service experiences like volunteering per se, or do you think it'd be alright to talk about an experience like working as a scribe? I think the latter experience has been more meaningful in terms of medicine, but I'm not sure if it would fit.

Thanks!

I dont think everything you write has to be directly related to medicine. I think as long as there is some aspect of the experience that can fit into the medical field you should be fine. I think doing it that way shows you as a more diverse person. Up to you though.

Good luck!

I appreciate your response, and yeah I think you're right! Thanks a bunch!

Hey guys, quick question:

For the part of the secondary that asks if you had any clinical exposure with a physician in a rural practice do they mean a private practice/clinic or would a hospital in a town of less than 15,000 suffice?

Thanks!

After reading this thread, I realized I totally misread one of the prompts. There goes my $100 and the chance to attend one of my top DO choices.:cry::cry::cry:

Hi everyone!

I'm excited to be applying here this cycle as well. Anxiously awaiting a secondary because all my other stuff is in. Anyone know what my chances are with a 3.52s/3.65c/28 mcat?

Thanks!

Sounds pretty good to me.. as long as your got ECs too

Thanks for the input. I have about 30 hrs shadowing a D.O., had my NREMT but it's now expired, 6 month internship doing autopsies at a Coroner's Office, about 200 hours of hospital volunteering, and now work in a lab for a small company.

Does the lack of ii mean that they are not doing fast tracks this year? Or are they just behind last year?

Lack of ii??? Is DMU not doing interviews this year???? 😀

Haha. But for the sake of pure speculation, yeah, I'd say they might have decided not to do fast track IIs this year. A little game changer is good, I like it 😉

congrats guys! how did u find out? email?

exciting..first one.... Sept 13!

Complete 7/24!

Cant wait to you meet you guys there!

Dang, two other IIs but nothing here 🙁. 3.42 gpa/34 MCAT, URM
Complete email 7/23

Woohoo II as well! Scheduled for 9/13.

Complete 7/24

Lets get some stats up in here for those with invites

I also got an ii today. Numbers aren't stellar, so they must have looked at my file and actually read my essays. I've heard nothing but good about the school, and shadowed a really good D.O. from there who seemed fond of it for what I thought were obvious reasons. 😉

File complete 7/22.
3.4s/3.4c
28 (9/10/9)

Good luck to all of us!

I feel like I'm seeing preference for gpa over MCAT right now. Funny how different each school's stat trends are
