Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah. I know applicants with plenty of that as well, without an II. Its obviously still early... I'm just making an observation more than anything.

My ii came yesterday, I'm a Utah resident, 3.55 cGPA, 3.37 sGPA 31M MCAT. Lots of clinical hours due to working as a CNA for three years. Served as Secretary to my school's Pre-SOMA and AMSA clubs. ~200hrs community service. Non-trad with a wife and three kids. Any other questions about my application feel free to PM me. Good luck everyone!

3.55c/3.8'ish science/30Q

Medical Assistant for about 4 years in Primary Care office

Oh jeez im sorry. What were ur stats?

3.7 nonscience 3.6 cumulative. Great lors with one from a md school dean, good story and wide ranging ec's, clinical full time job for the next year. Dmu looked awesome from what I read about it, I hope I have better luck in the future. Mcat was a 28

Many interviews seem for oos applicants.... Did anyone from Iowa get ii?

Well they only connection that I have is that my town is surrounded by corn...🙄

I don't want to wait til September! Ugh....patience...not my best virtue.

3.7sGPA/3.5GPA 28 MCAT. Interview invite scheduled for Sept. 19.

interview invite... OOS sGPA 3.98 / cGPA 3.51 / 26R (retook MCAT 7/26) file complete 8/1...
how's the weather up in Des Moines this time of year? I'm from Hawaii, so not sure if I should pack "warm"...

Did you get it today?

I just got an ii as well, got the email about an hour ago. I think I missed the first batch because I wasn't complete until the 29th of July. Looks like they have quite a few interview days for September and a few for October.

Dang. 3.42/34 MCAT/ URM with good clinical ECs, still nothing.

Yeah it is early still. I was hoping my MCAT would even out my gpa a little. Looks like most of the IIs so far have favored gpa. Hopefully I'll get my shot!

DMU seems like a GPA + MCAT loving school. Is this one of the hardest DO's to get into?

Even if the numbers suggest that this is so, there is a considerable weight put on the other factors as well. I got in (interviewed in January). 😉 Just continue to put forth the best possible image your application allows, and be patient.

denied...

3.76 sgpa, 3.7 gpa from a top 12 university
26 mcat
2 science publications, stellar ecs, very very unique background and creative talents

app complete: 7/25
decision: 8/5

How did they tell you? I was complete the same day and my stats are worse.

I'm curious how people know they got denied or are they just assuming?

I already got an interview, actually. Got any tips?

September/October in Iowa is sometimes warm and sometimes perfect...depends on if we're having a "long" summer into September or not....could be 70s-80s one day and 50s-60s the next. October will be cooler in temp...occasionally we can have a 40s day. The mornings will be chilly as temps drop overnight sometimes drastically.
Like right now it's 67 outside but it'll be 92 by noon.

I am very curious as to how people are finding out about their rejected statuses. I looked at the application website, and there is no status indication other than the submission details.

Thanks for the info... it doesn't sound too bad. I was expecting much lower, but it sounds similar to our weather right now -- low mid 60's high low 80's with 10000% humidity.

Where are people interviewing Sep. 13 staying. I am trying to find a hotel that has a shuttle to airport and school.

from past year's thread, i think the Hampton Inn has free shuttle service to/from airport and to/from DMU... free breakfast as well... but last year's thread has a wealth of information, especially for interview stuffs...

Are the bulk of interviews sent out in the first batch? Or all there still lots to come? I didn't get one last week, so I'm curious.

For those of you who have already made your interview appointment:

When you log back on to the portal, can you change your date to another open slot? Just wondering if changes were possible after confirming a date.

Thanks!

No, it says you have to call/email the admissions office to reschedule

I'm interviewing on the 13'th as well. From looking at last year's thread I went with the Renaissance Savery Hotel. Mention DMU for a discount.

Free shuttle and pickup to and from DMU. 😉

Lets get some stats up in here for those with invites

3.5 cGPA, 3.94 sGPA, 24 MCAT (waiting on retake score)

Question about D.O. letter of recommendation, did any of you suggest what the doctor put in the letter. I have done all my letters as confidential so I don't know what they say, but I'm sure they are good. Did any of you ask if your letters addressed their suggested topics or just submit what was given to you?

This was taken directly from DMU's website:

"One letter that details your exposure to medicine. This must come from a physician (D.O. or M.D.). The letter needs to describe your exposure to patients and your ability to perform in a medical setting. It can reflect shadowing, volunteer, or work experience."

Hope this helps... good luck!

First interview!!!!
