Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, did you switch to the 23rd using the online scheduling system or by calling the Admissions Office?

I think you have to call to switch. Anna is ridiculously nice tho, told me the dates available and made the switch in a minute.

Did you switch recently? If so, do you remember any of the other dates available? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks for your input! 🙂

Last week I believe and she just gave me the September dates which I'd have to think are full now. Best thing to do if you want to move up is just call intermittently (aka not everyday 😉) and try and catch an open date. It sounds like new II's have been for November so slots are filling up fast.

And happy to help, couldn't be more excited for the 23rd!

completed since August the 7th. Haven't heard anything 🙁

sorry for being late, but good luck to y'all interviewing this month!!!👍

I'm so sad I just got put on hold today 🙁 I completed my supplemental on 8/8, but I wasn't complete until 8/21 because of my rec letters.

Hey it's not a rejection! Did you find out through email? I was complete around the same time as you.

Interview day complete! Awesome day, awesome school. I really enjoyed myself and the interview was very laid back. A good conversation.....no hard questions or tricky questions. It was nice.

Its all good hold on to hope!! I am on the hold list as well.....I am retaking the MCAT in January but at this point I'm feeling like I will miss out on this cycle and will have to reapply next year...My MCAT score is the only reason I didnt get an II right away 🙁

How were you notified of your hold status?

I received an email of the notification that I was on hold status, I think that is how they send out all the notifications of either ii, rejection, or hold status.

sGPA 3.63 cGPA 3.63 Have over 12000 patient contact hours and DO shadowing along with great LOR's and EC's. MCAT was extremely low 22 so I signed up to take it again in January. Looking back I was not prepared at all for the MCAT. I called and asked if the reason why I am on hold is because of my MCAT and they said yes.....

Dang your experience and gpa are good! Did they give a response as to why you were on hold when you called?did they specifically say that your MCAT was the reason?

For all those who found out they were on hold, did you call in or receive an e-mail. If you called in, how long should I probably wait to call? I know they say give them up to 60 days, but is that how long everyone else has been waiting?

Sorry I didn't see the last sentence of your post. Dang that sucks considering that your only weakness was the MCAT. I'm in a similar situation I have a 24 with a 3.8 and tons of medical experience but I am still worried :/

I received an email approximatley 10 days after submission so I would wait until you receive an email. They will send an email that will advise you whether you are invited to interview, rejected, or placed on hold for further consideration later in the cycle

Well your closer than I am lol they told me to get my MCAT to atleast a 25 to be competitive. I have been on a strict MCAT study prep and will continue it until January and I expect to get in the 30's already got my practice test up there. Before I took MCAT my highest practice test was 24. I started studying again when I got my results and I've already improved my practice scores considerably so by January I should be golden

That's awesome progress! Are you enrolled in a class? Or studying on your own

Does anyone know if a hold status for an interview is really a "death sentence"? Does anyone on the hold list actually interview later in the cycle? I'm not giving up hope but I'm trying to be realistic about the situation.

I'm studying on my own, I'm using MCAT Kracker's books I have Bio, Chem, Physics, and Organic books. They seem pretty good. My buddy used them and just got his MCAT score back last week and got a 30. I'm also finishing organic chem right now and biochem in the winter. I spent most of my first MCAT study time on organic since I hadnt had that class yet and it hurt me on physical science section

They said we'd get an email with our acceptance, wait list or reject decision within 3 weeks. Some students said they were notified within a week, some two.....so it depends on when the committee meets after your interview day.

I'd say really don't stress AT ALL about this day. The interview was totally a conversation...know what you feel about OMM, what made you interested in DO and if you have experience with OMM. Those were my questions.
Be able to explain any discrepancies in your app....they asked about my W's semester.

I interviewed today as well definitely agree with everything said here. Also anyone who looked at last years like me where many people complained about the plastic surgeon who drilled them I had him today and he was actually a riot. So no need to worry just know why you want to be there.

Hey everyone,
I haven't been on SDN since school first started but I just wanted to introduce myself and hopefully (with time willing) make myself a resource for you guys. My participation has been somewhat limited, especially since we just finished with our first wave of tests today. I am a first year student here at DMU. Let me start off by saying that it was nice to see and meet some of you guys here on interview day. I know how nervous I initially was when I was interviewing, particularly because DMU was my first interview, but I wanted to sort of shed light on how the typical interview day is planned for those of you will be joining us in the months to come

The staff here does a great job of making sure that everyone is relaxed so that they can feel comfortable during their interview, hence why the interview is in the afternoon . The morning is spent getting to know your fellow interviewees. The beginning of the day begins with everyone sitting at a round table, introducing themselves and getting to know one another. Dr. Mueller, who is an absolute stud 😀, will be there to talk to you about DMU. You then have a brief meeting discussing the various electives that are offered and then a presentation on financial aid. As the day progresses, you will be taken to the different facilities, including the main classrooms, the surgical skills lab, the OMM lab, and simulation lab. Then you have lunch with some of the current first year students, and then after that, you have interviews.

While you are waiting for your interview in the afternoon, you will have time to talk with some of the student ambassadors. We will be there sitting with you as you wait for your interview. This is a very good opportunity for you to bounce questions off of us about anything and everything about this school (what we like, what we dislike, what were some reservations that we had about coming here, what made us decide on DMU, etc. etc.). During my interview, I felt that the students I spoke with were brutally honest, and I feel our class will be the same. This will hopefully help you make the most informed decision regarding where you will attend medical school, whether it be here at DMU or elsewhere.

I think that you guys will see the community atmosphere that is fostered here at DMU. Yes, the classes are tough and the information is abundant, but, everyone here makes a concerted effort to work as a team. Anytime someone has a study guide, they share it with the class on facebook. The second years do the same. The first week that we were here in Des Moines, they took us out on a pub run prior to the start of school. They also run exam review sessions prior to every test and even set up a dropbox account with helpful study guides that they had gathered from the previous year. The camaraderie really helps everyone de-stress and get through this process together, which is something you don't see at each and every school, and this is why I wanted to point that out.

Lastly, regarding the interview, do not be nervous because they are SUPER laid back. No ethical questions. If you have a second year student there, s/he is usually the one that is facilitating most of the interview. The faculty and staff genuinely want to get to know who YOU are as a person as opposed to knit picking your stats/MCAT, which I think takes a lot of the stress out of the equation. So, with that being said, I hope that you guys have fun and enjoy your experience and make the most of the day. I signed up to sit with the group interviewing on Thursday, September 19 and Friday October 18th! Feel free to message me on here and I will do my best to respond. See yal soon! 😀

I should also mention, since this was asked earlier, the turn around time for finding out about your interview is 2-3 weeks, usually 2 with those who interview earlier in Oct-November. Also, being placed on hold or being waitlisted is certainly not a "death list". Several of my classmates received interviews after being placed on hold for OVER 60 DAYS, and many others were accepted in May/June after being placed on the waitlist. So, remain optimistic!

Was that name made in preparation for this winter? It'll be a great change from the hellish heat of late. To all interviewees and applicants, heed ih8's words. It could scarcely be said better. And now back to speaking like a normal person, I go...err Yoda.

Yeah, I agree. This school is really special and I enjoyed the whole day from morning till the end of the interview, which is at the end of the day(good vs. bad??) The bells and whistles the school has are really nice and am really looking forward to hearing if I got in. For future interviews, know you application inside out. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much they knew about me, and I think it showed the demeanor of the school as a whole. Good luck all!!

Now the wait begins...

Glad to hear the interviews went well!

Is anyone able to tell me when we choose our core rotation site? I don't recall seeing that in all of my thread perusing. Thanks!

We have our first meeting with our coordinator during the fall of our second year and most of it gets set by the spring of our second year.

So how reasonable is it to get your rotation sites nearish to des moines? Id prefer to buy a house rather than rent, but dont wanna get stuck being 5 hours away during 3rd year.

This may be either blatantly obvious or beyond your knowledge, but I'd have to think if someone wanted to do their rotations in Ohio they'd have no problem with most wanting to stay in Iowa? Thank you for your help!

We were told that all the sites are chosen by a lottery....approximately 70% of the class gets Iowa and of that 70%, 50% get Des Moines.....
We were also told that 95% end up with their 1st or 2nd choice.

Very cool thanks for the info 🙂

I don't know if I can wait two- three weeks for a decision. I'm not sure about how my interview went either. It's honestly a blur to me right now

I know! I keep checking my e-mail hoping for the acceptance.

They must have forgotten about me. Completed since August 7th. Well, I guess I have two more weeks until it reaches 60 days...

you still have three more days to go. By the way, does it mean that you are more likely to have an ii if you hear back from them sooner?

I don't think the admission committee meets until Monday to make their decisions....at least that's what I was told.

I don't want to wait either!
I got an email from them but it was just a post interview survey....I was excited for 30 seconds. Lol.
